Dexter Blue Note 60s box vs RVGs
Man with the Golden Arm replied to sjarrell's topic in Recommendations
Didn't that Box bust up all of Gordon's LPs into a sessions chronology? I recall Giddins being put-off by the bastardization of sequencing. -

Dan, those sound sweet. Can't go wrong with the great stuff to work with. Never one for "sports talk" I did become an avid listener of WEEI up here from the Angels Series thru this past weekend's events. One orchestration came during the pre-game of ALCS#4 against the Yanks. They played the entirety of Springsteen's "Darkness On the Edge of Town" behind Castiglione's calls of all the Sox mishaps and Yankee triumphs from the first three games. I was chuckling at the brilliance of that call feeling just how out of reach what came to be was at the time. You can check out a great deal of audio from WEEI at MLB.com. Not sure how swipable those files are but they provide some nice moments from the hometown chops. BTW I picked up an extra Globe if you need one. Congrats to all !!! ...and that memory of wiffle ball emulation runs across the yards. I recall the "heel up" with Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson at the plate or the half dozen windmills when Stargell was in the box. And thank god for the Sox that the din of Velcro will be heard in New England neighborhoods "nomar"! -

Dang Mike, that thing is quite the ringer. This would not be out of place in JimR's 'Hard Bossa' thread or a snip from Marcoliv's BFT. Tossed this one back and forth for a while and figured it was a standard cut by an early sixties bossa trio of some sort. And why play the guitar when you can give it to yer friend on the cover and take the bench instead? He sounds so much more "latinized" than Tjader who comes up again on the next tune. As nice a juxtapomozition as cuts 1 & 2. Good one!

A few years back I happened to have a Zorn CD (one with a white printed back card and a clear tooth tray) that had the liner notes on a round piece of card stock. I took the jewel apart to insert the paper disc behind the tray and it turns out that old Zorny boy had dropped an extra B&W photo of an oriental girl doing a bit of self awareness sandwiched between what I found to be a double layered tray card. So what I have is either illegal or a collectable.

So what indeed! It would be different if those asking Mike to go above and beyond what he thinks he should do had any valuable input into the whole BFT discussion in the first place. (let me make a disclaimer that these past few test have had me w/o much time as well or even without much knowledge but I at the very least had the respect for the compiler to put up something a bit more than DKDC, HAFC, NMCoT blah blah) Just look at the slew of those folks who asked to be hipped to Mike's test (that he mailed from across the world) versus how many actually put up some lines. Just shouting in from the stands above the dugout: "Do WtFYWtD".

I was under the same spell as you mike and sampled her stuff somewhere after seeing the cover on DGA. I cut it short after one cut... all I needed to hear & that she has no boogaloo in her. And as far as Canadian popsters go ... who's her competition? Then again this opinion comes from someone who was recently all steamed up about rachelle farrell I lernt my lesson ... talk about singing to make herself heard... ugh

Ay you!!! it's clad in A-U! mind you. now i'm feeling gildy.

Aiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Care to elaborate? Shelly my guess should not make ye of infinite knowledge sad??

Boy, Mike, there sure is a complete turnaround on Disc II. So, so much music to digest ... this seems like a well planned stream of consciousness set. A maniacal late-nite jockey tossing so much at you that you can't turn the dial. Without further googling or AMG-ing... 1) Walkin' bass line with swankily Manne-ish drums. Loses a bit of it's late-nite feel when the ensemble comes in but that soloist is where it's at. While I don't know my Moody some listening from the older BFTs had me listening to more of his stuff here and there but never finding a soul-ful bluesy avenue. This might be a Golson melody? I'm really just guessing. 2) Wow ... #1 was reminding me of this sound here and must have been for Mike too. "Blues Walk" cousin of some sort? 3) Is this that Clifford Brown "Theme" that Miles and the Messengers would play out between sets. I'm wearing my jazz neophyte dress here. 4) No idea but I love this cut!!! 5) Leave this to EKE! Got to be his singer who I can't think of but is not him on piano. 6) Another that the #1 fan from Spain will ace! Sorely not up to snuff on the Duke. 7) "How High..." in a pre-exotica mood. Machito, Cugat or a bit of Prado being serious. 8) Oopappada ... and not even that ... no guesses here. 9) Jungle drums and then violins...? fantastic ! 10) ? 11) Should know this but don't... wild guess of Gordon or Moody ... boy these BFTs are really showing me that I don't cut it when it comes to pure stylistic recognition. 12) Bells sounding like something French maybe? What a bouncer!! 13) Another tune on the tip of the tongue... who am i kidding .. this is so familiar but i would never guess it. Love them little strangled banjo lix!! 14) !!!! A latin Hard Bossa killer. "Tico Tico? "Gee who is this? I probably have this pianist somewhere. A bit long for the Brazilian trios. Sounds like that Luis Carlos Vinhas guy but the piano is much more "grand" and funky. And the bass has a certain twang to it that's not quite old enough. 15) JimR will tell all... Sacha Distell? 16) Loping Honker from the Proper box? no clue but it's grrreat! 17) Some more pretty vibes. I love that extension he gets from the bells, playing just slow enough to keep the groove but letting the afterglow happen. This is a beautiful piece. 18) Some Franco violins and I have no idea of those. 19) Another Honker that has that "Say Hey Willie!" feelin'. All good here! Arnette Cobb?? 20) Another great track ... change up after that last one that fits in perfectly!!! 21) I'm going with Mike's boys the Latin Jazz Quintet here. Fantastic!!!! this is the nutts. 22) A bit of "Yesterdays" to it in that style that Haden scooped for his Quartet West stuff. This is the real deal tho, right? Another absolute beauty. 23) "Mike's Gone" nice closer This has got to be that Moody I could not think of from track #1... but it sounds new? hmmm..... WOW Mike... what a great listen. This one is the coup of BFTs... really separates the ears from the steers. Can't wait to read the commentaries from those cats in the know. Killer set and thanks for the superb collection. way

The ONLY reason I know this is that I have the Gilles Peterson Impressed II and that Bev must not be around. Tune was written by Hayes from the album 'Change of Setting' (World Record Club, ST 631) London '67. Players are: Hayes, Gonsalves, Ray Nance: tpt Tony Coe :alto Jackie Sharpe: bari Ronnie Scott: tenor Tery Shannon: piano Ronnie Stephenson:drms John Lambe: bass It is a GREAT tune!!! Phenoms just plying trades all around. I wonder about the rest of this album? Outstanding cast here but NO Ronnie Ross. (Very RR tune!)

Damn! that one was a complete montage of the Red Sox History and why the poor folks here in Boston weep. So how bad is Schilling's ankle? That was a nasty turn last week and who knows what he was pumped up on and how that might have affected his head that he so completely lost after the first. And I think Pedro is much more hated in NY than he is loved in Fenway at this point so putting him up away in the Bronx might fuel his ire more than a group hug. I hope. -
1. Pedro`s Walk (Ian Hamer) (4:43) 2. In The Night (Tubby Hayes) (4:37) 3. Russian Roulette (Jimmy Deuchar) (6:15) 4. Raga (Harry South) (2:35) 5. Parisian Thoroughfare (Bud Powell) (3:05) 6. The Killers Of W1 (Jimmy Deuchar) (6:08) 7. The Scandinavian (Harry South) (4:38) 8. Israel Nights (Bobby Wellins & Jackie Sharpe) (4:22) 9. Sasa-Hivi (Peter King) (4:03)

So I just received my first "Copy Controlled" CD from The Bastards. Blue Note EMI Italy. Nicola Conte 'Other Directions' (a sometime sucker for that BN sounding acid jazz or whatever it is but that's not the point, though that 'Jet Sounds' of his was good and it spun off a bunch of lesser stuff fer sure). Well it seems that this stuff don't work. Ripped it onto my Mac OSX and wasted a CDR just to see. All sounds fine ... no glitches... nothin'. So what's the CC doing here as I have no idea how to go about busting through it other than burning it like a regular disc? The only thing it might have done is lay down a bunch of really sappy vocals (why couldn't they have been in portuguese?) overtop of some really tremendous music.

Don't Worry-We'll Stitch Him Up
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Man I would not normally reply to this but here's my wacky story from about age 9: How my parents scared the hell out of me! When I was a kid, Dad sometimes had a pile of burnables in the back of the yard. Well, Mom went to the store one Saturday and got a bunch of bags of groceries. She piled all the emptied bags into one and I hauled it off to the pile that Dad had going with some leaves and brush. Unfortunately she didn't take a fresh can of Black Flag out of the bottom of one of the sacks. So as I was standing about ten yards away watching the stuff cook ... KABOOOOM!!!! You'd of thought a bomb went off ... the cut open, now bottomless can of Black Flag rocketed out of the pile and zing !! hit me right in the thigh leaving a nice circular bleeding gash and me jumping around the yard like a caffeinated one legged contra dancer. Another few inches or so and they'd have shipped me off to castrati lessons. Luckily no stitches were needed and some good butterflying and mercurochrome set it straight, and thank goodness that I ate alot as a kid! -
And after the first few notes I thought she might be related to Jim Pepper. Luckily that passed.

Here goes in one sitting... 1) Busby Berkey Bells. ? 2) Electric bass and scattin'... I'll move on for those reasons. 3) Larry young-ish but not cause it's too new sounding. Be interested to see the guesses here. A bit too light on the horn for me. 4) Latin go lightly. Another that's is newer than I'd like to venture a guess for. I bet Mike tossed this in to sate his Latin Jazz Quintet tastes. Nice tune here now that the bari gets going. Sounds like something on the Concord label? 5) No clue at all AGAIN! But dis be da bes so far! 6) "LL" by who knows?.. this is a real nice rendition. Another good un. 7) "Only a PM" some femy beat box with a nice Caribbean waft. Don't think i've ever heard this woman so no clue again!! 8) This one will get the nod immediately form JR. Has a real Wes sound but no idea of the organist. I will defer to the heads that prevail. 9) Hip-Hop vox... combined with this smooov jazz would make guys like Matt Shipp, dj Logic et al confess their sins. Considering this one goes on for about seven minutes too long my guess is that it's some Roy Hargrove thing. The piano player is good! but the rest ... ugh!!! 10) Lee's tune by? hmmm, Too obvious to be Hendricks - sounds a bit mod-er than that. an AMG googling easy one I would think if only I could get with that new format there. My guess is some post Tamiko-esque version by Hendricks. 11) Nice one! I like it. That crazy harping is reminding me of that Wilner / Mingus disc that all were up in arms about. 12) Another beat-box here. All the voice work here is touching on such a variety of styles ... and the fact that I listened to this after Tom Wait's new one -'Real Gone' - makes for quite the polarization. Thanks Mike for such a "great sounding" BFT at the very least. I'm anxious to move on to #2 this afternoon.
