  1. I totally agree. That's what I was getting at, not as clearly as you did, several posts back when I said "he leads the audience into cheerfully accepting extremely brutal on-screen violence as great fun because it's against the bad guys." You're right, he found just the right scapegoats (universally condemned, symbolic of all that is evil) on whom to unleash his own sadism. "Whose side are you on, me or the Nazis?" also in agreement found myself enjoying things just fine, but had this uneasy feeling 5 minutes after I walked out ... spent the next two hours trying to make the above points to my friend who attended with me
  2. I am too far from MN, but these things are great cabinets - have owned several for years.
  3. Nice on both fronts ...
  4. so where does one go to hear more of Leon Rhodes???
  5. Yeah, the Brooks was my 2nd set too ... to me, that is what Mosaic was/is all about. Talk about the thrill of discovery!
  6. Indeed ... I remember getting Monk 001 for Christmas in 84 or 85 ... and 30+ big sets (hey that is less than 2/year!) and 20+ selects later, I can report that unlike the vices above, the 30th hit is just as good as the first
  7. I bought both High Energy and Skagly and would give Skagly the slight edge. Neither are perfect, but the overall group sound is a little cluttered or unpleasantly dense on High Energy. Skagly reminds me somewhat of the stuff Woody Shaw was putting out on Columbia at the same time - and is closer to Super Blue than High Energy is.
  8. Wonder if Wounded Bird had access to said High Energy new masters for their recent issue?
  9. Small world - was there Friday on business and bought the last one
  10. I picked up Odyssey of Iska. The packaging has a bootleg feel to it - the cover colars are washed out, the print is less than crisp, tha paper is of a lower quality and the booklet had been previously folded in half. The CD itself also has a "less than professional" feel to it. The music itself sounds fine. Setting aside scarcity, I think $15 a unit is way too high, but I guess I paid it. A good way to fill in the gaps of your collection I suppose, but I would feel a little better paying $5, maybe $6.
  11. Huge to both!
  12. I have not anticipated a Mosaic set as much since waaaaaaaaay back to set 106 (Tina Brooks). This sort of thing fulfills the Mosaic vision perfectly. I only have one of the lps and cannot wait to wrap my head around the rest of this music!! That is if I can overcome my voting history and truly grasp what I am listening too ...
  13. Yep, those too. And Kansas Wildlife and Parks, kind of a local version of National Geographic
  14. The too many standards/war horses thing gets me too.
  15. Economist - for years - and have given 5-6 gift subscriptions too.
  16. Funny thing is that for a long time some band members allegedly looked down on FABLES (with Bill Berry, no "allegedly" about it--he once bluntly stated that "FABLES sucked"). I don't think they had a very good time recording the album, which may have influenced their earlier opinions about it. I really like it and enjoy Joe Boyd's production work, which I think is perfect for darker-atmosphere songs like "Feeling Gravitys Pull" and "Auctioneer." Fables has become my favorite end-to-end REM lp.

    Arthur Blythe

Always thought his Columbia years would make a nice Mosaic Select. Or the James Blood Ulmer Columbias from the same time frame, although there was not enough released material for a Select.
  18. Two points that I keep coming back to: 1. Somebody is lying their ass off. Common sense says it is Clemens. But whoever it is, they are really, really fabricating some serious BS at this point. 2. For me the bototm line is this - there does not appear to be a credible reason for McNamee to lie, emphasis on the word credible. But if he is, he will go down as the most vindictive nutcase in sports. So what seems more credible - that McNamee is a vindictive nutcase or that Clemens used steroids. Again, common sense says McNamee is more credible. I have always been a huge Clemens fan (even dragged my kids from KC to NY last summer to witness his return). If he did use steroids, the great irony is that his place in history was secure before he did so - just like Bonds. Common sense also says there is no way the physical evidence will "prove" that Clemens is lying, at least in the "beyond a reasonable doubt" sense. It will be interesting to see what Congress does. They are being jerked around in a very major way by one of these two guys. It would sure seem they don't appreciate being played for the fool and will go to some length to get to the truth. One of the more fascinating sports dramas of late.
  19. No problems here. Definitely my "preferred" Amazon Shops seller!
  20. I am a KU alum and K-State took it to us. Beasley and Walker are men among boys. These guys will be very dangerous in the NCAAs. PS - You are correct - we had not lost in Manhhatan since I was a junior at KU - and I am now 46!
  21. hey - that is pretty cool - thanks!
  22. ... what is "album only on iTunes? Mentioned before in various posts, but this is very annoying. I am sitting at work, want to listen to the song Crescent. Of course it shows up on several Coltrane albums. but all of them as "album only".
