  1. Every year the SFJAZZ Collective's mission is to select a music legend and then woodshed for several weeks. They then re-arrange that artist's compositions for the ensemble and also write new pieces with that artist's influence in mind. When they're ready to go, they tour, record live, and then release a 2 CD album that's split evenly between originals and 'covers'. They've only recently expanded the artists they are honoring from strictly jazz to pop with Stevie Wonder and more recently MJ.
  2. Tomorrow: Dee Dee Bridgewater at SFJAZZ.
  3. Second time through is definitely better. Still not sure if I'd buy it ... but MAYBE!
  4. It seems more unfocused than in the past. Part of it might be the presence of Neal Schon, but I haven't heard any albums by the "regular" Santana band for a long time, either.
  5. I just finished listening to it. It's frustratingly inconsistent. Some interesting stuff and a lot of meandering "jamming". It's being streamed on NPR until the April 15 release date here: First Listen: Santana, 'Santana IV'
  6. I've wanted this for years and apparently it's OOP again. I found a Connoisseur version at Amoeba today.
  7. I'm sure you have great memories of that!
  8. Good to know. I'll probably pick this one up. Obviously one of Duane's last shows, and about 6 weeks before I saw them.
  9. RIP, Bill. Sad that his passing will no doubt go largely unnoticed with the near-simultaneous high profile obituaries of Gato and Merle.
  10. I wouldn't expect any LESS, Chuck!
  11. Yes - Earth Beams is one of their best, for sure! I was fortunate to see the Quartet a few times. Unfortunately, never saw Mingus.
  12. How is that different from this album that was just released?
  13. Shooting film is admirable, but unless you have a serious reason (artistic, love of the medium, etc) there is really no advantage in this digital age.
  14. VIRGIN AMERICA: A LABOR OF LOVE: REIMAGINING OUR ICONIC LOGO
  15. I'll probably go to the May 18 show. I saw him at the same venue about a year ago with Hamid Drake. Excellent show!
  16. I just did, and he wasn't aware what that tune was. Added that he will get the royalty situation sorted out. He's a pretty honorable guy, so I expect that he really will take care of it. Pat also mentioned in a FB post that "if this sells well, I'll be doing more Herbie-Sharrock - there's more in the vaults that we uncovered."
  17. I need to get this. I'm "friends" with Pat Thomas on FB and he talked about this album a while ago.
  18. For some reason 2016 seems to be especially heavy on the number and frequency of high-profile deaths.
  19. Agreed, but you can't get all of those for $10. I don't have any of those myself. I recently upgraded all my earlier CDs (through Passion Play) to the multiple disk remastered sets, although I read recently that there will be NEW re-re-master of Aqualung soon.
  20. I thought it was a nice piece, too.
  21. "In My Time" is OUT-standing!
  22. Wow. Very sad. I had a friend who took his own life a few years ago. You just never expect THAT to happen. And then it's too late to help.
