  1. Wow - Louisville is out!
  2. While the food and drink looks spot-on, I take exception with Louisville knocking off my Jayhawks! We will be ready!
  3. Lon - let us know how these sound - particularly the Coltrane!
  4. No doubt! So what does the Vortex set-up look like end to end? For the Olive, it connects directly to my pre-amp. I either rip directly from the Olive or through my PC as described above. I also have three Olive satellite units (separate rooms) and they along with the 4HD are connected to my home network via ethernet (could also do wireless). I use the Olive ipad app to control the system. Olive also has a web app ("Maestro") to edit meta-data within your library.
  5. I have the Olive 4HD. Bought it last summer before the 3HD came out. I like the 4HD. Setting aside the musical qualities, which are very nice, there are two essentials to getting maximum use/enjoyment out of it. First, despite the fact that it has a touchscreen and remote, the best way to control the unit is through the iphone/ipod/ipad app. My weapon of choice is the ipad and it truly makes the Olive fun to use. The second is the manner in which you import music. Until very recently I used the internal drive. This works fine except for the fact that Olive's source for meta-data - and specifically album artwork - blows. So I started ripping CDs on my PC (as FLAC files) using the dBpoweramp software and then I move them to the Olive via Ethernet. The whole digital server market seems to be moving pretty quickly, which is a great thing for the consumer. Nine months in, I am not sure if the Olive is the best solution but it works well for me. Were I to do it again today I might go for the 3HD simply because of the lower price point in the event a needle-moving solution comes out in the next twelve months. Like many people comment about these things - be they Olive products or otherwise - you do find yourself listening to a lot more music this way - which is a very good thing.

    Billy Joel

    Well put.
  7. Interesting little label for the Ranelin link
  8. Earl on I relied on the Len Lyons "101 Best Jazz Albums" book (which ultimately mentioned or gave "soft recommendations" to another couple hundred. I also relied pretty heavily on Downbeat (new issues or library copies) as well as the Rolling Stone Jazz album guide. This was all circa early 80s, pre-CD, pre-internet. None of these guides are a silver bullet. At this point I use them for general reference. I do have biases towards each - while I like the European focus of Penguin, I find it is sometimes at the expense of US artists (some of whom are summarily trashed). AMG is the ultimate YMMV guide. Plenty of 4-5 star stuff that is very average along with a bunch of 2 star gems. I also look at amazon reviews. Generally speaking people write about albums they like, but I "trust" that source as much as any - knowing the bias that might exist.

  12. still waiting here in NY.....sure would be nice to have to listen to during the one-two snowstorm punch headed our way..... Made it yesterday. Mine was packaged in an oversized box with some extra cardboard and air cushioning. But I'm confused. Is this the "desired" Japanese set? The CDs all have OBIs and the sleeves say they are manufactured in Japan. I listened quickly to Zep 1 on a small stereo in the kitchen and it sounded very detailed. I heard John Bonham in a new way. I know there was some discussion about the difference in mastering. Still waiting for mine Mine took two weeks or so.

  21. living in KC the last 25 years, I could not agree more we went from packing the house with 99% KC folks whenever they came to town to maybe drawing 15 - 20,000 when they show up, but worse, 2/3 of those folks are pulling for the Yankees fuck George indeed!
