  1. Whether it was corrupted to get where it is today or not, I still think the dictionary definition that I referenced above is the generally held definition of what a cover is today, in 2007, for most people who are of my generation (I'm 42) and younger. Is Coltrane's version a cover or just another rendition of the tune? It's significantly different from the pop/Broadway versions of this song, but it's still a cover. I don't see why it's that big a deal though. If you don't want to call that a cover, that's fine with me too.
  2. Well, the reason I have a problem with it is because it leaves a meaning without a word to express it. When I want to describe the operation of recording a new song, of obvious hit potential, by a different artist, specifically in order to steal sales from the original recording, I no longer have a word that means precisely that. Because the word that DID mean precisely that has been used for something related but so common and innocuous that it lacks impact in relation to the specific meaning, which is truly worthy of being singled out as a practice that should be greatly deprecated. MG Whatever practice you're describing...I don't think really happens in this day and age anymore. Maybe it happened 50 years ago.
  3. If you're asking me, I'd say yes, he's covering the song she sang. Took it as a starting point for improvisation, and definitely made it his own (and much better obviously), but it's a cover none the less.
  4. From that list, I'd go for Burton/Ozone, and Danilo Perez. edit - if i lived in that town!
  5. I still think the versions that come after are covers, whether they become "definitive" or not. And whether they try to make a recording that follow the original closely, or dramatically re-interprets it.
  6. From dictionary.com: cover version – (noun) a recording of a song by a singer, instrumentalist, or group other than the original performer or composer. Also called cover. Maybe things are more vague in jazz than in other musical realms, I don't know.
  7. Good time to buy stuff from yourmusic: 20% off code - YMSALE I don't know how long this code will last though, so if you want something, jump on it. This appears to work on the single discs, not doubles or boxes, though.
  8. My guess is CDs, since he was offering the same set in a previous thread...
  9. One of my best friends used to tell me the best $300 he ever spent was either his vasectomy or his garage door opener, he never could decide.
  10. John Coltrane - My Favorite Things: At Newport Macy Gray - Big Mary Schneider - Yodelling the Classics (and it's a 2 disc set, no less!)
  11. From musictap: Verve Records will unleash Coltrane originals, restored and remastered and in digipak packaging to best replicate the original look and feel of the albums. Albums include The Complete Africa/Brass Sessions, Live at the Village Vanguard, Coltrane, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, Ballads, and a Limited Edition slip-cased Box set that houses all of these 5 Impulse reissues. This first salvo will be joined by future reissues of Coltrane classics in a collector’s setting. These individually available and Boxed set will be released on October 30.
  12. I noted that earlier Mike - but either way, they're no longer available.
  13. I'm not sure about which conference is the strongest overall. I do think Oklahoma is still the best team in the Big 12. In the Big 12 South, Texas some big flaws, and Texas Tech is a one dimensional (but effective) passing team. Okla State, Texas A&M, and Baylor are all behind. In the Big 12 North, I'm not sure who the best team is. Nebraska? Colorado? K State? Missouri? There's alot more parity in the Big 12 now between the north & south, but Oklahoma is still far ahead of the rest of the teams, even with Colorado's upset of them.
  14. Crazy day/wknd of college football: #3 Oklahoma lost #4 Florida lost #5 West Virginia lost #7 Texas lost #10 Rutgers lost #11 Oregon lost (to #6 Cal though) #13 Clemson lost #21 Penn State lost #22 Alabama lost That's alot of Top 25 teams there. 5 of the Top 10 teams!
  15. Why was Solo benched for an inferior Scurry in the first place? Scurry's a big name, but clearly not the player Solo is at this point. The coach's questionable decision is what caused this mess, it appears to me.
  16. New video for "Way Out of Here" here.
  17. Maybe you got their only copy, LOL.
  18. Stunning upset of #3 Oklahoma today by Colorado, on a game ending field goal!
  19. Good interview with Steven Wilson on the Goldmine website. I think this is an apt description of PT today: "an original, ear-catching milieu that resides at the intersection of progressive, metal and ambient music."
  20. That and "Plugged Nickel". Right, Conn?

  22. I just got an "out of stock" email as well. I doubt they'll get more.
  23. Thanks for the heads-up, Bob! edit - these are promos or something (black marker over bar code) but I can live with that for this price!
  24. <rant> Ok, I haven't liked Dennis Franchione for a long time now. I didn't like how he came to A&M, which was underhanded (the school is equally at fault there). I didn't like how he handled the actual departure from Alabama, how he didn't tell his players he was going, and so forth. I didn't like that his first action as A&M coach was to immediately change our well known 3-4 Wrecking Crew defense into a 4-3 defense. That crippled the defense, and (I think) robbed the program of it's identity. The defense hasn't recovered yet, and now is playing this silly 4-2-5 nickel defense as their base defense. The way we're playing it doesn't scare anybody, and all of our opponents have scored easily against us for the most part. I haven't liked Franchione's game day coaching. He doesn't seem to know how to game plan for specific opponents. He took perhaps the best quarterback to ever come through A&M, Reggie McNeal, and tried to turn him into an option quarterback for his senior year. That ruined his game, and his stock took a huge tumble in the NFL. I truly think he was a more naturally gifted quarterback than Vince Young, who he was friend and competitor with. He got picked up by the Bengals as an experimental WR, but it didn't work out, and now he's out of the NFL. The same thing is happening to our current QB, Stephen McGee. The guy is tough as nails, and supposedly has a great arm, and yet Franchione is turning him into an option quarterback just like McNeal. Bye bye to your future NFL career, McGee. Now, the topper. Today the San Antonio Express News found out that Franchione sells a secret newsletter to high paying boosters. This newsletter contains information on players who are injured (which Franchione doesn't provide to the media or the general public), and also some of his frank comments about players (this receiver is slow, that one can't catch very well). There's a huge uproar among A&M fans, who are fed up with Franchione and want him gone. This newsletter thing is going to cripple recruiting for the football program ("Hey kid come to Texas Tech - we won't talk bad about you to school boosters like A&M does"). Franchione has his players and his system in place, and still can't win big games. He is a terrible coach. A&M needs to fire him, and fire him NOW! A&M still has R.C. Slocum (the last coach) on payroll. Let him coach the rest of the season, then address the position afterwards. </rant>
  25. This one makes me laugh every time.
