  1. There are some guys who have done/are doing some interesting things with electronics and trumpet- Cuong Vu, Erik Truffaz, Randy Brecker and of course Don Ellis, to name a few. Those guys can play the horn and aren't using electronics to hide crappy brass technique (like this guy). You can tell when he plays with the open horn sound that he's a weak brass player. That's all I need to know, for me that negates any preaching he wants to do. Pass.
  2. Wow, that is interesting. I did not know that.
  3. I believe it's his son Rene.
  4. A classy man and a great musician. Sad to see all the Jones brothers are gone now. RIP Hank.
  5. Anyone ever hide stuff in another section so you could come back later for it? I will admit to having done that a few times back in the day. My favorite hiding place was in smooth jazz- it would always be there when I'd return.
  6. Wow, that exact thing happened to me in college. But I digress....
  7. I will admit I do enjoy it. Although in an attempt to outdo himself each season, he will probably die soon.
  8. I'm thinking about who it would be cool to have as guests. How about a reunion of the 1964 Now's The Time band- Herbie, Ron Carter and Roy McCurdy? Lots of possibilities for guests.....hmmm.......
  9. Sounds like it will be a great night! I'll be curious to hear who the "guests" are.
  10. Frau Blucher! *whinny*
  11. I've really enjoyed participating on FB. I've hooked up with folks from the distant past (and as Moose said, that's about all the contact I need). I've never had any of the problems Chris is talking about- I was instructed by a friend how to do the preference settings when I joined (which basically consisted of unchecking everything but a couple options). I can't help but wonder if this is the source of Chris' problems. I don't share anything too personal or inappropriate for many reasons, not the least of which is that many of my students are there. I consider it a very public place so I keep things very general. So, all things considered, my experience has been very positive.
  12. A beautiful, talented lady. RIP.
  13. Hope there's nothing in the helmet.
  14. In any walking swing feel it's critical that the quarter note bassline and the ride cymbal pattern hook up, and IMO Dunlop & Ore achieved that, which created a solid swinging foundation for Monk's explorations.
  15. Great news! Congrats! Great to see my friend from Austin Suzi Stern get some attention. She is a talented vocalist.
  16. Wow, heartbreaking loss for the Jazz tonight.
  17. Very cool video. Thanks for posting it. It makes me happy, nostalgic and sad all at once. (sad because of the demise of so many great vinyl stores that I used to spend so many hours in)
  18. Saw it today. It was fun eye candy, but I thought the script was pretty weak. Not really sure what the point of Scarlett J.'s character was. Mickey Rourke was about the most engaging presence on the screen. I hope they can do better next time. If you do go to see it, make sure to stay for a bonus scene after the credits- a hint of what is to come.....
  19. I bow to your superiority! Yeah, I'm probably going to hell anyway, so WTF.
  20. Let this be a lesson- be careful when you cross, lest you get nailed.
  21. Some good candidates, although I always think the question should read "of the choices given", and I'd likely pick one of the given choices, although we mustn't forget: Harry Carney Lars Gullin Cecil Payne Joe Temperley Hamiett Bluiett Gary Smulyan Scott Robinson Nick Brignola ....and of course, our very own Duke City (Glenn Kostur). He laid down a few choruses at a concert we did two weeks ago that were truly burning.
