Albums that must be heard LOUD
andybleaden replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I believe it has to be A night in Tunisia by Art Blakey etc on Blue Note This does it for me ...every time....sometimes so much ...I stick it back on again and guess the ending! The other one was a duo Art did with Paul Chambers...it was on a compilation years ago and then they stuck it on a lost session I ve'got my love to keep me warm with Art Blakey and Paul Chambers......sublime and after you have heard all of them Plaza de Toros by Larry Young or Jimmy Smith...title track from Open House again on Blue Note Last ...I promise Keith Jarrett Koln Concert on ECM bye -
From: Melbourne via Wellington, Gisborne, London, Dunedin, Jupiter, New Orleans Give it a year and a half. ← I must admit I never bother with air mail from Mosaic to the UK...I order it and get it surface and it is there within a fortnight. The one time I had a pressie and had that sent air mail...yes you guessed it...It took a a fortnight so I now do not bother and I am sure the fish never get to see it! Always arrives in perfect nick too Andy

I had the same scenario although I was missing one if I remember ..( cannot remember now....may have been Up an down) but the box set was really nice and worth getting. I got it at the start as I knew there would be a time when it was either oop or at a time when I was less 'flush' with cash Sold the rest via ebay and it paid for the set and another nearly. However if it just the booklet you seek then I am sure someone will scan in the booklet for you to read Andy

← Now that does annoy me One of the boens with the seclts for me was the shipping was a bit steep for the box sets as they are less to post that the old sets Not impressed with that Did not mind the price for big sets but for these...bit naughty really

Thats why that Lost Sessions cd was soooooooo nice when it came out. A various artists single cd of other rare tracks would be lovely if not to whet the appetite for future releases.....yes I know it aint cheap ......eh I know too that they would not sell many but hey...it was worth mentioning. They could pilot a download service with that kind of thing...just imagine..Grant Green cd with a download possibility on unreleased stuff...no risk, little cost etc Then they could judge what was gonna sell or not and take it forward. It ain't going to be too often we get the Andrew Hill type of luxury so this must be a way forward. Pleeease

I guess I have been lucky that over time I have been able to fill in the gaps from the first issued that I really wanted usually with help from people on this board. Now I do not bother trying to get them on ebay but make sure I get them first time around ( even the selects - if I do not have them on cd) I know that if I do not then in 3 years time I will be scrapping around on ebay for em. Mind you there has not been a proper mosaic big box that I have wanted since the Stanley Turrentine...they all seem to come out now as selects which I guess is okay However I have tended to concentrate only on those mosaics that have been blue note related save the vee jays which were stunners! I think you will have to try to get a matey to get a copy for you til the prices come down on ebay By the way with reference to the first thread re the curtis fuller...it is an awesome set! Andy

Yeh I have all of these and they are all very good. The Prestige ones I have commented on elsewhere and are worth a listen although Soul People is a little different from the rest. The imports are pricy but when I bought them I had never had the lps as they were real hard to find then so it was worth it for me at the time as Ihad a littel extra jazz cd cash from selling lps. If you can find cheaper copies then try Or see if you can score a few burns til they get cheaper

This is now one of the last few I would love to hear on Blue Note ( I am down to counting on fingers all those left.......this and one or two Jack Mcduff and jimmy mcgriffs as well as the three sounds vibrations and jeremy steig s wayfaring stranger and the kenny burrell freedom lp SO there is my challenge.......any body else got wind of this coming or even any of the others as the last few are so annoying

All the more reason to listen!!!!!

I am with the pro mob on this one . I have had this since it came out as I was captivated by his Blue Note work. I have gone back and forth to this set and now have it on my mp3 as a nice one to have on random Yes it is different than his BN material ..more progressive. It was so good I was playing nothing else for weeks at the time. It is a little more used looking now. I treat it as a set as valuable to me as the Mosaics. The notes were also very good with it too. I bought the Sonny Rollins set at the same time as I got a great deal but I was never so fussed with that - dunno why just never was -_- Anyway take your time with this set and enjoy! This is how box sets should be ( other than of course Mosaic!) Fav tracks are the live ones at the moment Andy

ethics? Nat Cole Box & MP3's
andybleaden replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeh you used to be able to buy them in the former Soviet states ( still can actually) as they never sold any jazz cds much ( no one used to trade there) Used to be very cheap too.......used to get about 7-9 lps with front artwork and that used to stay on the pc only These countries have very different laws regarding copyright and are gradually chaging as they come into the EU or the legal beagles get to them but it is I suspect too late. Good job too! Was surprised to see it actually as I have not seen it at all on mp3 but I guess it was a matter of time. I guess deleting the name would be appropriate then after all. Might even get Buddy Boldens stuff on mp3 next!!! -

and I speak as one who has all three of the above ! Ie cdrom, cd burns and mp3 but a hell of a large retail cd collection so post away! -
ethics? Nat Cole Box & MP3's
andybleaden replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Are we missing a thread or post here.....who rasied this in the first place. I have seen the Nat King Coles being made available on mp3 and they are in mono obvioulsy and ripped at about 90kps As for the ethics. If the law of law land where it is says it aint then it aint. There will always be issues with this across here in the EU as our copyright laws are different but they are our rules. As for these, they are still illegally being made available in certain quarters and therefore like make a cd burn are just the same. Whether you do that is the question. Downloadable mp3 or cd roms or cd burns are theft but this will not be the first example or the last ( I hope ) Andy (anyway has this thread been edited then?) -

andybleaden replied to l p's topic in Offering and Looking For...
and the back I have to say what a fantastic little site in all ....I am off to have a browse around Anyway I have the following on two BGP cds from the LP (not all grant green though) A-1 You Are The Sunshine Of My Life A-3 Until It's Time For You To Go B-1 Pain C-1 Easy Walker C-2 Kittitian Carnival D-2 Medley: Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do - Don't Go Strangers D-3 Crazy Legs and Lester leaps in which strangely enough does nto appear on the listings as it was an unissued and yet brilliant track from the session which features Grant Green Enjoy -

Bit more info re this session from a great little japanese website http://microgroove.jp/archives/2005/03/the_real_thing_1.html I have lifted the stuff below : alking about the musical contents - all tracks are what the Soul Jazz or Funk Jazz should be. The leader Houston Person plays very dirty, mellow and soulful tenor sax, while the amazing drummer Idris Muhammad doing the funky funky stuffs. Luckily, Idris Muhammad's awesome drumming is featured on five out of six tracks which features Grant Green on guitar (on the rest track “Since I Fell For You”, Hank Brown replaces Muhammad - I feel Hank's drumming sounds rather steady, though). Comparing individual characteristics among three different organists (Jimmy Watson, Sonny Phillips and Jack McDuff) is also interesting. Anyway, this double LP is highly recommended for anyone who like Souly and Funky Jazz music of the late 1960s - early 1970s. A-1 You Are The Sunshine Of My Life A-2 Since I Fell For You A-3 Until It's Time For You To Go B-1 Pain B-2 Angel Eyes C-1 Easy Walker C-2 Kittitian Carnival C-3 Could It Be I'm Falling In Love D-1 Where Is The Love? D-2 Medley: Tain't Nobody's Business If I Do - Don't Go Strangers D-3 Crazy Legs Marcus Belgrave (tp on B-1, C-2, C-3, D-3), Donald Townes (tp on C-2), Eli Fountain (as on C-2), Houston Person (ts on all tracks), Wild Bill Moore (ts on C-2), Jimmy Watson (org on A-1, A-2, D-1, D-2), Sonny Phillips (org on A-3, B-1, C-1, C-2, C-3, D-3), Brother Jack McDuff (org on B-2), Grant Green (g on A-2, B-1, B-2, C-1, C-3, D-3), Robert Lowe (g on A-1, A-3, B-1, C-2, C-3, D-2, D-3), James Jamieson (b on B-1, C-3, D-3), Hank Brown (ds on A-1, A-2, A-3, C-2, D-1, D-2), Idris Muhammad (ds on B-1, B-2, C-1, C-3, D-3), Buddy Caldwell (conga/tambourine on A-1, B-1, C-2, C-3, D-1, D-2), Etta Jones (vo on D-2), Spanky Wilson (vo on A-3). Recorded at the Watts Club Mozambique, Detroit, MI on March 14-15, 1973. Produced by Bob Porter for Eastbound Records, Inc. Engineers: Chuck Buchanan, assisted by Marty Jakubowski. Remix Engineer: Rudy Van Gelder. Mastering: Howard Craft. This is the lp art for it -

Is this the set that came part out on a BGP sampler a while ago with jack mcduff too?...I have some of these tracks..give me a shout via pm to check details It was a live set that I have at Watts Club ( a little too like the unissued Blue note set) and had a least two if not three of the tracks on...kick some ass too if I remember right I had two sampler ..one of East bound artist and one specific Houston one Andy -
I have to second that. I had the orginal LP mosaic set but sold it with regret when swapping over. However the Blue Note box is very good. I remember doing a talk about Herbie Nichols at the Manchester Jazz Society and photocopying the book...should have kept it I guess. Never mind. These sets ( like the Tina Brooks and I would say the Larry Young and Andrew Hill ) were real shining stars for Mosaic. A little like the recent Andrew Hill mosaic select. A triumph of music and art over the bean counters

Is this really necessary ? Have we not been through this? What is the point? Why do you write this? Why the bad language? All questions I fail to understand , I really do. Give us a break please and spare us from another frankly quite boring episode of insult tennis I am away from this for a week or so and look forward to some fresh stuff when I return because quite franky this is getting boring and tedious

I must admit I feel rather uncomfortable reading this and it reminds me of what children get up to in school when they start ignoring people, sending them to 'coventry',forming special groups, picking on the fat kid and all that other bull There have been several posters I disagree with, some (very few!) who annoy the hell out of me and maybe one or two I always just scroll past ...so what is the big problem. Gee after all that nonsense last week or so with Aric and then the threats and the 'i'm taking my ball home' stuff I do have to wonder about the attitude I read about. Get a life, llisten to more jazz and chill Really
