The old ‘fruit box’ goes back over 40 years in design terms but over the years Linn and third parties have given options for bearing, power supply, suspension and even outer body upgrades. You can spend from circa £1.5k to £30k+. I think the only original bits on mine are the platter and outer body ! You can also get good UK dealers to build up a s/h LP12 for you - a cost effective option. It isn’t a cheap option but it is built to last. Servicing usually a good move every 10 years or so. Another advantage is that cosmetically it can look very good. I wouldn’t worry too much about direct drive either - good belt drive will usually surpass indifferent direct drive at typical price points e.g. for Planar 3. Paging porcy62 for his comments/thoughts on Brinkmann.. A slippery slope...

Rega or Linn would be my recommendation. With Rega you can start more basic at e.g. Planar 3 and work up the range. I’ve used a Linn LP12 for many years and swear by it - wonderfully upgradeable but you could start with the core ‘Basik’.

‘Modern-mainstream’ seems to have morphed into ‘mainstream’. The latter I think of as Scott Hamilton, Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff etc. and if you are getting adventurous, Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer.

‘Rampant’ is over exaggerating it - at least at present. The levels are also very localised, albeit spreading out. A couple of deaths a day nationwide.

Apparently Charles T. has just undergone an emergency dental procedure. Hope he gets well soon. Rescheduled for Sept I think.

The ‘Prince Albert’ - an occasional location for a pint or two when I lived in this area, back in the day. Never saw any jazz there though. Some good stuff being put out on this label but I have had playback troubles on my CD player with at least one of their disks (one of the compilations). Agree that they are very good value.

Good advice. I too have had work colleagues who never made it even to retirement and others who maybe had just a few years after retirement. Certainly has given me pause for thought, the systems/software/IT area can be brutal. At the pre-retirement training I took, one of the recommendations was to put together an action plan linked to your new goals/aspirations and to regularly review it. They recommended maybe 3-4 diverse goals and linking these with your interests/hobbies/talents, maybe perhaps putting the consultancy in as part of a portfolio.

Strut have done a fine job on this facsimile release with an informative booklet. Very much a time capsule but in a very good way.

Record Store Day 21 Ordered the ‘Egypt Strut’ Salah Ragab from my local store (Strut Records 2LP) plus an order for Harold Land ‘Westward Bound’ and the Ron Carter ‘Golden Striker’ signed edition from JazzMesengers. Resisted the ‘Quiet Kenny’ hype..

Blast from the past. I remember them playing it too, at Ronnie Scott’s and I think it was 1980 as well. They played quite a bit of the album ‘Don’t Lose Control’. This is the first time I am hearing this Carnegie Hall material - very positive first impressions.

I don’t know much about Percy France Dan but this website looks extremely good - very comprehensive and in depth, reminding me of James Harrod’s similarly excellent West Coast site. Well done sir !

Hopefully - but not holding my breath. According to the bio, Stan hated it. Personally, I think it’s great ! Which reminds me, I need to get ‘Free an’ One’ with Peter King, recently reissued by Clark T. Wonder if the ‘British Jazz Explosion’ will reissue some of Stan’s albums on vinyl?

Didn’t that spin off from Carl Jefferson’s Summer Jazz Parties, when he used to invite pretty well everyone in US Mainstream jazz? That label got a lot of profile (relatively speaking - for jazz that is) from the mid 70s through the 80s.

I think the first CD version that came out was white spine ‘Collectors Choice’. Still have my copy. Big John did have a habit of issuing one offs on BN which then went into obscurity (i.e. ‘Memphis’ German Liberty). Liking it !

A classic. Didn’t that one have Tony Crombie, Benny Green and (possibly) Red Price on it ? Cherry Wainer on organ.

Mine arrived OK but I kept a standing guard on arrival day in case it was ejected into the nearby ditch !
