I snagged this after this thread first appeared ... and I like it!!! All the descriptions are apt, esp the one from DrJ - Brian Wilson through post-punker shreader. Perfect! Eric

hmmm ... can't find the DVD anywhere ... help? I have only seen his show a few times, but I find it to be very biting and spot-on. Would love to have a DVD ... Eric

Little Stewie rules, daddy-o, and you know it!

I caught a few of the episodes on Comedy Central and then sprung for a DVD of the fist two seasons. It is a total scream. It is not for the meek or for children, but man it is sharp. Eric -
I snagged this one too - echo the previous comments. I also really like the new Phil Grenadier on FSNT. Kurt Rosenwinkel plays guitar on it ... it really is a fun CD to listen to. Eric

BTW, what is the take on the Duke of Stratosphere (sp?)? I have that CD but have never been able to get into it. Anyone have any favorite tunes worth drilling into? Eric
-
but Al, it's so stupidly GOOD It does have a slightly annoying quality to it (that song), but I have really grown to like it. Good record overall. Eric

Lon, I think he does it with Joe Strummer? Have you heard Strummer's version (from his new CD). Very nice, as is most of that CD (Streetcore). Eric
-
you might want to try and snag one of the American CDs used on amazon for a taste I have the first one and come back to it often - it is a blast to listen to I have been waiting on this set, just to find a good price used Eric

Mark Turner is very nice, not so "in your face" Eric

From a business perspective, having profitable artists like Jones allows the jazz guys to get a "free pass" from time to time. The beancounters will lay off and with any luck, that will mean the sustainability of the reissue program. For me, that is a good thing. The jazz guys may or may not capitalize on that opportunity, but at least it is there. Remember, this is the label that post-Sidewinder, opened many an album with the obligatory "funk" tune. Hardly a purist move and not all that different from what is going on today in the grand scheme of things. Plus, at least the pop artists (Green, Morrison, Jones) have achieved respect and artistic integrity in their own fields. Eric

I saw the policy clarification at AAJ over the weekend when this board was down and had the same reaction that the thread-starter here had - wow - that is petty. Point has been made elsewhere, but this is a very, very small corner of the world we are spending time with and it does not seem to make sense to censor each other. Plus, try as you may, you can't really regulate human behavior at this level. I feel sad for the AAJ administrators because I think this will only have a negative impact on their site. Having said that, this continues to be a great spot. For me, it reflects the "real" human interactions I have - mostly civil, mostly intelligent and mostly interesting. Sure, people get passionate and pissed and say things they wish they hadn't from time to time. But whatever ... it is REAL and it is fun. Eric

Yeah, I have all four of the Fuzzy Warbles stuff. It is mostly Partridge demos. Reminds me of Scoop, the Townshend demos. I would say there is one good song for every two junkers. But, I do find it pretty interesting and one day I'll burn a "best of". I will second the rcommendations for Apple Venus and Wasp Star. First class XTC in my book. I find I struggle a bit with Oranges and the one that followed. Some good stuff, but some of it seems a but forced to me. Big Express has its moments, but is one I can live without. I love English Settlement. Killer songs and playing straight through. The opening song cycle on Skylarking, IMHO, ranks with anything by the Beatles or anything off Pet Sounds. FWIW, I like Dear God and think it fits in OK. Does anyone see "Your Dictionary" from Apple Venus as sort of a musical cousin to it? Maybe in the ranting factor - I don't know for sure. Eric

if you haven't, you might check out: www.fantasyjazz.com Eric

Anyone know who plays on "Night Glider" - a Groove cD from the 70s, originally issued by Sonny Lester. The thing totally kicks butt, BTW!!! B) Eric
-
Al, perhaps that is the case. Do you have any of the Fuzzy Warbles stuff? I bought all four, but have not had time to digest yet. Seems like some interesting stuff, some crap too. Eric

Big Al strikes again ... XTC (and the albums you mention) totally kick ass!!! Eric

Big Al and BFrank, I picked up the live album on Rhino on a lark and love it. They sound great - raw and in your face. Among other things, they play a wicked version of "Satisfaction". If you like MM, you will love this! Eric PS Lloyd did play on several M Sweet CDs ...

31 bids so far ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4&category=1172 Amazing ... Eric

No doubt - when this does arrive, it should be a keeper. I can wait ... Eric

I like the cover. I think the sound quality of the music is fine - actually pretty good considering the recording circumstances. There are a couple spots where it is rough, but who cares. The MUSIC kicks ass!!! It really is fun to listen to Eric

Indeed. There is only one true new record store left in KC and their jazz selection and prices are pretty bad. I buy almost everything online these days - you even get the worlds best used CD store with Amazon. I used to go to Tower in NY and SF on business trips 10-15 years ago and loved the experience. Decent prices, great selection, imports out the wazoo. The internet has changed all that ... Eric

There is also a Warne Marsh CD in this series that is excellent. Eric
