I 'm of the belief that the first two shows were not actually Treasury Shows-- i.e not sponsored by the Treasury department until show 3. (Of course show 2-- the Roosevelt memorial show wouldn't have had commercials anyway.)

Has that version of Harlem ever been officially released on cd? I've got it on Chronological Classics but it's not even on the supposed "Complete Ellington 1947-52".

Is one Lp mono and one stereo and they have some different takes? I have a vague memory of that.

There's a"Jazz Beat" release called "The Complete Ellington Indigos" with 19 tracks including several alternates, "The Sky Fell Down" and "Love (My Heart, My Mind My Everything"). IIRC the original Lp release had an abbreviated version of Autumn Leaves minus the part sung in French.

I'm presuming these are 12" records, but I don't see where the say this in their advertising. I'm tempted to buy it but I don't have a very good turntable and I already own 3 cd versions of "Ellington Indigos". (I got it from the Columbia Record Club when it was new and it was the first of the 100s of Ellington releases I've bought since.)

I just read about this. It's a two 12inch Lps to be played at 45rpm. Is this a thing now? (Makes sense, I guess.)

I'm 81 and still adding a bit to my collection. My wife (who's only 70) and I have begun trying to catalogue our things for our children (who don't want any of them) as to sentimental and monetary value. I guess I'd tell them to truck Cds (and the few Lps I still have) to Amoeba.

Yes! The Ellington and Goodman estates have been especially difficult to deal with and in the case of Goodman it's meant that some great Prez is not being issued because Goodman is on the cuts. In fact a large percentage of the collection is devoted to Goodman whose estate is keeping it from being heard.

Really interesting. I realize that these are asking prices not necessarily what you can get but the priciest ones seem to be Lps even when there are cd equivalents readily available. I'm surprised the Bird box isn't higher up-- I don't think most of these cuts can be found elsewhere. And would my Neidlinger/Taylor signed by Buell be worth even more?

Is it in stereo?

Ooops, I was wrong about the Complete Columbia box set. Though the notes claim it's the original mono it's actually the stereo version of the whole set. I guess you can only get the "correct" version on the original Lp or the Ralph Ellison cd.

I forget (if I ever knew) the details of the stereo verses mono versions of the Ellington/ Strayhorn "Such Sweet Thunder". I remember that the stereo version of "Up and Down.." doesn't have Clark Terry quoting "Oh what fools these mortals be.." at the end, but are all (or any) of the other tracks also different? BTW The mono version of “Up and Down” can be found on the cd entitled “Ralph Ellison, a Life in Music” as well as the box set “The Complete Columbia Studio Albums Collection 1951-1958” which has the mono version of SST as well as a couple of stereo masters of other songs and other recordings from the period.
