  1. Haven't been yet, but really want to go. I've been going to SXSW for several years, and it's just a week after that so the timing is bad. I'm thinking of switching festivals after this year, though.
  2. There's also a very interesting festival in Knoxville that he's appearing in, right before that: the Big Ears Festival. A very eclectic and intriguing lineup of artists, too! Check it out.
  3. I liked the Select formula, too. I guess the economics of the recorded music industry are taking their toll. I have a very similar collection as Rooster (but only 10), with a few exceptions: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 16, 20, 26 + Tony Williams and Akiyoshi/Tabackin FYI on the "Free Shipping" - only if over $50.
  4. Pretty much what I think about the set(s), too. Nice idea, but ...

    John Wetton, RIP

    I always liked Fearless!
  6. I really haven't listened to it either. Hard to concentrate on in an open room. Will need to headphone it, I think.
  7. I think he had been battling cancer for a while. He was really good in that Stephen Frears film "The Hit" with Terence Stamp.
  8. He posted on another topic about a week ago, too. I don't remember which one.
  9. Looking forward to tonight at SFJAZZ. Rova Saxophone Quartet plays John Coltrane's 'Ascension' & Tribute to Butch Morris
  10. I saw Heron Oblivion last night. Not sure they really meet the "Post-Rock" description, but they ARE sort of uncategorizable. Their dual psychedelic guitar sound ranges from swirling wah-wah to low-key Brit-folk to Sonic Youth feedback-laced guitar solos. The drummer Meg Baird is also the lead singer who's voice is somewhere between Sandy Denny and Jacqui McShee - so, totally in opposition to the overall sound of the band. Genre description on FB: Funeral Folk, Fuzz burn, Pastoral Pop, Field Rock, Albion Dirge (traditional), etc
  11. Not being a big Jaco fan, I would be interested in hearing more pre-Jaco live performances. I have "Live in Tokyo", but that's just scratching the surface.
  12. THIS should be good! Ralph Towner, solo / John Abercrombie Quartet Thursday, February 23, 7:30pm at SFJAZZ Center, Miner Auditorium
  13. Great, thanks! I've listened to one or two Explosions in the Sky albums and don't like them. Seems like meandering power trio jamming - but maybe I'm missing something.
  14. OK - this is interesting. I'm not familiar with a lot of these bands. I have a couple of Tortoise albums that are so-so, and heard about Mogwai for a long time but never got any. What are some "post-rock" bands that are active and producing good albums? That's what I would be most interested in. I like bands that I might have a chance to see live.
  15. Going to the Tony Williams Spotlight at SFJAZZ on Thursday. Should be pretty exciting with this lineup of artists. CONCERT INCLUDES PERFORMANCES BY Zakir Hussain · Joshua Redman · Terence Blanchard Mary Stallings · Joe Lovano · Bill Frisell Stefon Harris · Cindy Blackman Santana Eric Harland · John Santos · Kronos Quartet SFJAZZ Collective
  16. This was only 2-3 tunes and the sound problem seemed to have something to do with a faulty cable. I've heard at least one of his live albums and was a little under-whelmed, myself.
  17. I saw Joey D a few months ago in the Bobby Hutcherson Memorial Concert at SFJAZZ. He only did a few tunes, but seemed pretty locked in even though there were sound problems with his B3.
  18. Jim, you and your wife sure have an eye for design. I was just about to mention the Eames/Miller shelving unit in the current episode, too! We also have one of those red molded plywood chairs and a George Nelson slat bench that you showed, but they're not vintage - they're about 6 years old. When we moved we went 'Herman Miller shopping' and also got a "surfboard table" and a dining room set. These are examples of 2 of the Grossman lamps we have.
  19. I'm kind of addicted to the Roadshow, too. Haven't seen many of the UK editions, though. Those items you kept are very cool for sure! Are you familiar with Greta Grossman? I have a few of her original Cobra-style lamps - both desk and floor models - that my parents bought 'way back when'. Also lucky to have the classic Eames Lounge Chair & Ottoman from the 60s (or maybe earlier).
  20. Yep - sounds great! Like a small, jazz-oriented South by Southwest. I've been going to Austin for the past 10 years, but it's MUCH bigger and MUCH more expensive. Same concept, though - an enormous amount of performance options that are presented in small venues around the downtown area.
  21. Teague definitely had a flair for deco product design! I've seen that large mirrored disk radio in a gallery or museum before. Very striking in person, too. And Noguchi's "Radio Nurse" has been appraised on Antiques Roadshow
  22. I have to get to this Fest one of these days!
  23. Very nice examples of those cameras, Jim. Especially the box with that Gift Kodak! The 3 Beau Brownies are very cool, too. I actually have a Bantam Special (the pin striped black deco item) in very nice condition similar to yours. I've seen it on display at MoMA in NYC, too. They're definitely collectors items, as are all those you pictured which are in great condition. Thanks for sharing!
  24. One last guitar comment. Fender has an interesting 'design your own' guitar program in their Mod Shop. Price varies according to parts of course, but you can put together a really nice instrument for about $1,700. I keep thinking about this, but just can't justify the cost as an amateur part-time musician.
  25. Utter nonsense or not (stat-wise), people in baseball are paying a lot of attention to it. THAT makes it important.
