the sun 'sets' on another year
jazzbo replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Another pepsi cola-fueled curt response. -
There's more than just alternates as a difference between the two sets. I say get the 8 disc, it will be a cornerstone of your Parker collection for years and years to come. There are sessions in the Mosaic set with more complete items (i.e. not just Parker solos) and some sound pretty darned good all considered. But the Savoy/Dial box smokes them in the sound quality of the original source material. Both boxes have different types of liner notes, but they're both pretty good.

Lester Young/Basie Set Selling Well
jazzbo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
And a nice booklet. I'd get the set rather than track down old LPs and boot cds of the live stuff. I have almost all that live (and studio) stuff on other sources, and it sounds SO MUCH BETTER on the box set. -
I finished watching Caprica Season 1.0 and have started on Season 1.5. First off, the dvd sets are a rip-off. . . they're priced almost as if they were each a full season, but they're only a half season each. I was hoping for Blu-Ray releases but I confess that the upscaled dvd image is excellent and the sound is very good. But despite the overpricing. . . I loved this show. So sorry it's been canceled. Battlestar Galactica fans seem disappointed that it wasn't Battlestar Galactica. I'm glad that it took a very different path. I think that their treatment of the possibility of a "virtual world" part internet and part virtual reality was masterful. Following three likely paths for this virtual world may be confusing to many but intrigued me. One path the world took was a hedonistic playground for all vices fuled by young hormones. Another was the proposed use of the virtual world as a "heavenly place" as reward for religious service. And the third proposed use is as a way to create versions of lost loved ones and allow a mourner to interact with a near identical departed loved one. The subtle exploration of the moral and social ramifications of all these intrigue me. I also found the portrayal of terrorists in this series to be fascinating. I know one viewer who was upset that the show seemed to be portraying Christians as terrorists. That shows to me that the writer's intent was realized. Fascinating show that I recommend to science fiction and tv drama enthusiasts.

Put them on your want list, select that you'd like to be emailed when they arrive back in stock. Probably will have them back in stock in a week or so.

I agree with you Stefan, nice reissues indeed. I also picked up "Golden Boy" and "Joe Williams and LH&R Sing Along with Basie." Nice series.

The music sounds really pretty good in this set. I like the last disc the least, but overall a good collection, a good sampling of the label. -
Congrats! I only made it 2 and a half years. . . . I feel a real need for work. Looking forward to returning to the workforce. Now I'm just hoping we don't have bad winter storms and I can two-wheel to work safely and dependably.

WTF? Why was the "Elvis Thread" locked?
jazzbo replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Forums Discussion
Glad the thread in question is now open. My thoughts on seeing it locked were also "WTF". . . seemed unwarranted and capricious. I thought the dialog was surprisingly civil. Me, I like Elvis, in nice small doses. -

Lennie McBrowne albums discussion
jazzbo replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Re-issues
Me too. I used some Xmas money to place a pretty big order from Worlds Records online, that includes the McBrowne and Edwards. -
That's interesting. Though i do find the presentation just a tad brighter than I'd like, I don't hear a shrill, harsh, unreal sound to the brass for example. The horns have a bit of bite. . .but horns do in "reality" as well. And these sound similar to the sound of instruments on 78s that I hear on my father's 78s in playback. I think that we should be grateful for the sparing use of noise reduction here, and we're really getting to hear a lot more of the sound of the recording than we have in some instances in the past. I know a lot of these sonic things can be system and even "ear" related. I'm quite happy with the sound of this set, and prefer it to earlier cd versions I have of this material for detail and dynamics. But I can truly understand if someone else hears it differently, as I find I sometimes hear things differently than others.

Fresh Sound has also just brought some Teddy Edwards to cd that was not on cd yet I believe. -
Got this reissue when it was first released. Just one of a string of pearls from this band at that time. All these albums should be out and in print.

Yes, a year younger than me, two years older than my late wife was, way too young. At first I read "Tanya Maria." Glad she's still with us all.

Son of a preacher man here found that "Bolero/(Hey Baby) New Rising Sun" from the new Jimi Hendrix box set "West Coast Seattle Boy" was the track of the week. Great to practice drumming to.
