Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Tom 1960 replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This Mosaic has lived up to all the hype and I'm truely grateful for those who told me to take the plunge. Right now disc 4 & 5 with help from Booker Ervin, Grant Green and Johnny Coles. -
Lee Morgan Bio and others

I had this book in my hands yesterday at a local brick and mortar, but hesitated to make the purchase pending what the vibe here was on the book. Looks like I'll make a return visit tonight and hopefully it's still there. -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Tom 1960 replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Disc #3 I'm really enjoying this set. The 3'rd disc features excellent playing by both Stanley and Tommy Turrentine. Tommy is someone I've mentioned in another thread on this board whom I'm really getting into. To have him on this set is just icing on the cake. On the track 'Rastus', Tommy really shines. Also the fact that I have little of Stanley playing in my collection has served as a good intro to his music. -
'Treasures' sounds like a serious endorsement. I'm trying to behave for now since I've made quite a number of purchases recently. It's just after reading all your glowing endorsements, you make it really difficult to for me to sit on the sidelines. Well, I'll do my best to resist the temptation for now, but will keep this high on the list for my next round of purchases. Continue to add your thoughts if you like and again thanks.

Has anyone else purchased this recently and wish to add there thoughts? I'm thinking about it, but after purchasing the Parlan Mosaic, it will be awhile.

Just wanted to say thanks fellas, for recommending this one. Beautifully packaged. It'll take some time to get through the entire collection, but so far this is really nice stuff. Listening to the trio sessions right now.

No upgrades here. Presently, I'm just trying to fill the gaps in my collection and yourmusic gives me great opportunities to do so. Of all the artists mentioned, only Duke Pearson doesn't have a place in my collection. Maybe that helps?

Ok, let me have alittle fun here. Of the 10 selections in my queue at present, including the above mentioned what would you choose as your next selection? Art Blakey Indestructible (Remastered) Miles Davis Filles De Kilimanjaro (Remastered) Roy Hargrove Nothing Serious Horace Silver Horace Silver And The Jazz Messengers (Remastered) Duke Pearson Sweet Honey Bee Lee Morgan Tom Cat (Remastered) Max Roach Jazz In 3/4 Time Ben Webster & Oscar Peterson Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson (Remastered)

No coincidence, MG. I know where to come when I'm looking for great recommendations and this forum doesn't disappoint. You guys convinced me enough to go ahead and make the purchase tonight. I should have it in my hands in the next few days. I'm really looking forward to hearing this excellent set. Hopefully this will spur my friend Ron S into making a purchase himself.

6.99 here as well. As I stated in a previous thread, I ordered 3 Arthur Rubinstein discs about a month ago. The week prior to Christmas, I received the order obviously opened with only 1 disc intact. Since I work for the post office I immediately returned the discs with an explanation and to reship the order. Still nothing. I emailed them last night and have yet to receive a response. Hopefully we can get this resolved soon! Interesting enough, two subsequent purchases have been thoroughly taped. Maybe these guys have been getting an earfull of complaints about missing discs? In the meantime, lined up in my queue for next month is Tina Brooks' "True Blue". I have been thinking of exchanging it with Sonny Rollins' "The Bridge". Any thoughts here?
-
I was given the headsup on this set since I don't already own any of Horace's releases. Having gone through and read the positive responses on this issue, I might just purchase this before the weekends out. It helps I'm working overtime tomorrow.
-
Thanks for the swift replies guys. I'll definitely look out for the self titled release. I'm not sure I can go along the Mosaic route, but your input is appreciated just the same. I'm probably more inclined to look up his session work as was recommended. Fickle Sonance? Duh, I already own that one! Sometimes I don't have a clue what I own.

I've been listening to Sonny Clark's 'Leapin' and Lopin' which features the fine trumpet work of Tommy Turrentine. I was wondering seeing he didn't lead too many sessions, are they other recordings where he's featured? I'd love to hear more of his stuff but have know idea where to look. Any help would be appreciated.

As I said in another thread I made 3 purchases before the price increase. Bobby Hutcherson - Happenings Donald Byrd - Off To The Races Freddie Hubbard - Here To Stay I'm still waiting on the 3 Arthur Rubinstein discs which were apperently opened(2 of 3 discs missing) when they arrived at the local post office I work at. I sent the order back before Christmas, but nothing yet.

How does your spouse react to your hobby/obsession?
Tom 1960 replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have to laugh at some of the commentary here. I certainly can relate. My wife threatens to have a garage sale and sell off my music collection. She doesn't even know about my vinyl collection I keep upstairs in the attic. -
I just purchased these 3 from Yourmusic.com before the price increase.

Always loved this album. One of my favorite songs from Quadrophenia is the underplayed "Sea and Sand". A great rockin' track.
-
I received my shipment a few days ago having ordered 3 discs, but only 1 disc was left in the packaging. Seems like the packaging split open or god forbid someone opened it and helped themselves to the other two. It was taped up with the one selection in tact. Since I work for the Post Office, I immediately sent the shipement back explaining the discs were missing and to reship the order. We'll have to see how long this takes before the new shipment arrives.

What Holiday Music Are You Spinninng Now
Tom 1960 replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
George Winston - December -
I placed Off To The Races/Byrd, Happenings/Hutcherson, Here To Stay/Hubbard and Demon's Dance/McLean in my queue over the weekend. Now comes the hard part. Do I take advantage and make the purchases now before the price increase next month? I've bought quite abit of music recently.
-
Without a doubt, this was the year of Jackie McLean for me. I purchased at least a half dozen of his Blue Note releases with more in store for the upcoming year. I've yet to pick up a dud.

Good luck, Jim. Avoid the temptation to rush things and please listen to what the doc's tell you.

I heard a pretty horrible version of Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer by Diana Ross and the Supremes earlier this week. I'd never heard there take on this one and hopefully I wont get another opportunity in this lifetime. "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses is somthing that should be jetisoned to the vortex also.

I placed an order for 5 discs on November 16 and they just arrived this past Saturday, December 2. Alittle slow, yes. But in the end, I paid just over $32. You can't complain too much.

Disc 1 Man, this really sounds great!
