  1. How early is the early footage? Hope to check this out soon, more likely in a day or two than tonight.
  2. So, what Worrell leader-dates are recomended? I used to have Funk of Ages, and remember liking it quite a bit (no idea what happened to my copy). From Wikipedia... 1978: All the Woo in the World 1991: Funk of Ages 1993: Pieces Of Woo: The Other Side 1993: Blacktronic Science 1997: Free Agent: A Spaced Odyssey 2007: Improvisczario 2009: Christmas Woo 2010: I Don't Even Know 2011: Standards
  3. Wow, solo piano! - this could be very interesting!
  4. Infinity is my favorite Lee/Jackie pairing, and (IMHO)!maybe the finest straight hard-bop date with Lee's name on the spine.
  5. Probably the most eye-opening Lee date -- for me -- was Larry Young's "Mothership". Some really amazing playing! ...and not just because of the context (for me, Young's most progressive date), but Lee really steps up. Hadn't ever thought of this before, but I sure wish Lee had recoded on a Tyrone Washington leader date. At least we do have him on Hill's "Grass Roots" and "Lift Every Voice" -- the later being probably the more interesting (for me)
  6. Won't be long until 16-Aug-2018 gets here! :-)
  7. Re: Zappa, in addition to "The World's Greatest Sinner", he also composed the score to the 1965 film "Run Home Slow". Here are the opening credits, with a theme Zappa revisited a few times over the years following... ...and given the thread topic, I guess I'll mention that this is totally safe-for-work. :-) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oEP0huRwDyc
  8. Zappa, really? I thought he did an audio-only project (a commission, iirc), that was deemed 'pornographic' by the local authorities -- or something like that. I'm not as deeply steeped in Zappa lore as I once was 10-15 years ago, so my claim is certainly not authoritative.
  9. I agree. I would think anyone under 35 or 40 who knows about Herbie, might easily not know of his connection to Miles.
  10. After Wayne left, the saxophone chair never became much of a focus for me with any of Miles' 70's bands. Some are certainly better than others, but they are clearly not the linchpin holding everything together -- nor the primary draw, by any means.
  11. I've never seen Lebowski either, I'm afraid.
  12. Can any of these silences be added to fix some of Keith Jarrett's more vociferous recordings?
  13. Wondering if any footage of him in Death of a Salesman will ever surface? Hadn't realized he was ever in a production of Salesman, and in retrospect, he would have been amazing to see in a live theatre setting. (Or if any significant live footage of him on-stage, for that matter.)
  14. Third. Huge loss. I imagine he elevated every film he was in - certainly those I saw.
  15. Couldn't resist the UK price from Amazon, pre-ordered.
  16. Footprints in 1970?!! Crazy! Never even knew he ever played the tune after early '69. (Well, other than that one all-star gig in Paris(?) in '91.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3inZNj3ZcQ
  17. Best guess as to the year this is from? Will definitely be checking this out later.
  18. Now THAT's tempting! Thanks for the tip!
  19. The first Japanese edition that came out in the early 90s was only seven discs, because they cut a couple solos here and there (slightly) probably bass solos. 95% of the music is the same as the US, but the US edition is just slightly longer here and there on a couple of disks, if I remember correctly.
  20. Thanks Chuck, appreciate the offer. Truth be told, I'd really love to read all the reviews from those two years - and probably half the articles too, for that matter. Anything/everything about the usual suspects you know I obsess over -- but really almost anything from those years that I (admittedly) fetishize. Which is to say I'm not sure I have as much one specific interest -- as I do MANY general interests from that specific period. But thanks! - I do appreciate the offer.
  21. About a year ago, I inherited my uncle's complete collection of Downbeats, starting with the April 8th, 1965 issue (all the way up through 1987) -- so 20+ years worth, complete. I'd LOVE to supplement my collection by obtaining the complete years of 1963 and 1964, and also the first three (3) months of 1965 (which would complete that year for me). Any advice for how to track down a couple full years worth of DB's? - like I need - short of looking on eBay for what I imagine might take quite a long time? All my very earliest favorite Blue Note titles came out in 1963 and 1964 -- so while it might be a challenge to find 2.25 years worth -- I figure that's a lot less impossible than going all the way back to 1957, for instance. Anyone here have any to offer? - or any leads? (Or should I try to buy them all, one by one --which would be almost 60 specific issues.) Am also curious what others here think might be a "reasonable price" for such a purchase? What's the "going rate" these days? - particularly for complete years of DB from the 60's?
  22. If you stayed that long I hope you bought a book or at least a coffee. I did! -- Second Story Books here in DC -- best used classical CD selelection of any store I've frequented in maybe forever. I rarely get out of there spending any less than $50, mostly on music.
  23. Let's just say this -- early, middle or late -- I've never heard a Don Cherry release where he plays trumpet pretty much exclusively, that wasn't well worth hearing. At least to my ears.
  24. Heard all of Pink Floyd's "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" in a used bookstore here in DC a few months ago. Not jazz, but it was the highlight of my day!
