  1. I remember hearing about that in the 70s or 80s, but never felt it was any of my business to mention or discuss it publicly. She was a regular performer at Keystone Korner.
  2. This is very cool. Willie Mays honored with Cable Car No. 24 for his 85th
  3. As much as I love Tolliver I've never warmed to his BB stuff. There's a harshness that I have trouble getting past.
  4. Probably an Austin City Limits taping.
  5. I think it's only because older music fans are more likely to pay for recorded music. I don't think that streaming is taken into account here.
  6. Will try to get to the SF show, for sure.
  7. You make a good point about dedicating the season to Bobby. I used to see him regularly around the Jazz Center, but not for a while. Last time I saw him he looked pretty frail while hooked up to a mobile oxygen tank. Agreed about how the Collective is usually able to adapt the annual composer's music to their own sound, and also make it interesting no matter who it is. +++ BTW, I have friends at JazzFest and heard about the horrendous rainstorm this past weekend!

    Wayne Shorter

It was like he didn't know who Shorter was. Made some silly comment about "jazzing it up." BTW, that "boring-ass country singer" was Sturgill Simpson, one of the more innovative and interesting "country" artists to come around in a LONG time.
  9. "Asylum"? You're TOO kind!
  10. Up.........for ANOTHER b-day. Have a GREAT-A-ROO day, AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. Every year the SFJAZZ Collective's mission is to select a music legend and then woodshed for several weeks. They then re-arrange that artist's compositions for the ensemble and also write new pieces with that artist's influence in mind. When they're ready to go, they tour, record live, and then release a 2 CD album that's split evenly between originals and 'covers'. They've only recently expanded the artists they are honoring from strictly jazz to pop with Stevie Wonder and more recently MJ.
  12. Tomorrow: Dee Dee Bridgewater at SFJAZZ.
  13. Second time through is definitely better. Still not sure if I'd buy it ... but MAYBE!
  14. It seems more unfocused than in the past. Part of it might be the presence of Neal Schon, but I haven't heard any albums by the "regular" Santana band for a long time, either.
  15. I just finished listening to it. It's frustratingly inconsistent. Some interesting stuff and a lot of meandering "jamming". It's being streamed on NPR until the April 15 release date here: First Listen: Santana, 'Santana IV'
  16. I've wanted this for years and apparently it's OOP again. I found a Connoisseur version at Amoeba today.
  17. I'm sure you have great memories of that!
  18. Good to know. I'll probably pick this one up. Obviously one of Duane's last shows, and about 6 weeks before I saw them.
  19. RIP, Bill. Sad that his passing will no doubt go largely unnoticed with the near-simultaneous high profile obituaries of Gato and Merle.
  20. I wouldn't expect any LESS, Chuck!
  21. Yes - Earth Beams is one of their best, for sure! I was fortunate to see the Quartet a few times. Unfortunately, never saw Mingus.
  22. How is that different from this album that was just released?
