50 years....... Seriously, I think it is the natural progression of things. It took about that long before Miles declared "Jazz is dead". Any art form suffers the same fate. As good as it is, it can only be extended, twisted, turned, minimalized, colored, distorted, repeated etc. etc. before it all becomes a little tiring. Pop music is ready for a paradignm shift IMHO. It will happen. Someone(s) will come along with something totally new to the masses. That is not to say it will necessarily be free from all musical roots, but it will be new and unique with a completely new sound and culture and it will capture the imagination us all...that is art. I think people are ready to embrace the "new thing" but don't know what it is yet. When it happens, the music industry will not have to worry so much about illegal downloads. my 2 cents

Sam is what, 85 now? I just hope I can construct a cogent sentence at that age, much less a live performance. Realistic expectations in order here. What a fabulous opportunity to see one of the greats.

I believe Saluga was also a member of the popular comedy troupe "Ace Trucking Company". And Bob Dylan immortalized it in his song "Gotta Serve Somebody": "You can call me Zimmy You can call me RJ You can call me Ray You can call me anythin' No matter what you say You gonna have to serve somebody..." That's the one! I knew there would be folks around here that remembered.... Thanks Lonson........or you can call me jazzbo!

Or so you'd think... How about my personal fave - Art Blakely? It's all just sloppy. In the words of Willy Loman "Attention must be paid!" (in 'Death Of A Salesman', by Tennesse Williams). I know there are bad spellers, and maybe good spelling is just a knack, but I believe you should pay special attention to names. Back when I did general reporting I had an editor who drummed it into me "Get the name right!!!". I felt foolish one time asking John Smith to spell his name for me, but he said, "Thank you for asking, no one ever does. It's J-O-N S-M-Y-T-H." Or, maybe it's because of the dozens of misspellings of my own name I've had to endure... All of this talk reminds me of a comedian when I was a kid in the mid 60's that made a whole routine out of being called the wrong name...... He would start..Well you can call me Bill ...or you can call me Gill....or etc. etc. etc........BUT PLEASE don't call me Johnson(I think) The funny thing is I can't remember his name.....someone here will remember him though. He made a pretty good living out of that line for a while... and of course, You can call me Bill....or you can call me William.......just don't call me late for dinner! I suspect some of the musicians adhered to this philosophy...just so long as they could cash the checks.

Shelly Manne "West Coast Sound" - others like this??
Morganized replied to tonyvose's topic in Recommendations
Hello tonyvose,, Welcome to the Board! Glad to have you aboard. Sounds like to me you have stumbled onto the West Coast sound. There are so many players and sessions that share many similarities to the one you cited. The Shorty Rogers small group stuff is really good. Try some of the early Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Bob Cooper, Bob Gordon, Bill Holman sessions. Also the Jack Montrose sessions might be to your liking. Early Gerry Mulligan (California Concerts) Also check out the Howard Rumsey Lighthouse All Stars. If you would like to sample some of this try the Night Light sessions archive. Many of the players are featured here: Night Lights Specifically: Lighthouse All Stars Nocturne Story Hope this helps. It may be the beginning of a long, long, ride! Enjoy -

That's a good deal! About $9.50 per disc. From purely an investment standpoint, the buyer did well, me thinks. The winner of that auction was green_380 who claims he is liquidating his jazz collection on ebay in order to move to Italy I think. He has been selling for about one year or so.Maybe longer. I wonder if he plans to sell these to his loyal customers? Appears that he may have found a new line of work! If green_380 resides in these parts no offense intended. I did have to chuckle though. He has sold quite a collection on ebay as many of you probably know. Guess he just can't leave it all behind.

Ah, here we have the crux of the matter! I understand how the earliest days of the Coltrane influence messed w/Pepper, but - eventually he integrated it. Chuck says he "lost much of" it, which may or may not be another way of saying the same thing, but I don't think that Pepper of the mid-70s and beyond (which includes the Vanguard material) was what it was if he hadn't gone through Trane the way he did. In other words, if Pepper had never heard Trane, I don't think that he would have evolved to the point to where he played like he did by the time of those recordings. No matter, count me as part of the minority (here, anyway) which prefers later Pepper. Similarly, I prefer later Mobley. In both cases, the later work ain't as "pretty" as the earlier, but there's an...immediacy, a feeling that there's no longer a layer of "music" between the music and the emotion, if that makes any sense. Which is not to say that that earlier layer was superfluous, or shallow, or anything like that. Far from it. Just that it seems like in the later work, it was no longer needed, that both players might have felt put upon, perhaps even belabored, to go back and play with that vibe again. As always, mileages can and will vary. as usual, you said it better than I could......... Me too. I think Pepper is pretty great all the way through but I prefer his later stuff for all the reasons cited above.

Does anyone here have advice on a commercially available registry cleaner for a Dell laptop? Is this something that should be done by a pro? I would consider myself about average or slightly less than average in technical knowledge. Any recommendations?

Check out this 14 year old female alto player with Phil Woods. He seems to approve.

Great supporting cast..I wonder what the sound is like? I would be interested to learn about this one as well. -
I have been enjoying a session he did with Clark Terry, Don Friedman, Victor Gaskin titled Portraits....on Chesky.

You better keep that email, in case you ever want to re-sell that disc to anyone else - as proof that it's a legitimate copy. You are right. Doesn't this open up a problem of proof if the copyright holder wants to enforce its rights? If the trend continues you can envision a world where a buyer could not possibly know whether the copy is a " legitimate" copy or an "illegitimate" copy. Especially if bad guys are selling reproduceable art work etc.etc. ...... I guess the next step for the RIAA is to require all buyers to contact the company to see if the copy you wish to purchase is "legitimate" or not. Whew! brave new world.

do guys know about EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES?
Morganized replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Audio Talk
I purchased the 120GB Maxtor unit a while back. I had some difficulty getting it installled properly...spent a long time on the phone with several different tech support people but finally got it working right. Maxtor is owned/affiliated with Seagate. It has automatic back up software that is nice. Automatically backs up at the same time every day. I guess they all have this feature now? It was less than $100 on special at Fry's. -
Kevin and Chuck, From the sounds of it a MAJOR reorganization is in store. Please keep us informed! Prayers for all who are impacted.

I agree that semantics becomes a little bit of a problem here. I don't know that I would include Moncur either in that category but all of the above mentioned titles are excellent. Some a little more outside than others however. My choice... Herbie Hancock's "Speak Like A Child"

What did you listen to most in 2007?
