Hi Chuck. Not looking for dirt, or all the gory details -- but curious about how you crossed paths with FZ. Not too surprised he could/would have been a real pain, but he wouldn't be the first jerk of a musician whose musical output I've admired.

Don Cherry, circa 1995?

Surely the Roach group is from 1960 (my eyes aren't that good, but that year matches my memory of when that lineup played w/ Max). As much as I too like this lineup, I must confess I was really hoping it would be the Roach quintet with Charles Tolliver, circa 1968.

Sorry for my error above (others already caught), it was "Third Season" that has the previously unreleased alternate (not "Slice..."). I knew it had to be one of those two Mobley dates, since those are probably the only two Mobleys (Moblies?) where I would have ponied up another $16 just for one alternate.
-
There was a previously unreleased alternate on the recent Japanese issue of Hank Mobley's "Slice of the Top" (which I bought for the sole reason that "Slice..." and "Third Stream" are my two favorite Hank leader-dates). I think that might have been the only one, or were there any others?

Why do I feel funny when I throw out an OBI strip?

I still have that watch! Mine stopped working long ago too. -

Rooster_Ties replied to mjzee's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I always get rid of the cardboard cases on ECM's, but I keep the OBI's behind the tray card *not* cause I give two hoots about them, but if anybody would end up with any of my discs at some point the future, maybe they'd want them or something. -
Wayne Shorter Proper Box (VeeJay, some Blakey...)

I'm pretty much the same way, never have bought any new I don't think I even own any used or otherwise. The real thing or nothing, as far as I'm concerned. -

Yes, how could I forget! That's another fantastic date, and I love Herbie's planning on it too - which was also very similar to the others previously mentioned. It's a shame that Herbie didn't play on more free-leaning dates. I really like his approach so much when he was pushed in that direction. -

Yes, "TW's Trainwreck" (which doesn't sound anything like a train wreck), is the aforementioned unissued Tyrone Washington session. (I think) Herbie's playing on its rivals that of the All Seeing Eye. -

Now that I think of it, that's probably why I rank Etcetera and All Seeing Eye at the very top of the bunch, specifically because of Herbie's involvement in both. I absolutely LOVE his (Herbie's) playing on both, especially All Seeing Eye. I'm trying to think of other free-leaning dates with Herbie on acoustic piano, and other than these two (plus TW's Trainwreck), none are immediately coming to mind. Herbie's rhythmic approach on these free-ish acoustic dates is nothing short of fantastic, at least in my book. -
What's the plan for Big O in DC on Oct 17?
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I'm sure it'd be a bitch to get a B3 up the stairs to Twins, or down the stairs to Bohemian Caverns. Has anyone heard/seen an actual B3 in either space? Is there an alternate set of stairs down into Bohemian especially? The main stairs down is a pretty tiny passage, best I can recall. -
It's been many, many years ago, but I remember a blowup extra sessions disc that a friend of mine had back in Kansas City and I'm pretty sure it was the Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams material. Ever since, I've always associated online listings of "Herbie blowup extra sessions" as being the ByrdAdams stuff.

Yeah, the word on the street is that the debt limit is going to be raised, but the shutdown will continue. -

For what it's worth, I had the same problem too. On my laptop, and also on my phone. Not a big deal though, of course. -

The Oct. 17 gig here in DC at one of the Smithsonian museums could be affected by the Shutdown, depending on when it's finally resolved. What's the plan, and any thought being given to a finding a backup venue? I'm sure the status of this is probably day to day, wait and see -- but given the distance from MI to DC -- there's got a be a point where some decisions have to be made. Were you guys appearing as one stop of several here on the East Coast? I'm not seeing anything else on the calendar, so I'm guessing you're just driving out here and back? I've never been able to catch the band live in person, and I'm sure hoping this gig doesn't end up getting scuttled! I'd suggest the museum where I work as an alternate venue, but he sound would be awful (the biggest, boomiest space on the planet -- near horrible for music events) -- and besides, after-hours events here require some not insubstantial extra security expense (which is never optional) -- so I doubt it would work -- plus there's the issue of the band getting (or not getting) paid for the gig itself. If driving from Michigan, when were you going to be heading out? And, in case this does all work out, how long were you planning to be in town? I'd kind of half been planning to hang out with you guys after the gig that night -- or, perish the thought, you weren't going to start driving back (overnight) that very night right after the gig?
-
A great question would be what albums/sessions with Grant Green with organists OTHER THAN Larry Young or Big John -- are real "must haves" kind of sessions? (For those of us who feel like EVERYTHING he ever recorded with Young or Patton is "must have".)

Used copies in excellent condition for less than $40, a no- brainier if you ask me.
