  1. Talk about a resume! Take a look at this from wiki: n the 1950s he worked with Tiny Grimes, George Wallington, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Elmo Hope, Bud Powell and Freddie Redd. From 1960 to 1963 he played in Thelonious Monk's quartet, and then with the Les Double Six of Paris in 1964. Later in the 1960s he played again with Powell and also recorded with Teddy Wilson. In the 1970s he worked with Earl Hines. He was with the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1982.
  2. RIP Mr. Ore. Sorry to hear you've gone.
  3. I'm definitely goofy, and I love girlfriend's goofiness. This gal just creeps me out a bit too much. But I'm glad many enjoy her blog.
  4. Tokyo Quartet revisited the Beethoven String Quartets and really good price for 8 (hybrid) SACDs: http://www.amazon.com/Beethoven-Complete-Quartets-Tokyo-Quartet/dp/B00L5J4PYC/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1420496948&sr=1-1&keywords=Tokyo+Quartet+Beethoven+SACD
  5. I like all the New Jazz sides. . .they're my favorite of his.
  6. Many happy returns!
  7. Many happy returns Marty!
  8. She sure is a good-looking woman, I'd sure like to feed her some food! That voice gets me.
  9. Now onto Torchwood: Children of Earth. A long story arc like this is exactly what Torchwood has needed. Makes me want to say "Brilliant!"
  10. This will depend on how much you are into 'thirties music I think. This is some of the best music of the decade, and these sides have rarely sounded better, and have never been assembled in this way with consistent mastering any better, not even close. I'd sample some tracks, and if you feel you'll grow into really enjoying the music, this is a set to target, certainly. You have some good choices though if you're a vinyl player or will be moving in that direction--the Smithsonian LP collections of this material sound very very good imo. And are not that hard to gather reasonably priced.
  11. Ah, you already have plenty to listen to! (So do I, but I know that's besides the point!) Good decision though.
  12. Right on Paul. Mike, your thinking cap is on straight!
  13. Don't know, I'm the opposite, I don't do digital files, hate 'em. Nothing special about the packaging.
  14. Be wary, apparently the first pressing of this new edition has the bonus track at an erroneous speed.
  15. And Season 3, coming up in four weeks, will be interesting too, with the kid's future endangered and the parents none too happy about it!
  16. Season 2 is also quite good.
  17. OOOH I'm sure that's fun.
  18. Finished watching The Americans Season 2 and Torchwood Season 2. Now watching The Pacific.
  19. Good. I'm not into that so maybe I can do something else with my life.
  20. Well, Universal did release new transfers of Blue Note titles (Brown, Coltrane, Davis, Monk. . . ) in interesting re-packagings. From the same transfers the Japanese released more than twenty times as many discs, so point taken. I guess the future is in downloads, which would be good really, I could bow out of collecting conceivably as I am not into those. . . .
  21. Hope it's a great one! Many happy returns!
  22. I'm so not into the "best possible" of everything. A few things, like pre-tape sessions I think are super important, but not modern stuff. Maybe that's why I'm fine with these, maybe my system makes the most of them, but whatever it is, I'm enjoyng each set, quite listenable.
  23. That's cool. I have every set and am resonably happy with the sound. I don't stream and I'm not going to buy up the old cds, even at that price the sets are still cheaper by far. I'm lucky my system renders them listenable. (I probably wouldn't like them on headphones but I'm no longer using headphones).
  24. The ones i've heard (about 14 sets, though not the Trovesi or any of the other recent ones) sound fine to me, at least not butchered. Not really wanting to get into a massive discussion about it as i feel like we've been there before: just want to present an alternative viewpoint FWIW. I share that alternate viewpoint. So glad I find these listenable as the music is very enjoyable and the sets are a bargain compared to coralling the previous cds. I haven't heard the other Trovesi yet, but none of the other sets are unlistenable on my system.
  25. Many happy returns! You share the same birthday as my Mom and one of my nephews!
