  1. I finally got a shipping notice. . . for the Woody Herman. Probably shouldn't have pre-paid when the set was announced!
  2. John Coltrane "Impressions . . . Graz 1962"
  3. Two very different jazz discs. Gary Bartz "The Red and Orange Poems" Atlantic Records Freddie Hubbard "Pinnacle: Live and Unreleased from the Keystone Korner" Resonance Records
  4. I like a lot of Oscar's playing. I think the "London House" set is a great set of a working band in situ and some exciting playing from all three of the trio. I like his early work too, the earliest stuff that is on an RCA set and on a Hip-O-Select set. The man is a part of jazz history, in part because of his service as "house pianist" for Granz's JATP period and in part for his status as a popular artist in the genre in the 'fifties and 'sixties and beyond. Decided to play this one, which I like a lot.
  5. Off to spend the day with my Dad. This is a good send off! "Lonely Woman" will remain a timeless classic. Ornette Coleman "Shape of Jazz To Come" Warner Japan cd.
  6. I have many Miles Davis discs, and even though I have culled the collection considerably. . . still have a lot. There are Japanese releases that sound considerably better than any of the US release, at least to me in my system, and I will keep them and listen to them when I want to hear that music.
  7. I noticed this as an eBay item the first week of November and in essence pre-ordered it through that seller, one I trusted. Looking forward to this! The Bitches Brew two channel mastering was excellent and anticipate this one will be as well.
  8. Joe Henderson "Lush Life," Verve cd. "Isafahan" is a beautiful performance.
  9. Are you talking about "The Congregation" . . . that's a quartet session with Sonny Clark.
  10. Ray Benson! The man swings. Right now Tia Fuller, "Diamond Cut." Joe Henderson fans will particularly like her "Joe'n Around."
  11. I never became a Bruce Springsteen fan. In part he came up when I was head over heels seeking out jazz and fusion and still in the thrall of classic blues. And also in part that in my then "private Idaho" the people really into Bruce . . . were people I wasn't very impressed with or flat disliked. I definitely don't dispute his talent. The "E Street" stuff has never grabbed me but whenever I have heard or seen Bruce alone with a guitar, electric especially, I recognize that's how I like him best.
  12. Honest to gosh I avoid blows to the head and brain cell destroying things and I have a pretty darned good memory, not "photographic," but pretty darned good. I read those booklets a few times before storing them, and I remember what I need to from them. I do on occasion pluck a few out to peruse while going through the sets, they are in climate controlled storage and in a cabinet I can access easily.
  13. I can see this happening. If I were to pass this week and my wife were to have to deal with my collection she'd see the discs first and sell those and then later find all the boxes and booklets in storage. . . .
  14. So nice to have the stereo warmed up again! Listened to Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" from the Columbia Mono Albums box set Miles Davis "Miles Ahead" from the Columbia Mono Albums box set Art Pepper "At the Village Vanguard" disc 3 from the Complete Village Vanguard Recordings box set
  15. "Domination" fell in the domain of another record conglomeration at the time. I really find myself less and less interested in Nelson arranging as time goes by. His playing though is something to marvel at.
  16. Yes, that's the one I was thinking of, it's out on cd from Europe, I have the LP as well. I was confusing the title with this one I have and love on Bell Records from '61
  17. I adore the Pee Wee Russell on Dot Records "Pee Wee Russell Plays (Pee Wee Russell)" . . .It has been out on a European cd coupled with another Russell LP. Sound is pretty darned decent.
  18. I understand that. I don't have the space either. I'm downsizing slowly, and in the case of these discs it's a program of attrition, I sell another version I have of these when I get the new version. Sigh. It's not easy, it is getting easier.
  19. It's different sounding. I like the sound on both. I love the packaging of these mini-LPs and have begun collecting those I didn't have when I see them priced well, especially the "Japanese RVGs."
  20. This morning I listened to a disc that arrived in the mail yesterday. It's a Japanese LP facsimile cd in the TOCJ 'Super Bit Jazz Classics" series from years back. I had wanted to buy it then but hesitated at the high prices I saw, even though I have the material on LP and in a Mosaic set. Finally saw a reasonably priced copy, and it was sealed. I love this material--good old good 'uns as Pops would say, and Tea is in fine form and well-presented in excellent Capitol recordings: Jack Teagarden "This is Teagarden" After that I wanted to hear another horn player with as lyrical a sound: Gary Bartz, "Reflections of Monk--The Final Frontier" Steeplechase cd Followed by: Gary Bartz "Episode One--Children of Harlem" Challenge cd
  21. Watched a mixed bag of Representatives and four professors today and didn't get much listening to music in. Did listen to: Jackie McLean "One Step Beyond" Blue Note Japan 24 bit by RVG cd. Man this sounds fantastic on the system as it is today. Thelonious Monk "Genius of Modern Music" Blue Note Japan 24 bit by RVG cd. Also sounds fantastic on the system as it is today. Stan Getz "A Go Go" Verve Originals Edition cd. Wanted to listen to vibes again, this time Gary Burton. Sounded really good.
  22. I hadn't noticed the Lester poster, will look for it when I rewatch that episode!
  23. I've a cold that is taking its time getting better and yet luckily hasn't reached my ears. I'm chilling with the third disc of the "Complete Bill Evans on Verve," trio recordings and then a few with Stan Getz. The system sounds fabulous of late. I never heard these Verve discs sound this good before. Wow. Bill was such a talent. He left behind a huge inventory of recordings. . . but I still think he was taken from us far too soon and we should have had more.
  24. Gil Melle "Quadrama" Prestige OJC cd Great work from Joe Cinderella here. (And Gil Melle.)
