  1. I think getting there two hours late with (apparently) no apology or explanation was the first tip-off to what kind of guy this was.
  2. Just re-read In Search of Wonder by Damon Knight. Can't remember exactly when I first read it, but I think it was sometime in my late 'teens. A hell of a long time ago, anyway.
  3. Well lemme tell ya, when I was coming up in the '70s, the word was that if you dared open a door for a girl she would probably nail you for gettin' all patriarchal on her ass. Of course, if you didn't, you ran the risk of being pilloried for having no courtesy and class. Damned either way.
  4. I agree. But I was a little surprised that the "current" generation of young women (that is, 18-22 year olds) still want guys to open doors for them. Wha? I thought that was considered oh-so-50's. I would tell her to give the guys a break on that; however, the OTHER things the guy did? What a jerk!
  5. I think he may be working on Such Sweet Thunder right now.
  6. I agree. It's Buddy Bolden or bust.
  7. Do you have to look up?
  8. Maybe there was. I'll never forget Steve Allen telling this story (on someone else's show) some years ago: A few years after his show ended, realizing that the tapes of his shows contained an invaluable record of 1950's culture - not only all the jazz stars he featured, but people like Lenny Bruce, Jack Kerouac, etc. - he went to NBC to ask if he could buy the tapes from them. The woman he spoke to said she'd check on it; she came back in a while and said, "Oh, we threw all those out. We had to make room in the warehouse." Think of it - without even asking Steve if he wanted them, those morons threw away one of the greatest treasure troves of music and entertainment in existence!!! I watched all those shows as a teenager and I still get furious when I remember that story. I heard this story too. What a crime.

    Bud Shank R.I.P.

I saw him 2 or 3 years ago and his playing was superb and full of energy. Sad news indeed. RIP
  10. So that's why I haven't been able to find it.

    Duke Jordan

Same here! One of the most serendipitous purchases I ever made.
  12. Funny stuff.

    Duke Jordan

As one of my friends used to say of John Wayne: "You gotta love the Duke."
  14. An all time favorite Yeah, the show really holds up and still entertains. The older I get, the more I think this show was the sole shining moment of seventies TV. What about The Bob Newhart Show?
  15. Yeah! A big favorite when I was growing up.
  16. This makes me very glad that I got that Jenkins, Jordan, & Timmons album a long time ago.
  17. I heard that a lot of the guys that the main character deals with in the locker rooms, and performs with are "real" wrestlers, but I wouldn't know them from a hole in the wall.
  18. Oh, the heartbreak of retardation.
  19. Dude, check out his singing on "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." (Also, Lefty was great.)
  20. I should give this another listen. Today, bought Sonny Meets Hawk! on CD.
  21. Favorite artist of the moment? Vermeer.
  22. No. If they were that smart, they'd find paying gigs... Two different kinds of intelligence at work.
  23. It's interesting, but I never have felt a social aspect to record/CD buying. Is this because I went to Ann Arbor which had decent used CD stores but they weren't so far away that you had to make a special trek to get them (and without a car I wouldn't have gone to a couple of the really good at the time stores in Detroit)? Is it because I simply never had enough friends (at all, but certainly enough interested in jazz music) to go out in packs hunting jazz? Is it because I have always been a bit of a loner and don't coordinate with anyone outside my immediate family, and the decline of jazz stores has nothing to do with it. I've always been a bit of a loner, too. But if you grew up in Ann Arbor you are one lucky dude.
  24. Wow. Now THERE'S a good son! :tup
