  1. Josh told a story about playing a gig with drummer Jeff Ballard. He sent him audio of the tunes ahead of the rehearsals. When they finally met up, he asked to see his transcription and all he had on paper was a picture. At first he was flabbergasted, but after Jeff explained it to him he said it made total sense.
  2. Well, we DID have major rain today. Lots of reports of flooding, power outages and landslides. Fortunately, no problems in my place.
  3. Went to a discussion about the album tonight at SFJAZZ. There was extensive discussion about that document between Josh Redman and Ashley Kahn. On first look it makes no sense, but in a another way it makes total sense.
  4. I wonder if the threat is getting a little blown out of proportion. I remember living in NYC in the 80's when hurricane Gloria was supposed to blow through and raise havoc. Everyone stayed home, and Manhattan was a ghost town. Ultimately we had some rain and some wind, but absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. Anyway......I have no plans for tomorrow, so I'll stick close to home just in case.
  5. Tonight is the first night of the SFJAZZ anniversary celebration with this symposium: MODERATOR Randall Kline PANELISTS Ashley Kahn, writer Ishmael Reed, poet Ravi Coltrane, musician Michael Shrieve, musician Sam Andrew, musician
  6. They just played here on Monday - I missed it. Let us know how the show is! They will be coming back for a second leg of the tour in the spring, playing smaller venues and doing two 90-minute sets. Spring, huh? I wonder if they will make a stop at SXSW?

  9. I think you'll like it. There's a deluxe edition with live stuff, too.
  10. Saw him most recently in March at the Continental Club in Austin during the South by Southwest festival. He was always around there playing and participating in panel discussions. Besides a Hall of Fame musician, he seemed like a great guy and great storyteller, too. He'll be missed, for sure.

  12. Just got back from NYC. Saw the Matisse cutouts at MoMA and the Leonard Lauder cubist collection at the Met...........among many others.
  13. Dolan, did you get the latest Drive-By Truckers? It's probably their best yet. Also check out Sturgill Simpson. He's got a Waylon voice and is a good songwriter with contemporary sensibilities, made obvious by the title of his latest: "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music" In Rock/Pop, my favorite new bands of 2014 are Temples and Syd Arthur: Brit bands with heavy 60s influences.
  14. Just watched "Shine a Light" (Scorcese's film of the Stones at the Beacon in NYC) over the weekend, and he was featured in the band. RIP, Bobby!

  20. Here's an under-the-radar Jackie sideman date that's really solid.
  21. I don't know much about him, but I remember him with Billy Harper, probably from that Angel Eyes album that Randy mentioned.
