  1. Yes, formulaic in the sense that it has a sampling of a lot of the styles of music he's tried out in the past (it reminded me of Spike immediately). Not bad, just not nearly as interesting as Delivery Man, River in Reverse or Secret, etc.
  2. It's fantastic! It's the best Costello I've heard since The Delivery Man (which is my favorite of all his albums), maybe even better than that. I love the instrumentation (acoustic country/folk/bluegrass) and some of his strongest songs in at least 15 years. My only problem with it is that one of the bonus songs on the vinyl is Femme Fatale, which just sounds out of place (I've never been a big fan of Lou Reed anyway). But after the rather formulaic Momofuku, it's great to hear him sound so different.
  3. I know Robbie Robertson worked with him but I'll still never understand the presence of Neil Diamond at that concert. Just so opposite of The Band's music and image.
  4. Ok, but is it defensible? I mean come on, can anyone really say this forum is being "taken over" by all these right-wing rednecks? You gotta be kidding me...
  5. Wow. This is now the most idiotic thing I have ever read on this forum. Amazing.
  6. could you see the snowball hanging from Neil Young's nose?
  7. What about it do you find interesting?
  8. I hope this is temporary. The two times I saw Organissimo were at the Firefly (in it's previous location on Ashley): http://www.annarbor.com/business-review/an...de-of-jazz-bar/
  9. What about Tribute to Lester, the most recent Art Ensemble of Chicago ECM?
  10. too bad he's such a nut. I really like his new record on ECM, Remembering Weather Report. Sounds vaguely the Weather Report that he was a part of, with more of a late 60s Miles influence.
  11. They seemed to have stopped the longbox reissues at the Jack Johnson box- so no Seven Steps, Cellar Door or On the Corner longboxes.
  12. I'm interested to see how it will be packaged. But who is going to buy this thing, really? Not casual fans, not the hardcore fans.
  13. Yes. Less now than it did a year ago, which actually was a pretty decent selection, considering what is currently available on LP.
  14. Wow. You're lucky. That experience is just so much better than what you would get from downloading.
  15. If I had any money I would be buying more (including your reissues, Chuck). I'm barely able to afford paying my bills right now. But, at least locally, there's not much available even if I could buy CDs, and that's with three Borders stores (which used to carry a lot of jazz beyond the usual basics).
  16. Liner notes are always a good thing. Why just ECM though? I'd appreciate them with all jazz releases.
  17. man is Fripp ever milking his past! He just put out 30th anniversary edition CDs of all of these 8-10 years ago. Now it's time to repackage them with surround sound? I've never understood the attraction of surround, so it looks like I'm passing on these.
  18. Exactly what I've always thought about that era. Actually, it strikes me as gimmicky.
  19. so, what have you learned? About the awesome-ness of the Monkees? The brilliance of latter-day Macca? How to turn every single thread into a discussion about the Beatles? There are some good things discussed at that forum but the amount of dreck is astounding.
  20. I still enjoy Jarrett but I can understand why you feel this way. If I had to put my finger on 'what's wrong' with Jarrett I would have to say that his trio format is stale. He needs to play with different musicians in a different setting. I'm not sure I'd use the word stale...there are still great beauties to be heard. It's just that you more or less know what to expect. Listening to the recent Jarrett catalogue is a bit like walking through a museum with gallery after gallery of wonderful porcelain. It eventually becomes 'Oh, another lovely vase!' I agree - it would be great to hear him with other musicians. Preferably some unknowns rather than a superstar session. Yes. Please, do something besides solo piano or the standards trio. All great, but time for a change. Or at the very least, do some more free stuff with the trio.
  21. Nope, only two. You're thinking Canterbury? That was only in the DVD and Blu-Ray set.
  22. I'm not willing to drop that much cash on something with such a minimal amount of unreleased music. The video portion does not interest me at all (I've watched my other music DVDs maybe once, some not all the way through even once). Maybe if the next volume has more unreleased music I'd go for it.
  23. I agree. And don't even get me started on Conan. I just don't understand his appeal AT ALL. These kids and their comedians..
  24. I always hated Paul Simon....
