  1. With an hour to live, I'm with Lon, music is the last thing I'll be thinking about. I'll probably be running around screaming my bloody head off!
  2. I think for the oviously well informed like Chuck or Jim it may be a big yawn but for the rest of us, it's a good read. It also depends on your degree of knowledge. The more you know, the less likely you'll find it all that good.
  3. I agree! I saw it several weeks ago; very good! Same here fascinating. Even my wife loved it.
  4. It probably went oop because they exhausted all copies or they had reached the time limit. I'm on the opposite side of Sundog on this. I didn't like the set. Listened to it twice. Not just my thing. But I know people swear by it. Lon (jazzbo) is a good person to give an appraisal of the set.
  5. I hear what Chuck is saying but I have to side with Brownie on some of his points. Lonehill has been putting out material that I've never heard of. Both of what Chuck and Brownie are saying is the Best of the West which Michael C was going to put out I believe but Lonehill beat him to it so now he's not going to do it. If it's legal in Europe, why not? The answer would be to standardize the laws internationally but I doubt that's going to happen. I don't buy Definitive but I have no trouble buying Lonehill even though they're the same company. Fresh Sounds is bringing out things not otherwise available I believe and it sounds good to me. Unfortunately, as with most issues there's no right or wrong side on this issue.
  6. Why not just buy the Prestige box. I believe it's got everything there and you'd have it all in one place.
  7. I'm not seeing real recs here. Sounds like one to be avoided.
  8. Can't help here but when I was a kid, we lived in South America and the short wave was essential. I would always listen to the VOA and Willis' jazz show, with the A Train as the theme. Remember those times fondly.
  9. I found it very helpful and a good read. I didn't know enough at the time to say it was flawed so I'll defer to others on that point.
  10. I've only had positive experiences with them. When I received a damaged Dexter cd set last year and wrote to them about it, they asked that I return it with an explanation and a new one was on its way shortly thereafter.
  11. I can see it now: "Give me ipod or give me death!" or "You have nothing to lose but the ipod itself!"
  12. Thank God Allen has joined the Board and saved us. I'm sure Jim is eternally grateful
  13. That's OK--I'll just get Chris to send me an original autographed manuscript of his essay, and some of the priceless Basie memorabilia he must have buried in one of his famous closets. Too late. I heard he gave it to Phil Schaap
  14. You got the same email saying they're shipping my set??? Oh well, I guess with 8 discs, we can share it. Ron, They told me they're sending me two of your discs. The rest are going to Ed
  15. 15 years is not too old. Is it rare? I don't know, $30 maybe.
  16. I got this but I can't say it's primo Sonny. I'm not saying he's going through the motions but he's trotting out the old licks (which is what I guess he's good at) but there's no fire like there is on some of his later and last recordings.
  17. We should rename GOM Burrito Boy for bringing this up
  18. They've got some good stuff there in new arrivals, top of the list being George Coleman's Amsterdam After Dark, just a great cd. There's also an Art Pepper Tribute to Bird on a label called jazzbank that I never heard of. Little too expensive. They also have the complete Evans at the Vanguard, just a great set of cds. Expensive (Japan) but worth it.
  19. Yes, and of Monk fame too.
  20. This is a numbered set and whether it's limited or not is irrelevant (the LP version obviously wasn't). The reason that there are no music bites on the web site is obvious: the sound is not that good and the can only be appreciated by sustained listening. One little fragment will probably turn you off. This is a set worth picking up, minor criticisms aside. If you can't tolerate bad sound or are not a Parker disciple, then this set is not for you. But if you love Bird like I do, the set is a must. It seems that this thread or the idea for it gets trotted out on a pretty routine basis.
  21. I'll be playing some MJQ. My condolences to the Heath family. RIP and thanks.
  22. Why don't we split the state into two new states and call one Eastern Indiana and the other Western Indiana? The only hangup will be what state will they be talking about when you play "Back Home in Indiana."
  23. You guys need to get out more
  24. Recommended here also. Some like this better than the Mosaic.
  25. Not anything about these, but isn't this from an overly commercial period and quite different from his classic BN period. Reading all these comments, I'm probably on the fence about 'em now.
