Frank Zappa - The Hot Rats Sessions
Ken Dryden replied to RogerF's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
George Duke told me that the Roxy album was one of his favorites during his time with Zappa. I’ve enjoyed all of the post-1993 releases but Hot Rats is the best of the box sets. -
Frank Zappa - The Hot Rats Sessions

The trust always seems to add extras in order to boost the price. But this was by far the most compelling Zappa box released since his death in 1993. -
Tom, enjoy you well-deserved retirement. I doubt that you will have time to get bored. Tom, enjoy you well-deserved retirement. I doubt that you will have time to get bored. Tom, enjoy you well-deserved retirement. I doubt that you will have time to get bored.

Joe Pass' virtuosity on guitar and voluminous solo and small group recordings for Pablo between 1972 and 1992 have long made him one of my favorites. Born January 13, 1929, he died at the age of 65 in May 1994, less than six months after I conducted a phone interview with him on November 30, 1993. Timeless Jazz will celebrate his legacy with a number of his recordings plus a few excerpts from the thirty minute interview. Streaming on wutc.org from 3 to 5 pm ET on Sunday, January 12, repeat streaming on WUTC's HD 2 station on Wednesday, January 15, from 10 am to 12 noon ET. Still no podcasts, but the station is working on it. I can probably send two zip files to anyone interested.

My copy finally arrived at 6:37 after an all day wait.

There may not be any. All of the players from the 1954 team that were 25 or younger are deceased, including Bob Turley, Ryne Duren and Billy O’Dell, along with one other pitcher.

Nelson Riddle & Les Baxter 101 Strings Albums
Ken Dryden replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Artists
I forget which bio it was, possibly Peter Levenson’s bio of Nelson Riddle, but Les Baxter was known for taking arranging jobs, sub-contracting the work, but taking credit for it. The saying went, “The Les Baxter, the better...” -
It is frustrating that I ordered both sets immediately when they were announced yet others have received copies before mine were even shipped. There must be a randomness to filling the orders.

I haven’t had much luck finding CDs at Wax ‘n Facts in recent years, but always find some LPs that haven’t been reissued on CDs.

Odd Things Found In A CD Or LP Purchase
Ken Dryden replied to Ken Dryden's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I thought it would be the Michael Bolton and Kenny G CDs... It was a Smithsonian release, supposedly Armstrong's last live recording in early 1971. -
Today I was about to play a Decluttr CD purchase and discovered the wrong CD in the jewel box. But the prize winner for the wrong discs comes from a local used music & bookstore. I found a copy of the Louis Armstrong At the National Press Club in a digipak and didn't bother to look at the disc. When I got ready to play it at home, I discovered an S & M DVD and a Better Sex instructional DVD. I guess the previous owner kept his porn stashed and either died or entered assisted living and no one bothered to check the disc carefully when it was traded in at the store...

Unavailability of hard copy CD product !!!
Ken Dryden replied to bigbandrecord's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I have a CD of Ralph Peterson's Gen-Next Big Band - Listen Up! and it is available on CD Baby, plus the other usual websites, I'm sure. -
Monk Debunked
Ken Dryden replied to Dave James's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
That book has been available for some time... -
There are some ECM titles, jazz imports, DVDs that were of interest to me. If you want some laughs, pick up the 1997 Jazz Awards concert. I was talking to Marian McPartland about it prior to it taking place and she said, "When I learned that Michael Bolton was on the bill I though about not ----ing going..." The editing of the Basie tribute medley was an absolute mess.

Here is the link to the 1967 Monterey Jazz Festival NET television broadcast that I discussed earlier: https://archive.org For some reason, my computer is not copying the complete link to the exact page, so search for: Monterey Jazz Festival 1967 - N.E.T. Festival

I've shopped Berkshire Music Outlet sporadically over the years, because their website was a pain to search. They have reformatted it and it's better. There are quite a few interesting titles available in jazz and classical, most of them bargains. https://www.broinc.com

I have both LPs, the latter, of course, is two LPs. I also have a recording somewhere in my digital files of Svend Asmussen, Jean-Luc Ponty and Ray Nance playing together, it may have come from an archive.com video at Monterey.

I finally pulled the trigger and shelled out a hefty amount for this long out of print 10 CD set.

Controversial Food Opinions
Ken Dryden replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Tofu, alcohol free beer and white chocolate are all insults to the dinner table... -
It's funny that I didn't click on your link. I've long been aware of this clip and it's on a Keith Emerson disc. Of course, Oscar Peterson enjoyed playing boogie woogie as a young man.

I guess some of you may have seen the video with Keith Emerson, a bespectacled Carl Palmer and an unknown bassist playing a duet of "Honky Tonk Train Blues" on a CBC television broadcast. I always enjoyed Oscar Peterson, he was a delightful improviser and a gifted composer. He was also a lot of fun in an interview, I lost track of how many times I broke up laughing and he got a kick out of my sharing Niels Pedersen's response to my question about how he discovered a vocalist who appeared on this then-new CD. Ask me about Keith Jarrett and I would answer a bit differently.

I will be belatedly celebrating Clark Terry's 99th birthday with the December 15th edition of Timeless Jazz. The program includes several phone interview excerpts from a chat I did with him for Hot House back in November 2007. One topic should be of interest to Terry fans, as I don't think that I've seen it discussed elsewhere or even mentioned in the biography that his wife wrote. Hour 1: Clark Terry: Clark Terry Chuckles Clark Terry: Live at the Village Gate Top & Bottom Interview excerpt 1 - developing a person sound and circular breathing Clark Terry & Kenny Barron: One On One The Intimacy of the Blues Clark Terry: What a Wonderful World - For Louis & Duke Duke's Place (C Jam Blues) Clark Terry: Color Changes Flutin' & Fluglin' Inteview Excerpt 2: Adding flugelhorn and alternating between it and trumpet in a song Clark Terry: The Hymn On the Trail Clark Terry: Having Fun Mumbles Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer: The Power of Positive Swinging Simple Waltz Hour 2: Clark Terry & The Big B-A-D Band: Live at the Wichita Jazz Festival 1974 Sheba Interview Excerpt #3: Duo Sessions Clark Terry & Red Mitchell: To Duke & Basie It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing Clark Terry & Red Mitchell: Jive at Five Cottontail (take 1) Clark Terry: Serenade to a Bus Seat (Keepnews Collection) Serenade to a Bus Seat Interview Excerpt #4: Composing Clark Terry & Jon Faddis: Take Double Climbing Old Fuji Clark Terry & Hia Orchestra: Featuring Paul Gonsalves Clark Bars Clark Terry & Bob Brookmeyer: The Complete Live Recordings 1962-1965 Stolen Moments Clark Terry: The Happy Horns of Clark Terry In a Mist Clark Terry: Clark Terry Spacemen Spacemen
