  1. Then the Tom Lord discography adds an unissued Jam Session date: Harry Edison, tp, Lester Young, Ben Webster, ts, Oscar Peterson, p, Herb Ellis, g, Ray Brown, b, Louis Bellson, dr, Jimmy Rushing, voc. LA, August 22, 1957. - Goin' to Chicago (Rushing, voc) - Someone to Watch Over Me Hope will see that included in the box. Sounds like reason enough to buy the set just for this...
  2. 'Grass Roots' is a straight-forward jazz date. And a very good one! A rare occasion to enjoy the sadly under-recorded Harold Ousley! And with nice early Bobby Hutcherson to boot! Not aware that Grassella Oliphant recorded for Prestige under his name.
  3. I will have to check on those Mooney Hep releases. I got a couple of Joe Mooney albums after reading what Gunther Schuller wrote about him in 'The Swing Area' and was somehow disappointed with the two. They are the 'Lush Life' album on Atlantic (have the Koch CD reissue) and the Columbia LP 'The Greatness of Joe Mooney' and Jim's description of this kind of music as kinda 'loungey' is accurate - as usual - as far as I am concerned. Nice to listen to but that's not the music I go back to...

    Albert Ayler

Last I heard from the Revenant box people was that they were going on with selecting photos for the liner notes and that the photo selection was to be completed sometime this month. Seems to me that things are going on. Will check with them...
  5. Same here. Could not get aboard most of the times.
  6. The Cellar Door box is the only one I will buy as soon as it hits the shops! I'll be right behind you
  7. I voted for 'Night Dreamer'. Still my favorite Shorter. But I must say I don't play the Wayne Shorter albums that much lately. Much prefer hearing him when he was blowing with the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers or with the Miles Davis quintet. That's the Shorter I love!
  8. Now you've ruined my day Had not noticed yet my copy of the 'In a Silent Way' box had no metal spine. I want my money back
  9. About time that Verve doid something about these jam sessions. They only dealt with the Charlie Parker material for the Bird Box. All of the great players from the Granz stable took part in those jams. I'll add in the names of Wardell Gray, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton to the list. Some superb music there.
  10. I have these on Spotlite LPs and can't help much. For CD details, you can have a look at this site: http://music.onino.co.uk/music-shrink/6749.html They seem to list all Spotlite CD releases including the Dial ones you're looking for!
  11. Satchmo to Benny Goodman (A Song Is Born) Benny Goodman to Henry Grimes Henry Grimes to Pharoah Sanders Now how about Satchmo to Albert Ayler in 3 (via a different route from Satchmo/Pharoah)?
  12. Volume 1 of The Jazz Messengers at Cafe Bohemia. I have the Lexington version of this album and it must have played thousands of times. Still get kicks from listening to the LP. I also have the RVG of this but the sound of that vinyl is how I discovered that music and this is how it should sound to my ears.
  13. And let's not forget Tricky Sam Nanton!

    Julius Hemphill

'Dogon A.D.' is an early Hemphill favorite. Fail to understand why it was not reissued on CD.
  15. Definitively not Barry Galbraith. He died in January 1983.
  16. Louis Armstrong 'The 1930-1932 Big Band Recordings' (JSP) Grant Green 'The Complete BN sides with Sonny Clark' (Mosaic)
  17. Baby Dodds
  18. If the CD of Sax of a Kind is worth more than $200, how much is the LP copy worth? Should I place my near mint copy in a bank safe? Along with my copy of the 'For the Time Being' CD? Know this was rich music but did not realise this was rich in the full sense of the word...
  19. Catesta. We non-americans don't take bullshit. The site is 'intended for access only from within the United States' says the welcome page we get here.
  20. This Board is (very) good enough for me! I don't have the time - nor the will - to post elsewhere.
  21. A very happy birthday to you And the best of health...
  22. Quite an amazing site. Thanks Daniel for bringing it to our attention!
  23. Voted for Walt Dickerson. Over Bags (THE bop era vibraphone player) and Hutcherson, two favorites. But Dickerson produced a batch of innovative albums in the sixties that placed him in a category of his own. And he has kept releasing non spectacular but highly individual and intense albums that make him one of the most authentic creator of music. And also one of the most underrated...
