  1. That's good for me. Hey, and I had the sense to request a title by David!
  2. Pm sent, thanks./
  3. This thread caused me to check Amazon for available recordings by Hayes, there are a lot more than I would have thought. I see there is a date with Paul Gonsalves, can anyone comment on that one?
  4. Gee, I would say $1,000 would buy a lot of speaker if one considers used. I bought a pair of ADS L1290II's off eBay last year for the grand sum of $301.50. Earlier this week I picked up a set of Altec Lansing Model 14's for $400. I am no expert but if one is patient there should be a pretty god deal of options available in, say, a 3-6 month period in any reasonably populated area. The B&W's mentioned above that retailed for $1,800 13 years ago would be sold for well under $1,000 if made available used today.
  5. Grabbed a copy today at my local Big Lots, evidently they've had cd's since before Xmas, the clerk said she couldn't remember them having cd's otherwise. Also picked up David Sanchez, Cultural Survival.
  6. Glad to see this label is being brought back to life.
  7. I would recommend a few hours studying at AudioKarma.org. Would second the idea that you will do much better looking for used equipment.
  8. My copy came in the mail today, going on the player momentarily.
  9. Would the reissue be from Ouro Negro on Adventure Music? I have that 2 cd set and enjoy it quite a bit.
  10. Thanks for the responses, keep 'em coming. Chewy, I am not writing a book, that's Chuck's sense of humor. My attention span is way to short to contemplate writing a book.
  11. I suggested on another board that Richard Bock had a habit of editing his releases and destroying masters in the process. I cited the 1st Jim Hall lp as an example. I believe I have seen other instances of this in reading liner notes through the years. Can anyone remember other examples of Bock editing master tapes?
  12. Yes, I was referring to Standard Gonz. I don't know, when I see cd's listed at Amazon for that kind of money its not the same as seeing, for instance, a completed auction price at eBay. There are 9 listed right now for between $35 - $143. I could put my copy up there too but that doesn't indicate the market value. Sooner or later some of these sellers will come down on the price, well, maybe not the guy looking for $143.
  13. Wow, the cheapest one on Amazon is $35. I imagine that if you are patient it will turn up for less. I don't really believe that this cd would command that kind of dough.
  14. The lowest note on a standard string bass is 41 Hz, tubas and organs can go lower but if you are listening to jazz you are probably not going to miss much if your speakers produce down to 40 Hz. Most decent speakers will be fine. Bass response can be increased or decreased based on the room and placement in the room as Larry suggested above. If you want to het an education about audio I can heartily recommend Audiokarma.org. They have members in Autralia too. I have not heard B & W speakers myself but comments I have seen elsewhere seem uniformly positive.
  15. You are probably off by 10 years as the cdr wasn't developed until 1988, recorders available in 1992 were around $10,000 according to Wikipedia. I came to cd's around 1987 or 88, I remember how pissed I was that I had to buy cd's by Pullen/Adams to get extra tracks after having bought them on vinyl.
  16. Can I get a download? Thanks.
  17. Crissakes, the guy is 63 years old, give him a break. I've had a chance to hear quite a bit of his stuff live from the 80's, 90's 00's. He sticks to a pretty narrow repertoire but I enjoy his playing.
  18. If memory serves (no sure thing) those Argo's have pretty short playing time, maybe right for a Select.
  19. I hardly ever get out so it was a treat to see the great Sonny Fortune in New London, CT last night. He played at a small venue called the Oasis Room located within the Garde Arts Center. Really happy to say the event was well attended. As a bonus, I sat next to and had a chance to talk with Noah Baerman, who I found out is a working jazz pianist. I am looking forward to checking out his stuff. The same place will have Donny McCaslin November 15th, I am pretty sure I will go.
  20. Another alternative you might consider for buying and selling audio equipment is Audiokarma. Depending on where you live there may be Audiokarma groups that meet periodically, there is in my area and I have had a great time at the get togethers.
  21. You guys are the best. I wish I was more active here, I appreciate the 2012 wishes. Anyone in Philadelphia? I will be bringing my daughter there for college tomorrow and will be there through Saturday night.
  22. George Adams is,for me, one of those guys that if I see he is a sideman on a date, I will pick it up (although I drew the line at the David Sanborn lp which I am sure features no Adams's solos). I am glad I took the time to see him 5 or 6 times including twice at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, MA with Don Pullen. Dates under his own name tend to be a bit uneven. Highlights for me are God Bless the Child from More Funk on Palcoscenico, Send In The Clowns from Paradise Space Shuttle, and Soft Seas from Life Line. The two lps mentioned above by KH1958, Gentleman's Agreement and Hand to Hand, are both very strong. I'd say Life Line is my favorite Adams/Pullen lp. I like the Live at Montmartre mentioned in the 1st post but most people I have talked about it with feel that Scofield didn't really fit in well. Adams/Pullen are very well documented on many radio broadcasts and audience captures. Adams work with Gil Evans is also reasonably available as are broadcast dates with Mingus. A sleeper to look for is While You Were Out by the Boston band Orange Then Blue which features George Adams extensively. I read somewhere that George Adams and Blood Ulmer both made their recorded debuts on a King lp by Hank Marr (Sounds From The Marr-ketplace). I haven't been able to confirm but I have the record and it sure does sound like Adams.
  23. I threw this on expecting to give it a minute or two before putting in the divest pile. Was actually pleasantly surprised and I will be keeping it.
  24. Hi Thom, can I get a download? Thanks.
  25. I would love to grab this, unfortunately I have two college tuitions due so no new toys for me.
