Mulgrew Miller has a pretty extensive discography as leader of a trio and its hard to discriminate among them as "best" but in terms of being in print or probably easier to acquire, the Landmark recordings are probably tough to find but you should look into his MaxJazz recordings which I assume are easier to find. There are four volumes of two different live trio recordings. For a mix of young and old, you might look into his Hand in Hand recording for Novus. Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson and Kenny Garrett make up the front line (only Garrett is on all tracks), with Steve Nelson on vibes, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash are the rest of the rhythm section. This one is a real nice date IMHO.

The unwritten baseball code. The money quote:

Ellington was the perfect band, pizza is widely recognized as the perfect food (due to its inclusion of all major food groups).

So far, Tim McCarver, Tom Seaver and Jim Kaat have all said that what A-Rod did was unquestionably wrong. They have also mentioned that Pete Rose would try the same thing, and pitchers like Gibson would throw at his head to make sure he got the message. A-Rod is a contemptible POS, and I hope the A's drill him the next time they face each other.

Baseball Steroid Thread
Dan Gould replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Interesting, though not earth-shattering, news about the Clemens grand jury: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2010/04/23/2010-04-23_rockets_bloody_mess.html The news here is pretty clear: They must have found, and presented to the grand jury, DNA evidence linking Clemens to PEDs through the medical waste McNamee turned over. Otherwise why would they present secondary evidence about the legitimacy of the medical waste if the medical waste didn't show Clemens to have used steroids and HGH? Its a slow process, and we still have no idea if they tracked down a source for the PEDs (will Canseco 'fess up? He's scheduled to go before the grand jury early in May). But its clear to me that they are going to get their indictment, and if Clemens takes it to trial, all the ugliness is going to come out. And win or lose, there goes the HoF, because the evidence will be sufficient for enough voters to lump him in with McGuire. And I really don't buy the "he was a Hall of Famer before the 'roids" claim. Two Cy Youngs, 192 wins and only 39 in the previous four years. Then 'roids, his fastball got its giddyup back, and he wins three more Cy Youngs and goes well over 300 wins. If he continues in a normal progession from age 34, Clemens is Schilling without the post-season resume. Borderline at best. -

When Your Girlfriend Pillow Walks Out On You ...
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Or their market research indicated little demand for man-boobs. Seriously though, are there secondary sex characteristics for men? Women have breast and hip development, what do men have? Bigger adam's apples? What I don't get is the rubber glove on the hand. Is this part of the Japanese fascination with Michael Jackson? Why is she going to bed without taking off the dish-washing gloves? -
I'm really hoping she can be booked into the new B.B. King club in West Palm Beach, otherwise I'm SOL.

I am no longer an eBay virgin.
Dan Gould replied to GA Russell's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Anyone who is seriously interested in an item will follow it to the conclusion of the auction. In fact, if the day and time an auction ends is important, then by the same token, "in the know" buyers should be motivated to follow 10 day auctions in hopes of getting a "bargain". I can't imagine how three day auctions can be successful except in the limited situation of selling something like a Mosaic set that has a built-in audience of regulars searchers/buyers. And even then, why limit the time that individuals may find your listing? I don't know what ebay usage patterns show but I have to believe that there are more users who visit occasionally than go on the site and do their favorite searches every single day. Getting a couple of people to battle it out over three days doesn't mean that more people wouldn't have seen the auction and bid it up in a standard seven day auction. Which brings up the final point: All of this has to do with luck and timing. A three day auction may work because you caught the eye of two Japanese buyers who throw money at something with reckless abandon. A ten day auction could work because the right person comes along on the eighth or tenth day and bids it sky-high. You simply never know. -

Dan Gould replied to GA Russell's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Not necessarily. I have never used the "watch" option, I simply print out the listing I am interested in and highlight the day and time the auction ends. Then when I want to check the status of the bidding I enter the item number in my browser search box. Almost as fast as bookmarking the page and definitely faster than going to ebay, logging in and going to your My Ebay page. Also, I was selling some plumbing stuff for my sister-in-law and noticed that a couple of items sat for a couple of weeks with two people "watching" it, then all of a sudden everything went at my Buy-it-Now price. I think its more important to note how many eyeballs hit your listings and you get that info now at the top of the page. But I'm sure Mosaic listings get plenty of eyeballs. -

People who are interested in your item add it to their "watch" list in "My Ebay". Then they have an easy-to-find link to the auction - assuming they remember that they were interested in it in the first place. Y'know, if it goes too long, they forget. -
Album covers featuring people with the 80's porn actor look
Dan Gould replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, its hardly a porn thread since the prevalence of the "porn mustache" in the 70s only reflected the prevalence of mustaches in the general male population. But here's a little porn connection: Ron Jeremy, the hedgehog himself, and proud owner of a porn mustache, was an extra in Ghostbusters. That shot comes after the containment unit is shut off by dickless. http://protoncharging.com/gb/2005/04/11/new-gb-trivia-ron-jeremy-in-gb/ -
How many people would feel ripped off if a live Lee Morgan set was released and the bass was nowhere to be heard? How many people would snap such a release up if it showed up on that Andorran "Rare Live Recordings" label? I can understand the financial implication of releasing certain tapes being a huge hindrance but aside from massive over-saturation of the tape, I don't really see why audio quality should be that much of an impediment.

I'd almost wonder, if the intention was short performances, how long did Sonny go anyway? They wouldn't record ten minute takes, or very many of them, if they had enough for the concept of the album. Unless that concept really was imposed afterward.

Like Brad I didn't know this musician at all but after doing a little investigating on AMG I knew he'd be right up my alley and I will definitely get this from Chuck when its available.

Well at least that explains why I never became a Red Sox fan. Better than shameless front-running + longevity. I'd sure as hell have a lot more respect for the likes of you if you'd only say "I was eight, I started in little league, and I loved Mickey Mantle." But no, you were six and you liked the idea of rooting for a winner. You're beneath contempt.
-
Are you fucking kidding me? "Saw the light"? You were six years old and you saw a winner. Everybody loves to root for a winner, even more so at that age if you don't have familial ties to a team with a more benighted history. You are exactly the fan Queenan writes about, and longevity will never alter the reality of why you became a fan. Its too bad you were too young to understand what "rooting for U.S. Steel" meant. And as for GoM, let's just say that I've often wondered what if he was studying the Plains Indians when he looked for a team? That would have been tough, finally having a good team and always going to the playoffs but only winning it all one time.

In other news, the sun is scheduled to set in the west later today, and Sarah Palin said something stupid. More in a minute.
