When I think 'sixties piano trios, I think Bill Evans. Man, such great work that decade. And another favorite is a trio plus one (percussionist), Herbie Hancock's "Inventions & Dimensions". . . .

Mosaic's forthcoming James P. Johnson set
jazzbo replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ted, There should be no duplication; different labels. http://indianapublicmedia.org/nightlights/mosaic-records-release-mother-lester-young-box-sets/ -

I'm glad we are getting more of the session with Shepp. . . and will be interested to see how this mastering of the live performance will be.

Watched last night's Gotham. Alfred remains my favorite character. They are really pulling no punches this season. Liked that they played Coltrane/Ellington "In A Sentimental Mood" in the bar scene. Watching Minority Report. . .. I seem to like it more than others, it's okay. Edit to add: I finished watching the episode. I like this series so far. Casting seems okay to me. Biggest drawbacks: set so far in the future and doesn't seem to be that far in the future to me, but that is necessary because of the "grown up and free" aspect to the lives of the pre-cogs; done in Canada with that look that all those shows so produced have. . . takes me out of the settings even further so to speak. But I like the theme of the three pre-cogs dealing with their lives and gifts in their way. I know I am going to tire of the "murder of the week" bit but see that at least at this point it's necessary. I think this could grow to be the new "Fringe" for me.

Hey I have some Pennsylvania Dutch ancestory too,and I also come from other German religious separatists from Pennsylvania predominantly known as Moravians (more of them in my heritage than the Pennsylvania Dutch). This is unfortunate for VW and really all car-makers. But who is surprised to find that "truth" isn't everywhere in that or other industries?

Yeah, I mostly watched it for Kerry Washington, I think she's gorgeous and I like watching her. . . . I also like Guillermo Diaz. But after Season 1 it hasn't been as good.

Watched Heroes Reborn, which is a welcome return, already better imo than Agents of SHIELD. Also watched the premier of this sesason of Scandal, which was a waste of time. And started watching the final season of Leverage on DVD.

Are there any box bargains currently available?
jazzbo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just all the material released on the previously issued double CDs: Monk In Tokyo Newport 63 & 65 Big Band & Quartet in Concert Live at the It Club Live at the Jazz Workshop Now where is the 1965 Brandeis Concert, one track of which was on the long oblivious Misterioso LP? Where is the live track from Mexico with Bubeck? Will we ever see a proper reissue of these? Probably not. That's why I don't like these boxes. I have all of this music, and so much of the Ellingtons that I am not willing to buy this box just for two albums missing in my collection. No way. Like you I suspect we won't see proper reissues of these, and wouldn't wether this box came out or not. I can understand your unwillingness to buy these but I like the consolidation that occurs with these boxes as well as the sonic improvements of portions of the material. -

Deep Discount is listing this set for $50.64. Still says 9/18 as the release date, which doesn't appear to be correct. http://www.deepdiscount.com/duke-ellington-complete-columbia-albums-collection-1959-1961-v2/886979388925 Shipping date on my amazon UK order has finally been changed from September 18 to October 30. -

Shostakovich, via the symphonies.

mjzee, to me this sort of thing can be fascinating, and reminds me of rehearsing and recording sessions I participated in in Austin so many years ago. I'm looking forward to it. I've read that book John, a good read.

It would suit me probably too. . . but I can't help but wonder what those takes of Visions of Johanna (one of my favorite Dylan works of all time) sound like as I love the one they put on Bootleg Vol.7 more than the original released take. . . and a whole disc of the evolution of Like a Rolling Stone? I want to hear that.

I'm in for the six cd set.

Thanks for the link. I don't know why they say they are the only place in America you can preorder these when you can clearly preorder them on amazon.com, cduniverse.com, bestbuy.com and probably elsewhere. -
Alex Riel's wife singing Pres' "Lady Be Good solo

She stirs the gravy nicely. -
Watched Minority Report, Fox. Not bad, I give any PKD material a chance, and it sure isn't hard to watch Meagan Good. One episode to go of Heroes, Season 4, just in time for Heroes Reborn premiering tomorrow. Also watched Fast 'n Loud. Wish they would go back to completing cars in one episode.

If they make a biopic about Pops in the future
jazzbo replied to skeith's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have seen years ago a clip of Ben Vereen portraying Louis meeting/talking with someone playing Jack Teagarden. . . that was from this tv production: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074819/ Seeing Lawrence Fishbourne lately has made me think he'd be a great Ellington. Tracy at the Emmys -

I grew up with this and I love it. The trio selections on this one are excellent. Any trio by Costa, but this one is a favorite.

I noticed the same thing seeing him on the Emmys last night. -
Probably as good as any other version. . . .?
-
Hey my friend. . . . I really like the "Deluxe" two cd version which has mastering by RVG but many don't prefer that one. My other favorite is a "K2" remastered Japanese cd that has just the material as originally issued, But the most recent single disc reissue from Verve (which I have as a part of a "Complete Impulse Album Collection" volume) sounds quite good to me.
