  1. Yep - It has been on my list for many years, just found a copy . A very different album to the slightly later ‘Under Milk Wood Suite’, upbeat and not so moody (although ‘Culloden Moor’ has some of the latter). Both fine albums in their different ways. Recording quality somewhat muddy though, Jeff Clyne’s bass in particular. On the whole though, this is a fascinating early snapshot of British Jazz on the cusp of change. Bobby Wellins is missed from our scene, that is for sure. Stan Tracey too.
  2. Transatlantic, mono
  3. Hear, hear.
  4. That is the saving grace in all this. I might buy one or two of these more out of curiosity but the CDs, orig. LPs, Mosaic reissues and King/Toshiba reissues more than cover all the bases. I’m done ! The Hoffman Board has quote a lengthy explanation (by Kevin Gray I think) linked to type of tape used and mechanisms for ageing and damage which I find quite convincing. I am assuming that recent Japanese CD reissues were not affected as they utilised master tape copies taken more than 30 years ago - presumably the ones originally utilised by King and Toshiba for their reissue LPs?
  5. Appalling - but glad to hear that you found your LP pack OK. Enjoy !
  6. A minor miracle - congrats ! The golden rule seems to be, if you have to use these guys, order the LP set only. The roads in this country seem to be absolutely devoid of Hermes vans. Haven’t seen one for weeks.
  7. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I wanted a copy of the LP version I would have avoided udiscover. They’ve got us over a barrel on that one.
  8. I think I’ve seen copies of that Mingus 45 in the racks. Usually trashed !
  9. Yeah, he’s really good on this one. According to the notes, it was a late switch on bass. Impressive ! Fine album, by the way.
  10. Pretty rubbish service from udiscover/Hermes I have to say. They have a few more days yet to redeem themselves. Maybe the diabolical wet weather and typhoons in Surrey are delaying things?
  11. I would always put ‘Happenings’, ‘Oblique’, ‘Components’, ‘Total Eclipse’, ‘Spiral’ and ‘Medina’ at the front but for sure, it is a mighty fine session. Might even be tempted by this Tone Poet !
  12. Thanks for that - looking forward to this set even more !
  13. Conn version - already sounding very good indeed so the Mosaic should be a revelation, perhaps. Maybe a bit grainy but I suspect that is the recording.
  14. Really sorry to hear that. Total incompetence ! Why aren’t they using ‘signed for’ by purchaser/address? This whole palava is getting me paranoid, once I get the courier dispatch mail I will be keeping visual watch 24/7.
  15. The Ronnie’s performance was about 1980. They were lead in group to one of the US bands. I actually met Alan Ganley once - sat next to him at a Gerald Wilson concert in London. Nice guy - at the interval he went off back stage to ‘see the guys’ so I figured he must be a muso . It was only some time after the gig that I realised who I’d met and of course kicked myself long and hard. A similar thing happened sat next to Jeff Kruger at a Wayne Shorter gig. Alan, of course, did nicely over in the US during his 1970s stint.
  16. Racking my brains on the rest of the lineup - Martin Drew on drums and Spike Heatley on bass I think. It was at Ronnies.
  17. Hope those Hermes courier wagons are revving up tomorrow..
