What is your favourite Mosaic for listening pleasure

(RIP) Is Jack Wilson (Atlantic & Blue Note 60s pianist) dead?
Eric replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
He also had a very nice album on DIW in the last 10-15 years. -
even when I was a little kid back in the 60s I thought this guy was a cheeseball but I have to admit this is highly entertaining

I bought something once from this guy. I was confused by the listing - thought I was getting a Contemporary lp by Sonny Simmons but what I got was a burn of that lp (with cover art) and a different CD (which was in the description, just like this Nathan Davis/Freddie Hubbard listing). I was a little annoyed - but he immediately refunded my money. His rating suggests people are OK with this - technically it seems semi-legal as you are buying one thing but getting the lp burn for free. Personally I won't buy from him again. Edit - here is that listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/SONNY-SIMMONS-rumasuma...VQQcmdZViewItem

Blue Notes--complete Rainbow and Paper Bag Sets
Eric replied to kh1958's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Agree on the $20 being high. A couple of these sometimes go higher (the Hutchersons, Mother Ship), but $10 to $15 is about right for most of them. Over the past year I have "filled in" my colection of Rainbows - now only missing one or two. I bet I had more fun tracking them down than the winner of this auction will! -
Ethics question -- leaving furniture on the street

I live in a reasonably nice older neighborhood - people put stuff out all the time and it is a "given" that it will be gone by morning. It usually is. -
I was 7 and remember being very excited. I also remember staring at the moon hoping I could somehow see it first-hand!

Weird - I just bought the Melvin Jackson CD from "TB" not 10 minutes before before I saw this thread

Yes, but once you set aside the box, nothing beats their books for ease of use. Same for the full-sixed Fantasy boxes (Monk, Evans, Montgomery). The Mosaic Selects are pretty handy too. Come to think of it, the Mosaics are probably my favorite. Seconds on the Heavyweight Champion, although I usually just pull out the individual CDs.

Michael from "The Office" seems to like this place ... -
Regardless of musical genre, most people clap after the performance. I think that is done out of custom and politeness, neither of which I have a problem with. What varies of course is the intensity of the applause. If people are moved they will reflect that in their applause. The custom in jazz is to applaud after every solo. I don't have a problem with that because it is the tradition of the music - and more importantly, people will definitely give it up when they are truly moved. Personally I like the custom associated with jazz - I think it fosters more of an engagement between musicians and the audiance.

You haven't heard Infinite Search? Get thee to the record store, young man! I never picked up the original Universal Syncopations due to the reviews on this thread, and the upcoming sequel holds even less appeal. Guy Infinite Search (or Mountain in the Clouds) is a stone classic, IMHO. It was one of my first jazz lps, before I knew who the players "were".

Are these listed on the Mosaic web site? Could not find them ... -
Just got it, have not spun it yet. Spoon and The National are two of my favorite bands. Second your recommendation for Girls and Moonlight. Sister Jack from Fiction is one of my all-time favorite songs. Among other things, the guitar solo - if you can call it that - is very cool.
-
I have not heard the latest National album, but I have Alligator and enjoy it very much. Check out the tune Abel - I love it.
-
I just got this- Journey's End. Great stuff. Inspires me to look for more Miroslav. Yes - I like that one too - glad to see others enjoying it. He has a new one coming out on ECM this month or next.

Just watched a dandy display over the beach here in North Carolina. Watching the fireworks illuminate the water was pretty neat!!

Agree 100% This happens to damn near everyone in this day and age. Another bit of advice - network, network, network. Call anyone you think might be able to help and ask them for 15-20 minutes of their time. DON'T ask them for a job, rather - ask them for their advice. There is a psychological reason for making this distinction - most people want to help, but they usually don't have a job handy and they also don't wanted to feel pressured into "finding" someone a job. BUT, if all they are doing is offerring their two cents, they are happy to do it. I have been on both sides of these situations and trust me, it WILL work. Remember, the goal going into any meeting is just to get another contact (i.e. keep the networking alive). When you meet with people, be sure to have a pitch together - tell them what you are lookng for. This sounds like a duh, but I have met with folks who don't do this very well. The point is - people WANT to help - but they have to know what you are looking for (i.e. who to send you to next). Think of networking as your new job. Get up at the normal time, get ready as if you were going to work and get on the phone (or get to your meetings). Put in at least 6 hours a day (allow a couple extra hours for record shopping as your gift to yourself). Depending on the type of job, salary you want, etc., this could take some time. Six months is reasonable. When the offer comes, be prepared to negotiate and get what you want. There is NO shame with any of this and as you search, just think about how you will someday pay it back - because someday you will

Good luck FFA!!

I have bought maybe 20 lps from this guy - he has a nice selection of reasonably-priced, well cared for 70s jazz lps - allowed me to fill in a few gaps
