    Gary Burton

(and kudos to all other ECMs above - aren't there still a couple later ones that have never come out on CD?)
  2. Not to hijack the thread, but I would love to see a Muse set featruing Junior Cook, Bill Hardman, Mickey Tucker and Walter Bishop Jr. There are maybe 10 lps from these artists and a lot of sharing of personnel. I have it all on lp - great stuff!!
  3. Of course this appears on 4 separate albums on iTunes - NONE of which allow you to just buy this one song I find it hard to believe they have staffers who sort through all this and decide which cuts are "album only".
  4. One of the first slabs of jazz I ever owned (from the "Small Group Recordings" Verve reissue). Love it!!!
  5. I was thinking of the same issues. Having the Mosaic set and Stepping Stones allows you to create your own CDs as you see fit BTW, I think you mean "For Sure" vs "Time is Right" (a track off "For Sure"). I absolutely adore everything from his Columbia period - it is one of the Mosaics I pull out the most.
  6. No kidding. With all the crappy stuff that has made its way to CD, the absence of this one is crazy.
  7. Wow - that is creepy. I bet Javon thinks twice about bringing him out somewhere else.
  8. Substitute kraut for onions!
  9. Those are striking - thanks for the link!!
  10. I am getting old and out of the loop - I didn't even know this was the third year! Yes, my reference point was also the old Blues/Jazz festivals. I will definitely look for this and talk it up next year. How was Javon Jackson/Lonnie Smith?
  11. I only saw Metheny (although I wanted to see Jackson/Smith!). First off, I was pretty impressed with the overall set-up. It seemed like a "big time" event, although maybe I just have low expectations. I really enjoyed the Metheny show. I liked the way he was all over the map, style-wise. I may be in the minority, but I love his guitar/synth sound (or whatever it is). I also thought Christian McBride was excellent - he is definitely a player. I have seen Pat maybe 4-5 times over the last 25 years and I always enjoy his persona - he really seems to be enjoying himself and I find it infectious. The only thing that bugged me was the "bleed over" from the other stage during his quieter songs.
  12. Exactly, on several points above!!! Jack had way more 2nds than wins if I am not mistaken.
  13. It is funny how his solo stuff generally sounds much better today than it did 20-30 years ago. Back then it was all about missing expectations. No, his solo stuff is not "great", but a good chunk of it is quite enjoyable, some of it in a guilty pleasure vein, some standing on its own. I hated London Town when it came about, but now I really, really like it.
  14. 15 (real or fake?)
  15. Now that is pretty impressive! Thanks for posting Jim.
  16. Here is a new CD: http://www.speetones.com/music.html
  17. I may well have been that guy. She is now my ex
  18. I think Todd has cranked out a lot of great songs over the years (great albums not so many). But he is very willing to experiment and has made a mark as a producer (XTC's Skylarking among others). He is much, much more than the handful of top 40 songs that he is known for. One album that is a sentimental favorite (but is completely lost in the early 80s soundwise) is Healing, particulary the Healing suite. One of my favorite all-time pop/rock songs is "Something to Fall Back On" from A Cappella (an album created entirely with his voice - synthesized and natural). PS - Never been a big Utopia fan - they are pleasant enough, but hardly "special".
  19. Wizard is a great, great album.
  20. http://www.kcrhythmandribs.com/2007/performers.html I was clueless about this - will definitely want to see Metheny, trio-style (Friday night) and Javon Jackson with Lonnie Smith (late Saturday afternoon)! Looks like some great local talent too!!!
  21. Very nice Hutcherson site, note the album by album commentary: http://www.musicweb-international.com/jazz...erson/index.htm

  23. I picked up a couple of these for my kids at Jazz Recrod Center last week. Yes, they are tight-fitting. Yes, they are very cool
  24. 2005. Read my Rodney Jones web log contribution Keep swinging Durium How can it be 2005??? Kirkland died in 1998. Per the Savant website: "In 1983 four young men got together to record a CD's worth of music they had fermenting inside their imaginations. Young and filled with energy they played like there was no tomorrow. In fact there were to be many tomorrows for these young men and each of them went on to make their mark in the jazz world. Each joined the ranks of the masters of their generation. The present CD, "Dreams and Stories" documents the collaboration of four soon-to-be greats in the early flowering of their careers. The young men? They were guitarist Rodney Jones, pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Jeff Watts. This is the music they made at those prophetic sessions back in 1983 -- music full of hopes, dreams and creativity."
