Picked up the recent "Radiation" EP from UKZ, which is the band comprised of Eddie Jobson, Trey Gunn (ex King Crimson), Aaron Lippert (Expanding Man), Alex Machacek (Out Trio, with Terry Bozzio and Patrick O'Hearn), and Marco Minnemann. Pretty cool disc, heavy with some PT-ish and KC-ish sounds in spots, and mellower in others. I like Trey Gunn in general, so I hope this project results in some further recordings. Jobson already had a spinoff from THIS group, called U-Z. That one appears to include (or at least guests) John Wetton (!), Tony Levin, Greg Howe, and Minneman. www.ukzband.com

Sports: 2009/10 NBA & NCAA Basketball Season

I think there's probably a more appropriate thread than this one (isn't there one about jazzy styled images in non-jazz places or something like that?), but I don't know where to find it, so it's here. Some very cool images in the new Miami Heat intro videos, where each player gets a BN-style album cover: I'd paste them all, but they're in some funky format, had to transfer those two to imageshack first. -
Coming from you, that means alot.

Seconded, and thanks vajerzy! -
I will also donate shortly again. I like the live chat when we do get together, but it isn't as frequent as it used to be, that's for sure. I think everyone's just busier or got other things going on. Dunno if it's worth keeping for the few times we use it...

I went in this morning to make my picks for today's 3 games, but the board won't let me! When was the cutoff to make picks? I thought you could make them up until kickoff? For the record I'm taking Green Bay, Dallas, and NYG. -
Got an email that there's a 15% off sale on all boxsets at the moment. Sale is good though Nov 26th, for anyone interested. Also as Joe Bip mentioned, the Buy 2 Get 1 Free is going on through the end of the month. Gotta buy the 2 before Nov 30th, and you get the free one in January. Weird.

Ours closed about a year ago for the same reason - new mall ownership jacked the rent up, and FYE said no thanks. Our mall has no music or book stores anymore, which always seemed like mall staples to me. Our FYE didn't particularly have a great inventory, but they did buy used items and there was no haggling or subjectivity on the buyer's part as they had some database that told them what things were valued at and what price was to be offered, which I liked.

The only reason I can see for having a landline anymore might be for a home security system to be able to dial out in the event of an emergency. I don't see a need for one otherwise, at least in my case. -
Happy Birthday!

Don't agree with that. Beyond the Wall isn't bad, but I'd take Songbook, Pursuance, Triology, Stars & Stripes Live, Black Hope, or African Exchange Student over it.

Any rock recommendation? Preferably w/ good drummer?

Welcome to Austin, I think you'll like the city! Waterloo has ALOT more jazz than what you noted, it's just that they don't categorize their music - it's all lumped together with rock, R&B, rap, etc, alphabetically. -
Happy Birthday!!

Well, 2 1/2 years later I'm listening to Secret Chiefs "Book M" release, from 2001. Good stuff - got alot of Indian and Middle-Eastern sounds, mixed with some techno-ish rock. SC3 also have a release in the Zorn/Masada Book of Angels series, "Xaphan". Gonna have to check that one out as well.

And in Raiders news, former #1 overall draft pick Jamarcus Russell has been benched for the rest of the season, in favor of journeyman Bruce "Who?" Gradkowski.

I'd go see him as well, but it sure seems like he's got about 25 different live albums out there - which all seem to contain half Beatles, half solo stuff.

Got any Wham or Paul McCartney?

As a general rule, I have it on good authority that ECM likes the sound of its masterings, and that it does NOT do remastering. That's what I thought. IIRC they did remaster those "Rarum" compilations from a few years ago. Might be a way for David to sample an artist's ECM tracks in remastered form.

The axe fell for Dick Jauron today after leading the Bills to a 3-6 record. I guess T.O.'s popcorn wasn't enough for the Bills.
