  1. Tinker Tailor is one of the best things I've ever seen. I saw it when it first came out and proceeded to read all the books. I own the DVD and easily watch it once a year. It's faithful to the book, which I've read a few times. If you enjoy it, you must get Smiley's People, which is also outstanding. The series with Alec Guiness (who is Smiley) were the ones that LeCarre was happiest with. I didn't think the film version of Tinker Tailor was all that good; a big handicap was trying to tell the story in two hours plus it suffered in comparison to the TV series. It couldn't fill those shoes.
  2. I liked both Branagh and Henriksson and although I've only read a couple of the books, I think the Branagh version may have closer to the books. Both were produced by the same Swedish production company.
  3. I'm not sure I follow that logic. Kudos to him and his agent for getting all they could because careers are short. However, to say he earned it. No, he didn't. The Rangers won't lose out either I'm sure as they, in all likelihood, have an insurance policy on him. Of course, they may have to pay higher premiums on future insurance policies.
  4. I read several of his books years ago. Nowadays, I don't have that much interest in reading him. I think his abrasive personality now colors my views of him.
  5. I think Boras represents Harper and he's talked in the past how he was a Yankee fan when he was a kid so color him in pinstripes. Yankees would have no trouble with $750 M.
  6. The Big Short. Loved it. A great movie. Does a terrific job of explaining the mortgage meltdown.
  7. Almost done with Grand Hotel by Vicki Baum.
  8. I probably have a lot of this but I'm interested and i did buy the Dial set so I'm likely to buy this one too. Like others I want to see the list.
  9. I haven't listened to it in years but may be worth another listen with all this talk. Idle Moments in non pareil but Feeling the Spirit is very good.
  10. That sounds about right. Somehow it's coming back to me that it was a seven rounder but couldn't swear to it.
  11. NYRB sent me the book when I renewed my book club membership but haven't read it yet.
  12. He was The Greatest but he stayed on too long and this cost him. I'm sorry he died but maybe he was better off; the Ali we knew wasn't here any more. I was fortunate to see him fight in person. I think it was against Jimmy Ellis but I wouldn't swear to it. It was back in the 70s at the Capital Center in Landover, Maryland. It was a night I will never forget. The people at the fight were as much as part of the story as the fight itself. Some real characters, all languages spoken and tons of limos. Obviously, Ali won but which round? Couldn't tell you RIP Champ, the King of Kings.
  13. Probably get it on eBay. Resale value on Mosaic sets has fallen through the floor.
  14. I'm going to pass. I don't think the recent Strings CD added much, at least for me, and I was quite content with the prior one. I will probably sell the recent Strings one.
  15. Not a good night for me. Went to about 11 but woke up at 1. Had a "discussion" with my son and couldn't fall asleep after that until 3. Then he woke me up at 430 -- great! Managed to fall asleep after that though. Not a good night for me. Went to about 11 but woke up at 1. Had a "discussion" with my son and couldn't fall asleep after that until 3. 16. This is funny considering how they've been pounding it lately.
  17. I think Bayern will flourish under him, not that they've done badly under Guardiola. They just couldn't win the Champions League. The final will be tough. Athletico always finds a way to beat RM.
  18. Just finished this. It's a superb book, a memoir by a young American, Eleanor Perenyi, in the 1930s who falls in love with a poor Hungarian Baron and they move to the old family estate in what is now, as a result of the break up of Austria-Hungary, Czechoslovakia. She settles into a rural life and her description of the people and the surrounding Ruthenian region are wonderful; you feel you're sharing it with her. Eventually that life is shattered by WW II and she has to leave, never to return to Hungary. Another winner from NYRB Classics.
  19. After not having it for awhile, insomnia seems to be back. Getting some sleep but not enough. May try some Melatonin tonight.
  20. Matz got lit up like a Christmas tree last night. Offense is worst in majors. Team needs to wake up.
  21. Lil Darling on Wes Montgomery's One Night in Indy CD. A fantastic interpretation.
  22. Mets hitting woes have carried over from spring training.
  23. Currently out of stock.
  24. The Disques Vogue box is tremendous. Can't believe someone hasn't taken it at that price.
