  1. Vinyl is actually pretty strong by comparison...barring any enviromnetal or structural dammage, that is. Shellac, though, is the ultimate workhorse, in terms of stability. One of the worst media is actually DAT. The shelf-life on those can sometimes be little more than a decade. I find that, despite much of our collection being 1/4" open reel tape, the DATs are in at least as much danger, as far as degradation is concerned. ← Is shellac less prone to warp-age? Is that why it noses out vinyl?
  2. My primary set-up: Sennheiser HD-202 cans: Sony D-NF610 CD player: I would guess that 80% of my listening happens on this. Certainly nothing to write home about. I needed a pair of cans that were closed ear, relatively indestructible, and priced at a level that won't kill me when they need replacing. And they will need replacing, as they get abused. I wear this setup while commuting on the bus [30-50 mins each way] while at the gym [again 30-50 mins] and as I go for a walk each day over the lunch hour [30-45 mins]. They feel great, are relatively sweat-proof, and look only mildly ridiculous. The home setup gets listened to while cooking and dining, and more often on the weekends: Marantz receiver & CD player, ProJect 1.2 turntable with stock everything, and Paradigm Atom speakers and powered sub. The receiver has Dolby Pro-Logic, but I have no surround speakers hooked up. I watch more movies with it than listening to music, but the stereo suits me fine. It sounds pretty good. At one point I was going to go in on the B&W 603 M3s, but realized taht the $ would be better spent elsewhere right now...
  3. If I do know, can I now request some CD-Rs?
  4. Count me in! I have only had the opportunity to hear Far Wes. It seems like it would be a decent seller, with the name recognition and all...
  5. I love the dead, but I am still not a fan of Bob Weir's vocals. I am a huge fan of Jerry's guitar playing. There are no other guitar players around then or now that can keep me interested for 30 minutes on one theme. There is a dynamic and fleet in his playing that I get lost in, especially on those earlier psychedelic flights of 1968-1970.
  6. My father-in-law bought one of these last year, the "C" variant with the big motor. They are coming up in two weeks and it is my duty to pilot this thing from Minneapolis to Duluth. I look forward to giving a full report -- including tales of having to replace those rear tires... mgraham, I have read nothing but good things about the Acura TL. If I recall, it comes as Consumer Reports' most recommended. And it is sharp to boot!
  7. I have consistently seen these pop up at some local stores, at about $13-16 ea. Picked up Moncur's Some Other Stuff this way. I am guessing they were using digital masters on these?
  8. A three day party. Wooo!
  9. I've got that, minus the wagon, of course! Thanks all!
  10. Comfortably Numb is so much better with Roger singing th other parts, rathern than Gilmour doing it all. I always want them to tear into more improv a la 1972.
  11. They could have used a disc larger than 10" to accomodate for the length. There were magnetic tape recorders around at the time, but I don't know if they were in use in the studios.
  12. So the photo is misleading! ← Yeah, all you have left is a quarter when it is all said and done.
  13. I have a 20 GB Neuros HD player. This thing is super versatile. I got this one for its recording capabilities, but it turns out that I am using the thing more and more as an MP3 player. I can record in 128 and 160k .mp3, full 16 bit .wav, or in .ogg vorbis. I have recorded several LPs for portable listening with it, and I have all of the items downloaded from emusic and iTunes on it. Not to mention all of the Dead downloaded from archive.org. I have a few tracks ripped from CDs, but they are in the minority. I am also able to listen to full-length radio programs on it as well. My commute is about one hour door-to-door, so 59 minutes works just right. I am hoping to get a nice powered stereo mic to resume live and field recording. The internal mic is nice, but only mono. The thing also has AM/FM radio, plus an FM transmitter for use with any radio. All that for about $249!
  14. And how is that different from several other solos on this set? Some good stuff on this one, but it is the most formulaic and least favorite of the Mosaic sets I have...
  15. I bulged a disc rotating the tires on my car. I recommend Pilates. Seems to work for me.
  16. Man, they really hate rock: Hard Rock is dangerous for lungs 09/21/2004 19:27 Listening to Hard Rock or Heavy Metal music may be hazardous to one's health. A team of Belgium scientists from the University of Medicine in Brussels managed to draw such conclusion after extensive research work. According to the results, music compositions of the above-mentioned styles can in fact be dangerous and can cause an incurable damage to lungs. More specifically, it may result in pneumothorax, a condition when lungs lose their ability to collect air and breath. The scientists have observed three cases of this condition in young people who attended rock concerts regularly; they have also examined a man who would constantly listen to Hard Rock music in his car. Medics do not recommend those with lung problems to listen to Hard Rock and attend Rock concerts. Results of the studies can be found in the British Medical Journal. http://english.pravda.ru/science/19/94/377/14281_music.html
  17. I wish they would unleash that set from '74 on its own. They could hype it to the kids and sell a few more, no?
  18. This stuff is the bomb.

    DVD-Audio from LP

Sounds interesting! Welcome to the board. I think you might as easily save some processing time by saving individual tracks, especially since you will be copy & pasting later...
  20. Perhaps that is due to the evil copy-protect on them.
  21. That first Mary Lou Williams title is amazing.
  22. Dj Shadow - Endtroducing [deluxe edition] This is one of my all-time faves, and I am eager to hear the expanded version--however, I don't think any of the bonus stuff is super-hard-to-find.
  23. That depends--if the only ones that can be called "Doubletime" had that awful stripe in the corner like this: Then indeed, it is a short list.
  24. Whew! ← I thought the email slug line was so optimistic: "Your KENNY G featured selection is here!"
  25. Pretty much all of Miles' plugged in material And a second on this one:
