  1. If you like Natural Soul you will like this. My two favourite Donaldson albums. But this is organ based music, so in that sense its different from Blues Walk which is more bop than blues. Add "Good Gracious" to make a swell organ trio (the early 60s-ish LD organ recordings, which to me seem a little more consistent than the late 60s-ish organ recordings). This one has Grant Green and Baby Face Willette. I love this stuff - joyous, nice playing, perhaps slightly corny in spots, but what they hey - it is fun stuff.
  2. Not exactly. The tabloids are just full of lies, half-truths and outright slander. People do not sue because it is at the very least an incredibily difficult thing to prove and at most, expensive. Lawsuits or not, lies stand for truth in this country on a regular basis. There is a difference in severity between tabloid trash and the accusations that are being directed towards the ballplayers. If I were Clemens and I were innocent and I would be livid right now. He obviously has the resources to go after Mitchell et al (as do others) and with MLB agreeing to indemnify Mitchell, there are plenty of deep pockets. Even if you don't have the cash, there are plenty of attorneys who would take this on. If you were clean, why wouldn't you go after these guys?
  3. Seems that if someone was falsely accused, they would file a libel suit. In fact MLB agreed to indemnify Mitchell if this does in fact occur. Should be interesting to see how many suits we see ...
  4. The Real Me takes it for me!
  5. Not really - 'less pastoral' would be my description. Side 1 has quite a formal feel to it, with the extra instruments providing something of an orchestral backdrop at times. Side 2 of the LP seems to me quite distinct from side 1 though ('Mtume' etc), with a sound that is sort of reminiscent of the 'Now' session but without the voices. Almost Strata-Eastish. Really though, the LP has a quite distinct - and darker (I think) - sound to any of the other Hutch albums. Not sure if that helps? That does! Thanks! I am realy looking forward to this one. I've had it on lp for years and have always enjoyed it. Good description above ...
  6. I am not a player, but my sons play - started them with Squires ~ 5 years ago, definitely recommended my sense is that Fender is using these more to get aspiring young guitarists "hooked" on the brand and are putting out a relatively high quality product at that price point
  7. Love the Who, even Face Dances.
  8. rosewood doesnt suck. it's kickass to these ears. I wasn't saying that I think it sucks, I agree it kicks ass!
  9. Damn straight!!! I don't think of it as a "dated 70s sound" as much as a "cool 70s vibe". I love all that Woody Shaw stuff. Of my 30+ Mosaic sets, that is the one (i.e Woody Shaw Columbia) I listen to the most. Desert island stuff for me.
  10. yes sometimes "dated" is a nice way of saying "sucks"
  11. My son just finished the P-SAT (P as in "pre" - given to sophs in high school). Get this - one of the grammar questions referred to BJP, as in something like "correct this sentence - 'Big John Patton are a jazz organist'". How about that!
  12. a pair of his Nike golf shoes ... best I have ever owned, very sturdy and comfortable
  13. I listened to this the other day. It was great to hear the Quadraphenia stuff live. I would buy this in a second!
  14. I think the trick is to place it right next to another potato and periodicall tap them while they are cooking.
  15. Will there be pot seeds in the spine?
  16. I received a note from Amazon saying that the new "estimated arrival date: 10/29/2007 - 11/12/2007".
  17. Funny, for all the enthusiasm shown here for this one, it has never really resonated with me. So yes, I am probably in the "boring" camp. But perhaps what that means is that I am in the "not listening closely enough" camp. Or perhaps I am in the "I had one set of expectations and this record did not meet them" camp. But tonight I will pull it out and give it a close, objective listen. That is the great (and fun) thing about getting older ... you can give things a second or third chance and then "poof", you love it. Or, (turd sound), you still don't like it

  19. What he said. What they said.
  20. that is pretty funny
  21. Agree with your assessment - very, very cool stuff.
  22. Box duly stuffed Nice to see you are in the lead - the power of the Big O!!
  23. As I mentioned above, I really like this place. Their used jazz selection typically contains no gems, but they have some interesting new jazz vinyl. They have a great selection of rock (classic, alternative, punk, etc.) vinyl, including a nice 45 selection (new stuff mostly). Last time I was there I picked up a couple great funk compilations on CD. Very eclectic place and a great place to visit so long as your tastes extend beyond jazz.
  24. Rooster is being nice/generous. The town sucks for vinyl. Sucks. Sucks. Sucks. Love Garden in Lawrence is good, but more for pop/rock/punk than jazz. I love the place and they have a good CD selection, both new and used. But again, slim pickings on jazz. Now if you want some obscure soul/funk compilation, it is a great place. Sorry to break the news. I would focus your KC visit on BBQ instead
