I didn't catch up with this album until the issue of the Prestige twofer "Fire Waltz" in 1978. Over the years its had a regular if occasional spin. It's pretty much a delight from start to finish. Warm Canto is a lovely chamber piece, exactly like it's title but Warp and Woof is my favourite track, tasty and relaxed.
Dolphy and Ervin work well togther and there is some very nice playing from Waldron both in solo and accompanying. Persip is superb, just right for the date. Listening now I think that Ron Carter's solos are superfluous adding little to the date, out of place or perhaps just dated. The rest easily stands the test of time.
Another great choice for AOTW.
My copy of Boss Horn has a few seconds of distortion at the beginning. Is it just mine or are they all like that. Volume level seems a bit on the low side as well.
Oh dear! I dug my Signifyin' out and find my European issue is a compilation with twelve tracks taken from Signifyin', Possum Head, Cole Slaw, Rough House Blues, Musty Rusty and Blowing In The Wind. Although it hasn't much to do with the AOTW thread it's a very nice cd. No creativity but the blues licks are recycled nicely by a bunch of guys who know what they are doing. This cd would make a nice introduction to LD.
Mike, don't think it's a compilation. The following is from Lord.
Al Aarons(t) Grover Mitchell(tb) Collette(as, ts, flt) Al Viola(g) Leroy Vinnegar(bass) Red Callender(tu) Frank Severino(d)
Fun City/ Safari west/Shatara
Red Callender(bass) and Frank Chavez (d) replace Vinnegar and Severino
Veda/J. power buzzard/Now and then/Andre
Recording details are N. Hollywood 1973.
Exciting, I remember it well. Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, Cecil Taylor, Coltrane Mingus, Impulse, ESP, what a time. The only problem was I was underpaid and I couldn't afford all those discs.
Dave Brubeck; Stardust
Gerry Hemingway; Devil's Paradise
Thelonious Monk; Complete on Riverside- (up to disc 9 now)
Roy Haynes; Love Letters
Miles Davis; Blackhawk disc 1
Billy Bang; Valve No 10
Benny Green; Blue Notes
Blue Mitchell; Boss Horn
A friend came across this curiosity recently on Collectables COL 5793 from Charlie Parker Records. A poor sounding live (amateur?) recording. No lineup given apart from Kelly and Payne, trumpet, bass and drums are unlisted. Titles are (actual tunes in brackets).
1. Cecil's Back Home (Indiana)
2. Outa My Head For You (You Go To My Head)
3. Confirmation
4. Kelly's Rhythm (Night In Tunisia)
5. Sounds Of Souls (Brief spoken track)
6. 52nd St Theme (familar but can't put a name to it)
7. Keys Of Kelly (Crazy Rhythm)
8. Layin' Down Cecil (Body And Soul/52nd St Theme)
Any information welcome. Thanks in advance.
The individual Candid reissue cds are supposedly still available in the UK. You could try emailing Alan Bates at alanbates@candidrecords.com to check availability.
Harley is on one track on Sonny Rollins' Cutting Edge done Live at Montreux. I saw the band live at Ronnie Scott's. The bagpipe drone was something different.
The early ZYX boxes came with full size boxes and booklets, I have the Coltane, Evans, Montgomery and Davis sets all in 12" boxes. They say made/printed in the USA.
Heard the first half of Up All Night. Too gimmicky by half for me. Very much better is Sco's contribution to Roy Haynes' Love Letters. Just about as straight ahead as Sco gets.
