I *love* practically the entire Henderson Milestone box. Very underrated, me thinks, at least in certain circles.

It's a sign that you need the Milestone Years box.

Suggest a better word than 'conservative'

What would music criticism be (to say nothing of political discourse), without the use of perjoratives?!! -

Was Henze really "conservative" for this time? - particularly in the 50's and 60's?? As compared to more (or the most) cutting-edge composers of his day, I would begrudgingly say I guess so -- but relative to the commonly acceptable norms of the classical music world (around that same general time), my gosh, he certainly was anything but "conservative" (as I think the term is most commonly understood). When I think of composers who were both somewhat forward-thinking (but certainly never cutting edge) -- I think of folks like Vaughn Williams, or Barber -- both of whom I like (especially Barber's 2nd Symphony, which I think is very modern, in its own way). Heck, even Korngold's lone symphony is a lot more forward-thinking than much of the rest of his output. And, heck, even Copeland(!) dabbled in serialism -- but I guess, since he did it a couple decades after Schoenberg, so was that (somehow) being conservative? I guess maybe, but intuitively that just seems so wrong. I do think the term is complicated -- but I think deservedly so, because both the context of the use of the work (and considering the audience for whom the writing is for), along with what the general norms of a particular artistic medium are in a given time (for the wider audience) also should have an impact on whether the use of the term is accurate (or not). I don't think Cage and Feldman reset the bar for what was to be termed "conservative" overnight (or even after a decade). When something is somewhat "radical" -- I think it retains some aspects of that "radical"-ness, at least for some reasonable period of time (50 years? - 75 years?). At least in terms of classical music. Maybe with jazz those time-limits are compressed. And with pop music, even shorter still. Tricky, that word, I will admit that. -

Old timey? Behind the times? Stuck in the past? All kidding aside, I think in many circumstances it's perfectly fine to use the word "conservative" to denote an approach that's out of step with current or more modern thinking. No value judgements there, just a temporal discription of what is new (or newer) thinking, vs. prior thoughts, ideas, or conventions. -
Live music/concerts in NYC in early November?
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Just saw this in another "what's going on in NYC" thread, and thought I'd cross-post the info here (for my benefit later)... -
How does his trombone playing compare with his cello playing?

Jim Alfredson's Dirty Fingers - A Tribute To Big John Patton

So what's the complete sessionography look like? i.e., what are the names of all 20 tunes? Would love to get my head around what all was finally done for this project, both the 9 tunes on the CD -- but everything else too. And then piece together where the originals came from (what albums they represent). Haven't been following things as closely as some around here, but never the less, I'm really looking forward to hearing the results!!! -

Seriously, does anyone really think that much if any of Henze's music is particulaly conservative? -

Hans Werner Henze? The big DG box (with something like 14 discs - mostly white spines, with (literally) a rainbow of colo(u)rs as an accent at the top of the spine). Henze? Conservative? Pardon my French, but WTF?? -

Organissimo at the Smithsonian - October 17, 2013
Rooster_Ties replied to BeBop's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I'll definitely be there. Only about 3-4 blocks from where I work, how convenient!! -
I kind of thought (presumably ancient) LP issues of air-checks were kind of given a pass on this rule. I know, know -- nothings ever been said about that officially -- but I've always figured that if something was old enough to be from the LP-era (and presumably WAY out of print), that actually discussing the LP's themselves (including finding them) might not be such a horrible idea. The theory being that the older the source of the media itself (in this case, the vinyl -- not the content), the less of an issue it was. I could see inquiring about where I could find an old LP of something (quasi-legal, at best), where inquiring about where to download the very same recordings would be off limits. Just my 2 cents, and I'm perfectly happy however the powers-that-be prefer. PS: Or another way of looking at it -- it's the very "after-market" nature of (old) bootleg LP's that (I think) should make this less of an issue. It's not like one could find this LP on Amazon, or as a (current) commodity item on any other on-line source. I'm thinking the statute of limitations is long gone in terms of when an old bootleg LP was actually pressed -- what, 25+ or even closer to 35+ years ago?

Rene McLean - favorite recordings, and questions for the man himself
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Just casual conversation between sets, or after the gig. Nothing formal planned -- so I'll need to pick 2 or 3 questions/topics (at most) -- as I don't want him to feel interrogated. -

I have New York Calling on CD, with a bonus track too, iirc. A really fine date! -

I sure wish he had recorded more in the '70's especially. I'll normally buy almost anything he's on from that decade. -
Hoping to hear and meet Rene McClean this weekend up in Baltimore. Not really planning to ask much about his dad/step-dad (depending on where you read), but more about his own recordings and live performances over the years -- and especially some particular musicians he's worked with -- most notably... Tyrone Washington(!) -- Rene was on TW's last leader-date "Do Right" (the more populist and/or funk-oriented of Tyrone's dates -- an attmept at "feel good" jazz?). Also, one of the only tunes on 'The Trainwreck' that is listed with an actual title, is called "Rene" (alternately "Renee" from one other source). I remember some speculation around these parts about that being some further (possible) TW/RM connection (pretty speculative, I know, but since there are other TW/RM connections, who knows?). Maybe the one and only "Jackie" question I might ask is about is that unreleased Jackie date with Tyrone. Nathen Page plays on Rene's first leader-date, and Page was a fantastic(!) and (I think) very underrated guitarist (or at least certainly under-recorded). Several Woody Shaw dates with Rene!! Another interesting date (that doesn't even appear in Rene's own discography, on his own website) is from 1981 or '82, with Rene and also Terumasa Hino(!). Anyway, what other things would you ask Rene if given the chance? Again, especially stuff not about Jackie - since I figure he gets that all the time.
-
Jim beat me to it, but Billy Harper is the first name I always think of when someone mentions "post Coltrane". I've never heard a leader-date of his that was anything less than fantastic - so just jump right in with anything you can find with his name in the spine.
-
Will give $100 when I get the chance this weekend, if not before. Please pony-up people!!
-
That's half the reason that I would buy something like this to encourage more releases like it! Granted, I am fairly interested anyway, but all I know is that I want more 1970s releases, especially if they involve multiple different leader dates within the same release - assuming the material is worthy.

Where's that crazy hot-rod of a drive in Paris(?) - I think it was Paris - shot in the late 70's, as I recall. It's on Youtube, I'm sure of it. -
Even if I already had half or more of this material, I'm sure I'd order one -- just to be supportive of Mosaic dipping into the 70's (or really late 60's -- on a label associated with the 70's). I think I had nearly every one of Woody Shaw's Muse dates, but I still jumped on that one as a pre-order. Didn't hurt that what I did have of those was on those crazy 32Jazz releases (some of which was in packaging that I like even less than digipaks!) -- still I'm thrilled that Mosaic is starting to work on 70's and "70's-ish" (or is it "70's-esque"?) material.
-
"The Dolphy Series" -- holy crap! Whole BUNCH of dates there I've been curious about for eons. I don't think I've heard any of them, save for Jordan's two Strata East leader-dates ("In The World" is really amazing -- and I think "Glass Bead Games" is one of the finest sax + piano trio dates I know). I'll pre-order this one for sure! -- Tom PS: Kinda wish it had included Jordan's 70's Muse leader-dates, but how can I be disappointed with any Mosaic that includes that much Strata East material.

AMEN to that!!!
