  1. Likewise and received a nice note from. Bertrand at DarkTree. I really do like that cover ...
  2. I suppose I could take the "easy" route and pay 3x retail on ebay after the stores close
  3. Cool - liked the sound-clip and obviously the carpet on the cover is genuine circa-1975
  4. Although I listen to all kinds of music, by and large my interest in RSD would be for jazz. In particular - this year - I would love to get a copy of the Wes Montgomery title. But - really don't want to go to the effort of calling around to my local used stores to see if they ordered it. And - having done this before - I really don't want to stand in line for an hour to "maybe" get a copy. But that is just me, middle-aged and semi-grumpy
  5. That makes some sense, although as I understand it, Spotify offers a "free with ads" tier whereas Tidal does not. I use/pay for both, Spotify for the family, Tidal for me My preference for Tidal is more around the look & feel, so maybe I'll make the move to "premium" from "HiFi". Having said that, can I tell the difference in sound quality between the two? Honestly I have never tried to compare the two under "serious listening conditions". My only commentary on the whole sound quality thing is that *occasionally* when I play music from iTunes to my stereo, I will have a reaction along the lines of "that sounds like crap". And, sure enough, when I check, it is an mp3. But that is probably on older mp3s and I have never really had that reaction using Spotify. FWIW, and I am sure I am in the significant minority, but I often use these services to "preview" something that I will later buy. But I think that is generational "have to own the physical copy" or maybe just stupid (i.e why?)
  6. FWIW, this seller shows the set as available (as of 3/23) in the UK. http://www.ebay.com/itm/JOE-FARRELL-ORIGINAL-ALBUM-CLASSICS-5-CD-ALBUM-SET-NEW-MINT-23RD-MARCH-/301550745142?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4635d33636
  7. I did notice this am that their mobile layout looks a little more "Spotify", but it is still a cleaner experience. Moving to $9.99 should be a huge plus.
  8. OMG, one of the funniest posts I have read in some time!
  9. I may a little slow coming to this party, but discovered that my library card (and a PIN) allows me to listen a pretty extensive jazz collection online. It is operated by Naxos Music Library, but to my delight I discovered they carry much more than Naxos material. All the majors seem to be there, so the Blue Note, Fantasy, Atlantic catalogs, etc. There are a bunch of labels, many of which I have never heard of. But they have Bethlehem, ESP (over 75 titles), MPS (over 150 titles), MAXJAZZ & Winter & Winter. The interface is kind of clunky, but who cares.
  10. So I had a chance to visit Rick Ballard and Grooveyard. He is doing well and the place was jam-packed with great stock. I could not stay nearly as long as I hoped, but did have a nice chat with Rick. One anecdote was interesting - his move from being 100% wholesale to adding the retail store. He described the wholesale business as being a grind whereas he enjoyed the retail side much more as he became acquainted with his (often long-time) customers. Warm, friendly, funny guy! Chuck - I relayed your story to Rick. His recollection was that it occurred in San Francisco at an annual independent record dealers event. He described those events as fun, with the housepitality rooms being particularly hospitable And not to embarrass you Chuck, but he described you as being one of the finest guys in the record business.
  11. Eric

    Paul Jeffrey, RIP

I saw him at Duke a couple times in the 80s. On other occasions he brought in Art Blakey, Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson. R.I.P.
  12. I have checked them out - looks like an interesting label. Eclectic ...
  13. Thanks again everyone and Chuck I will make a point to visit with Rick. Very excited about the trip!
  14. I will. I have a distinct memory of going there in the late 90s/early 00s and speaking with him. I remember him telling me about putting out a large slug of Mosaic boxes one day and and selling every one of them within hours. We are staying in Berkeley for one night, so this will definitely be a stop.
  15. Thanks everybody. Many familiar names, great to see places like Grooveyard are still around.
  16. I used to travel there extensively in the 90s/00s, and always made a point to check out as many record stores as I could. I am headed back out with the family next week and am looking for ideas. I seem to remember some good jazz shops on Telegraph in the Berkeley/Oakland area, have no idea what might still be there. I suppose I could ask "the Google", but would much rather rely on the expertise here ... Oh, and any recommendations for good jazz clubs would be much appreciated.
  17. Looks like they bought Tidal. Unlike Spotify, they stream lossless. I have been using them for 4-5 months and prefer it to Spotify. For me, their interface is much less cluttered and cleaner than what Spotify has become. Unfortunately, they charge $19.95 per month which is 2X Spotify. I am hard-wired to buy physical product , so I use both Spotify and Tidal to preview music as much as anything. I think I will pass on the editorial content ... not b/c it is Jay Z, but hey, I just want to listen.
  18. I don't know, not in the business, not a musician, but a hardcore music junkie for 40 years. When I heard the tune, i thought it was a rip-off of "Got to give it up". And I get all the borrowing stuff. But from my lay perspective, this was more than that, legally or not.
  19. it is gone, thanks to those who responded
  20. Long story, but would up with two copies. I will sell the extra copy for $10 anywhere in the US postage paid. PM if interested.
  21. I have been looking at the AudioEngine Bluetooth receiver as an alternative to the Airport Express. Maybe use it in an office. There is a good review of it at computeraudiophile.com. I currently have a Bluetooth speaker in my office at work and my daughter has one in her bedroom. Both are handy and sound fine for their respective rooms. It seems to me the AudioEngine device ups the game a little, i.e. gives you the opportunity to connect to a stereo with a relatively high-quality Bluetooth signal. Product link: http://audioengineusa.com/Store/B1-Bluetooth-Music-Receiver The choices and alternatives for all this stuff (under the category "home music streaming") are growing at a fairly rapid pace, which is great for consumers.
  22. I have all my music on iTunes and use an Apple Airport Express to stream to my stereo(s) (one for each stereo). I have had this setup for 3-4 years and it works very well. I have both Spotify and Tidal on my iPhone and can stream both of them through the Airport Express. At $99 each, this might be something worth checking out.
  23. Put me down for a "like" as well
  24. LOL to the above exchange, courtesy of my wife no less
