  1. Get The Fantastic Frank Strozier, with Booker, Wynton K, Paul Chambers & Jimmy Cobb.
  2. could be wonderful, could be a trainwreck...
  3. Just wondering, whether the Rhino set incorporates all tracks from subject lovely ACE compilation released in 1992...... No. a pity, as me believe this being a must have for any dedicated otis follower....... I agree, up to a point - the best on it, say "Cupid", is marvelous, but some of it really is bottom of the barrell (but what a deep barrell it was)

  5. recorded then (just before Alligator Boogaloo) but didn't get released til much later (198?). Which reminds me of one thing I really like about Lou, although not a jazz thing particularly, he seems to really dig tunes as tunes, not just as jamming vehicles. Along with his insistance that blues is central to jazz, he's also on record as not particularly digging 'modes' and modes based jazz ed. Not gospel in either case, but a good indication of where he's coming from. And there's still unissued stuff from the BN years! I'm good with Lou thru the Egregious Muhammad years, not so much after that.
  6. Not bad, not bad at all, of the three Yardbirds covers on that box it's the only one that goes beyond more or less straight cover to extend the idea for a couple extra minutes worth.
  7. I think states should let people put whatever stupidity they wish on their plates, except those that an imply a false official status, I'd rather know what idiots I'm dealing with.
  8. Hope you love it, most of what immediately struck me as 'missing' were covers, which I love to hear Otis and the MGs do but I realize that's not to everyone's taste...
  9. Hey TTK, you heard the version of "Lost Woman" on the Duane Allman Skydog box?
  10. If I was boiling it down to 4 CDs, I'd have made a few different choices, but it's probably 90% right....but not perfect.
  11. I think the ultimate version would include at least some mono and stereo since three songs from two singles (Respect. Old Man Trouble, and I've Been Loving you too Long) had to be recut for stereo and therefore are distinctly different takes done some time apart (the fourth side didn't make the album and therefore only exists in mon - I'm Depending On You, I think?). But you could get all the relevant mono and stereo on one CD, but I don't know if anyone has done that... My understanding is that the whole album, ie the new material and the three remakes, was done in a day - 30 some hours that Otis was in town between gigs during which some of the studio guys had a club gig of their own. Kinda makes you wonder why anyone spends much longer making much lesser music.
  12. Not sure if I can afford this, but that would be the only reason for me to not buy it. Certainly of far greater interest to me than Little Feats and I like them OK.
  13. Willie, Earl Scruggs, Johnny Gimble, Buddy Emmons, Danny Gatton, the MGs, Jeff Beck, VU (sometimes), the Band, the Cheiftains, Ivo Popposov & his Bulgarian Wedding Band, all in different ways.
  14. I was v. happy to see her medal (when did this become a verb?), it was old school figure skating - v. graceful.
  15. Bill F 7-8 times, Sonny R maybe 6 times, lots of locals 20+
  16. I've been thinking about going to see this Bobby Watson/Victor Lewis band since I saw them twice back in the day and liked 'em v. much. So, my Q is this - does it 'feel so good' or not?
  17. Lucille!!!!!!!!
  18. The Russian lady who won certainly skated well and deserved to be in the medals, but beyond that I'd have to see all the judges scorecards and understand the scoring better to know if anything was amiss - isn't this why they drop the high and low scores to get to the final results? The figure skating scores certainly seemed no more subjective than the various extreme skiing and snow boarding events.
  19. He did indeed, the Yardbirds Golden Eggs (I & II) come to mind, as well as a couple os Rolling Stones Titles - Bright Lights, Big City and a '72 tour album whose name is escaping me at the moment. I also really liked this one: Yeah, that's one of the Stones ones I was thinking of - pretty decent performance too.
  20. Waymon Reed had an interesting career, for a musician few people have heard of. Worked with Ira Sullivan, James Brown, Count Basie, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, All Star Trumpet Spectacular and Sarah Vaughan (to whom he was married), before dying of cancer. Nice leader date on Artists House, IIRC

  22. Does someone have a list of which Ferraris (no Maseratis or Lamborginis?) Miles owned? Inquiring minds want to know if they somehow equate with what he was playing at the time...
  23. I had a caller here at the library who asked "Was Shirley temple really a big star/famous?" And no, she wasn't too too young to know, she'd just somehow missed the biggest box office star of her time...
  24. Is Pink Elephant Music all alcohol related?
