My problem is that I have a rather simple personal life (and barely even keep a calendar for myself -- and that's been the story of my life for decades)... ...but in my 9-5 job, I manage the calendar of the single busiest person in the entire organization I work for, with a calendar that makes me dizzy just looking at it (with 6-10 different appointments every singe day, week in and week out).

Quick, other than the big three (Arnold, Alban, and Anton) -- name your favorite serial composer... Mine? Roger Sessions! His symphonies (especially 6-9), are divine!

So what was the problem with the Selects that made them unprofitable? And at what "per disc" price would they have had to charge for them to be equally profitable to the big boxes? Was it just an economy of scale? - in terms of the amount of cost per release, regardless of whether it was a 3-disc Select, or a 6-disc big-box? I'm sure I knew the answer years ago, but have long since forgotten.

No idea if legit, but both these Horos are pretty fantastic. I have Other Voices, Other Blues on original vinyl, and New Steps came out a couple years ago as a high-quality (probably grey-market?) euro CD complete with original artwork with new liner-notes - a really high-quality release actually. Highly recommended material.

So regarding Mohawks, this "some jazz musicianS (plural) in the 50's" thing -- specifically the plural part -- is a load of crap then. Correct? The Wikipedia article reads that way, but I think I saw a couple other online sources with the same plural reference.

The handwriting on the wall (now, finally) is as clear as day, and it's a shame that people still want to see wiggle room in Cosby's alibi ("yeah, but he never admitted it wasn't consensual"). No shit, Sherlock -- he never did, and that's not likely to ever happen. I wasn't yet (personally) 'completely sure' of the likelyhook of his guilt until this transcript became unsealed -- though as I said before, I do subscribe strongly to the "where there's smoke, there's usually fire" line of thought. But this is nearly the nail in the coffin, as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully some civil cases will further add some clarity, if not for the public, at least for the victims.

Where there's smoke, there's usually fire. And there's been a shit-ton of smoke surrounding Cosby, with close to 30 accusers. I for one am relieved that some real evidence seems to have come to light, one way or the other. The court of public opinion is the least desirable jurisdiction/venue to render judgement, but given the statute of limitations, it may be all that's left - short of what will surely be civil cases. But better the world have a sense of where the wind is blowing on this now, than never.

Random question du jour... Who else besides Sonny Rollins sported a Mohawk hairstyle, either in the 50's (especially), but whenever else as long as we're on the subject. Saw online about American soldiers (paratroopers especially) having Mohawks in WWII, primarily in the military activities in France. But the Wkkipedia entry and other online sources mention jazz musicians (plural) in the 50's, but seemingly Sonny is the only one mentioned by name. Who else? And what approximate years did Sonny (and any others) have Mohawks? I'm not that steeped in Somny Rollins' music or lore, and though I really should know this, it's yet another area of jazz history where I'm pretty thin. And any other jazz-non-standard-hair-styles discussion too, as I suppose this could be the all-purpose thread for this. Thanks!!

I don't think it's the case that many (any?) sets are actually selling below their original list price -- but, rather, that they've lost some of their value as compared with what were previously even higher prices on eBay (meaning higher than today). In most cases, I think almost any Mosaic set will sell for at least $25 per disc (in terms of CD's), or pretty close to that, anyway. The only exceptions might be for something like the Woody Shaw CBS sessions, which is now arguably bested by the more recent box set of that same material (complete will additional material, even). Still, I often see the Woody Shaw sets listed for between $80 and $120 (which is still more than $25 per disc), but what they're actually selling for - I can't really say. EDIT: my comments about prices are based mostly on what I've seen on eBay, and Dusty Groove.

Somebody else can confirm, but I think BN was contractually prohibited from putting McCoy's name on the cover, because of the contracts he had with Inpulse at the time. I sure they would have, but couldn't - or one would sure think.

I've had this disc for years, and really love his first string quartet - as much as the Debussy in fact.

Mode For Joe (BN) and Power To The People (Milestone) are my top 2. Will have to think on the next three.

Barely half-a-dozen that probably qualify as really true "Standards" (alas) -- and yet, I'm having trouble narrowing down a list to just 10 titles. Just skimming his discography (pulling out tunes based on name recognition alone), I'm easily up to over 20 titles that I remember as being really key (at least for me) -- and I know I'd have to go back and actually listen to most of them, to narrow the list. Plus I'm sure there are 2-3 more tunes that aren't the usual, that I can never remember the titles of -- which I always think are way underrated. Not that everything he did/wrote is up there, but there's a lot that is!

I keep reading about the altercation between Max Roach and Ornette in what was it, 1959 -- in various remembrances this week. Roach supposedly punched Ornette in the mouth, on the bandstand. Forgive my ignorance, did they ever reconcile? Ever play together again? Did Roach ever comment about Ornette in the years and decades later? Searches on-line come up with a dozen dozen retellings of the punch in '59, but I'm finding little else. What's the story, or rather, the story after the story? Thanks!

What classical composer's sonic "vision" would most closely parallel that of Ornette's? Not literally, of course -- but who in the classical world would you say was maybe almost a kindred spirit of Ornette's? The name that comes to mind for me is Charles Ives, but I'd be curious what anyone else thinks.
