  1. I'm lovin' everybody but the drummer is really knocking me out.
  2. Yanks are looking up at two other wild card contenders, and no one has an easier schedule the rest of the way than the Indians. The odds do NOT favor the Yanks at this point, though the deficit is certainly small enough that they could pull it off, or at least find themselves in a tie-breaker game.
  3. Would sidemen have veto power anyway? Its one thing to call it a boot but its a little late to say a release like this is boosting any careers.
  4. Thanks Marcello; I've only known the latter version, from the Louis/Ella recording.
  5. I guess you've never heard the volume of Swiss Nights where he sings "Jelly Jelly".
  6. Unless your theory is purely addition by subtraction, I think that's premature. There's plenty of time for thank you cards in the coming season(s) when the prospects they picked up actually contribute. Credit should go to Cherrington for some pretty shrewd use (to date) of the salary that was freed up though. Meantime with Ellsbury in a walking boot and possibly out with a broken foot, I do worry that this is their high water mark. I guess the Jackie Bradley era starts early in Boston. Come to think of it, a young, highly touted centerfielder was called up at the end of the 2007 season, became a starter and helped bring a championship home, so maybe Bradley can do the same.
  7. Not to defend the indefensible but I have to wonder if its the track that was used that is triggering Branford's dumbass comment. I mean, I know that he's making a blanket statement that Fathead isn't a jazz musician but I have to wonder the response if he had been played a track from the Lee Morgan-Fathead Blue Note session, or just about anything from his Highnote output. Maybe it would have been 'that's Fathead? I didn't think he had any jazz chops." Which is an equally ignorant statement but perhaps not as egregious as 'not a jazz musician."
  8. Late to the party but glad it was a nice
  9. Daniel Bard claimed off waivers by the Cubs. I don't think even Steve Blass had it that bad. If Theo thinks they can fix him, good luck.
  10. Color me very curious, especially well recorded Bud with a couple of very solid second-generation boppers.
  11. And Pittsburgh has ended the streak of sub-.500 seasons and may even win the division. With their history of futility I gotta be rooting for them in October if they make it. And thanks to the Rays recent struggles the Sox have an excellent chance to go worst-to-first which would be pretty darn impressive. Now they just need to avoid losing streaks of any length and they can run out the clock. I'm still not sure they are well situated to compete against the A's/Rangers/Tigers but whatever happens in October is gravy after coming in last in 2012. And I gotta take note of how the schedule may help the Yankees slip into the playoffs. They are 2.5 behind the Rays right now, and they finish the season with three at the appalling Blue Jays, three hosting the appalling defending champions, three hosting the Rays, and three at the worst of the worst, the Astros. The Rays? They finish with Texas, Baltimore, the Yanks and Blue Jays. Three potential playoff teams. Yanks couldn't ask for a better schedule.
  12. Jolene sounds like a bitch, and so does the record. In a good way.
  13. This does remind me of the classic WKRP In Cincinnati episode in which the station promotes an appearance by "The Scum of The Earth"
  14. For a Classic Motown Song About Money, Credit Is What He Wants and here's the, pardon the expression, money quote: Read the rest to find out why Gordy took Barrett Strong off the copyright. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/01/arts/music/for-a-classic-motown-song-about-money-credit-is-what-he-wants.html?pagewanted=2&hp&pagewanted=all I understand why Strong is basically fucked over by the law, but I wonder if he has an actionable claim against Gordy for conspiring to damage him financially by falsely asserting, and filing false documents, claiming a clerical error in the first copyright filing. I mean, Strong can certainly prove that the music was his from the start. The again, what's the point, because Strong couldn't fight it out in court when he's got no, um, money. Berry Gordy is a scumbag though.
  15. I love Ben but even ten years ago I am not sure I'd put this at the top of my list to buy. Today, I'm perfectly happy with all of the other live recordings I have of Ben in Europe playing these exact same tunes.
  16. Dorn released a lot of Left Bank stuff on 32jazz. Overall, I found it very disappointing. I long for a CD release of Gary Bartz's "Home" on Milestone. That was a hot Left Bank recording. True but no unreleased Hank or Lee or any of the other shows that are listed in the annals that get everybody excited.
  17. I just want to hear the stage announcement. "Ladies and gentlemen, Shit ... Piss ... N' VOMIT!"
  18. The possibility that Uptown has gotten in its hands on other Left Bank tapes is almost more exciting than this particular release, which I will definitely snatch very soon. I remember when Joel Dorn was supposed to have some group of Left Bank tapes ... and then he died and no one knew what happened to them or if he really had them or not. Too bad Sunneblick seems to play things pretty close to the vest, we may just have to wait and wonder.
  19. I don't know Tom I think the CD I have/had said Fontana. I'd grab whatever copy you find.
  20. The basic concept: Spy gets a 'burn notice' AKA a termination notice. While taking up odd jobs uniquely suited to his spy skills, the burned spy has been trying to find out who burned him and why, and to get his old life back, ever since. Think the Mission Impossible TV series, or perhaps Wild, Wild West, again the series not the awful movie. You definitely have to check your brain at the door as the contrivances of Michael Westen getting into and out of danger can be fairly ridiculous. But there is plenty of action and a good dose of comedy too. A fun fact is that the original pitch had the same concept set in a city in New Jersey (not Atlantic City) and the network bought it only on condition that it be set in Miami and the creator agreed. Can't imagine the same show in some decrepit northeast city. The fact that there are extras dressed in bikinis hardly makes it a T&A show; they are used to set the scene but the camera never lingers on them, except on transitional/scene-setting pans. Jim, you should stream an episode or two or try to catch some earlier shows in syndication. Its a fun way to kill an hour.
  21. Thanks. If this won't bring Albertson out of hiding, nothing will.

    Ralph Moore

Justin, I have to recommend this one for you: Native Colours - One World (Concord) IIRC, Ralph plays more soprano than on almost any leader date. Its also a bit more edgy/post-hard bop, at least on several of the originals. Amazon has multiple cheap copies.
  23. My wife and I have really enjoyed this show since its inception, even though I suspect that 90% of what Michael Westen says about the spy game in his voice-overs is bullshit. Fun, escapist entertainment with a lead actor who is very talented and has great screen charisma. He showed what he can do on some episodes of Law & Order and has really excelled in this role. And my wife loves the guy who plays Sam, ever since The Evil Dead. Anyone else watching? Only two episodes left.
