  1. The 500 figure I mentioned apparently covers all the pending orders, not just the Mobley and Herman.
  2. Perhaps ‘Jazz Monthly’? The author’s name looks familiar though.. https://www.snotr.com/video/4935/Arthur_Two_Sheds_Jackson
  3. I’ve got the feeling that I might have seen Pyne’s trio at Scotts. For sure, I did see him with Humphrey Lyttelton’s band and with brother Chris on trombone. Sadly, both of these guys are no longer with us.
  4. Really enjoying this one - must be turning into Austin Powers !
  5. Most definitely - exceeds the already high expectations. Nice to see your Big Band lined up to do a ‘Plays The Music of Tubby Hayes’ headliner at Swanage next Summer, Simon !
  6. According to Scott there’s currently a backlog of about 500 shipments - the Herman and Mobley sets must be selling well. My sets should be on their way in a couple of weeks.
  7. 2CDs in glorious stereo - from the Fontana Box
  8. Can’t go wrong with Wally ! I have a couple of those German Horzu (plus umlaut) pressings. Generally excellent.
  9. This whole subject could be discussed ad infinitum but all I can say is it is implementation dependent and at the end of the day, I let my ears make the decision. I have just spun McCoy’ ‘Dedication Series’ ABC Impulse set from the ‘oil crisis’ era and compared it with Impulse’s best CD issue. No contest, not even close - at least on my rig (and surprising, in terms of the vintage of the platter/quality of the vinyl) . Other set ups and references for comparison may give very different results. CD playback has its issues too - no D/A conversion is perfect. At the end of the day - it is all good and if your ears and senses dig it, that’s all that counts ! I am very happy with both CD and LP sources and we are spoilt for choice with the media available.
  10. Quality of the source and its phono-amplification, I find, is critical. Absolutely no point buying Tone Poets etc. to spin on a basic deck. These days I find that the difference on my system has narrowed somewhat - especially with recent superb HQ CD issues such as the Tubby Hayes set. Where good quality/condition vinyl media is involved, the vinyl usually has a clear edge (at least in the opinion of my Mk 1 ears ) and in my system.
  11. Interesting factoid - the late Terry Brown, trumpeter and producer on many of these Fontana sessions (his voice can be heard calling takes on ‘Grits’) is apparently the grandfather of present day British/Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed. Terry Brown deserves great credit towards the success of these sessions (he had toured with Tubbs in the 1950s).
  12. First spin of this one, no less. Nice to hear Louis Stewart again.
  13. The time I saw him, he played in a few reunion lineups and participated in a panel session. Still very much on form and a natural comedic talent.
  14. Glad I got to see him - he was quite a character and a fine player. Will spin his West Coast Classics CD - RIP.
  15. All winners.. (as is the Wayne).
  16. Hopefully none of the King original issues like Oblique, Inner Glow etc. ?
  17. His latest magnum opus.
  18. Same here.
  19. (wakes in a cold sweat..)
  20. The sound is so good on the CD set that I could happily live just with that version. Will probably change my mind though after I delve into the LPs. I have found too that I have been playing each disk 4 or 5 times before moving on to the next one. Simon’s book beckons for a re-read.
  21. I remember reading somewhere that the earlier CD issues, even Japanese Fontana, were LP dubs. Having said that, some of them e.g the Costanzo session and the 2 Ronnie Scotts LPs sounded pretty nice in earlier versions. Just playing bonus 7” single ‘Sally’. Gracie Fields it aint. Unlikely choice of tune for sure - ‘only in the UK’.
  22. On the plus side of things - I came out with many more fine S/H buys from Mole’s upstairs ‘Collectors LPs’ section than I ever traded in. I think my ‘Flam’ was originally bought from them as a deletion as well, so I came out of it pretty well evens !
