  2. Looking at that blurred cover I was wondering if it could be the other side of Gerald Wilson's 'Alive and Swinging' LP on World Pacific so have pulled that one out for a check - the back is completely different. Doesn't look like any of the Jack Wilson albums either that I'm familiar with.
  3. He's on for a couple of nights at Ronnie Scott's in a few months time. Tempting !
  4. OOTB 'Inside Track' (BN Manhattan)

  6. More likely the quality of the playback equipment. LP source to amp chain is quite a bit better than CD on my system so very much dependent on individual setup. Have experimented further with the isolation platform on the CD player as well - some substantial gains in terms of level of detail and control. Conclusion - both benefit enormously from a platform.
  7. An amazing cast lineup in that movie - Lee, Cushing, Donald Sutherland, Michael Gough, Castle, Bernard Lee, 'Fluff' Freeman - and Tubby and co. I really enjoyed seeing it again and agree that the effects didn't hinder it too much. Amicus got a bit better in their later films in the 70s I think.
  8. Excellent late vintage BN Quebec. Recommended. My comment was specific to the sonics. At the risk of being roasted on the 'other thread' by one particular windup merchant, the switch back to vinyl was like an extra dimension being added back to the music and much more involving. I have just today also added a turntable isolation platform to the set up, so the difference now is even more marked.
  9. Saw the 'Dr Terror' on the box last night as well and recorded it. Great clip of the Hayes Quintet on that 'Voodoo' story. I remember when Trunk Records did that limited EP release of the music on a few hundred copies - it sold out in a flash. Nice to see the film of Jimmy Deuchar on mellophonium - I assume that Roy Castle wasn't actually playing on the soundtrack on trumpet, although recall that used to do trumpet in his Record Breakers 'act'. Fair bit of prominence too to Alan Ganley on the footage. The special effects were pretty rubbish though - especially that crawling hand and the triffid.
  10. Kenny's a good guy - remember him coming around to the tables at Pizza Express in London years ago and shooting the breeze, also chatting in Japanese to people at the table next to me.
  11. Ike Quebec 'Heavy Soul' (BN NY USA mono) The sonic equivalent of a cold bath after several days of CD only..
  12. Yep, the episode lengths were set at the time per the requirements of US commercial stations (CNN?) as distinct from UK terrestrial stations. I don't think that helped.
  13. Thought that series was a bit patchy - nowhere near as good as World At War. Having said that - I bought the book.
  14. That 'Spirit Level' song (his big solo hit) is obviously a spoof of 'Sledgehammer'. I assume that the 'Chinese Meal' protest song is a spoof of 'Biko'. Yep, the Kate Bush duet was damn funny ! Chinese Meal
  15. Saw a TV advert for that one on one of the obscure digital channels the other day.
  16. Brian Pern is one of the very funniest things on BBC in recent years. They should put out a CD of his and Thotch' 'hits' and maybe a 'Day Of The Triffids' concept album.

I find that my player also has some trouble playing the 80 minute CDs and needs repeat presses on the play button to do so., when the disk is started up (I initially thought it was a puck issue but suspect that isn't the case). Some of the recent German Impulse twofers are the usual culprit for this behaviour.
  18. That whole Savoy twofer series was fantastic. I picked up most of the UK/German issues when they came out. The later US-only issues such as 'Gong' were a bit harder to get hold of but they do crop up over here and I have most of them. The UK issue of Coltrane/Harden 'Countdown' and Byrd 'Long Green' sound particularly good and full of 'umph'. My favourite issue of that Booker Little was put out in the mid 70s by Richard Williams on Island Records as 'The Legendary Quartet Album'. Good haul on the Mobley - my 47W63rd mono copy has a deep groove on one side I think so the session must have been issued in the transitionary era. 'Soul Station' has deep grooves on both sides.
  19. Happy Birthday !
  20. Yusef Lateef 'Gong' (Savoy 2LP)
  21. Looks like it's imminently back in stock with Amazon UK.
