  1. I think '76 was when saw a Steve Reich concert and a Cecil Taylor concert on the same day. (Might have been '77 when I also saw Elvis Costello in Edinburgh.)
  2. I met Chris once a few years ago and IIRC he was planning something like this. He was worried about what would happen after he died. Glad he got his wish.

    Jimmy Raney

Is Raney always in the right channel on this record?
  4. I enjoyed the film and much to my surprise there were about 20 people in the audience for an afternoon showing. (I thought I'd have the theater to myself.) Much of it is unbelievable of course but then Miles' being beaten by a police man in front of the Vanguard would seem equally unbelievable to anyone who didn't know it actually happened. And if Miles had lived long enough he probably would have hired Esperanza Spalding and Gary Clarke Jr.
  5. The edition I have of the first Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake record has some bonus live tracks including a nice version of Ornette's Lonely Woman. BTW as well as the Horace Silver song with the same title IIRC there is a Benny Carter song with that same title.

    Prince is dead

The Prince of Darkness meets Prince: http://vk.com/video73062340_168193145 and https://www.mixcloud.com/Kierienos/prince-miles-davis-can-i-play-with-u/
  7. Now there's an Ellington release: https://www.offbeat.com/news/incredibly-clear-duke-ellington-recording-surfaces-online/ And can someone combine this thread with the one Berigan started about metal masters?
  8. Now there's an Ellington: https://www.offbeat.com/news/incredibly-clear-duke-ellington-recording-surfaces-online/ And how do we combine this thread with the one under "audio".
  9. Definitely preordered this one, though this will be at least the third time for me for the Basie Deccas on cd. I think this is the first time Mosaic has managed to combine Universal-owned and Sony-owned recordings in one set, isn't it? So, if I have the other Mosaic set, the Complete Savoy set and the Complete Verve set, will this pretty well complete Prez's studio recordings? I'm not counting the live things. gregmo Hey, that was at least a week ago. Who can remember?
  10. I forgot about Arcadia. Yes It is a wonderful play.
  11. I saw this in New York, then read the play. They left out one line near the end: the one where someone talks abut cutting off the heads of the colonialists. I loved this play but I feel that way about pretty well all Stoppard. (I think Travesties is my favorite.)
  12. No, and why don't they? Obviously I'm not the only one who wasn't sure. If it weren't for this discussion I'd still be wondering
  13. Savoy material and of course the studio sessions with Lady Day.
  14. http://www.offbeat.com/news/crystal-clear-louis-armstrong-recording-surfaces/ Any comments?
  15. I doubt if it is, but nothing says it's not. Just in case I ordered it because I can't wait.
  16. I was there. See above. Though I suppose they may have done it more than once.
  17. Probably because he didn't want to share royalties with Miles.
  18. I saw that Mingus band twice in Toronto: Once doing a benefit for Ed Blackwell and once at a rock club: The El Mocambo. Both times Adams did the spinning around bit while he soloed. I thought it was corny and terrific at the same time. At the El Mo they actually played Happy Birthday for someone. According to Bill Smith, Mingus chased him around the club yelling that Bill was trying to steal his piano player because Bill and John Norris were recording Pullen for Sackville-- a a recording session I was lucky enough to attend.
  19. It wasn't that poorly distributed. I had no trouble finding it in Toronto. This thread includes a discussion of the Verve album with the "sketches".
  20. Yes I have to check myself when I'm about to say "post-war" since younger people now ask me "which war?". Of course that's now also true when I say "turn of the century". I'v taught myself to say "turn of the 20th Century". And what used to be called "modern" in terms of art and architecture is now called "mid-century".

  22. I think I agree. Seems to me that the great divide in the culture was pre and post Vietnam. I'm old enough to remember lifer pre and young enough to have enjoyed the fruits of the change. My kids live in a slightly different culture than mine but I lived in a radically different culture than my parents.
  23. Do you mind if I forward this to Tom McDermott? (Or have you already told him how much you liked his playing?)
