  1. Likewise. Keystone Korner, Great American Music Hall... Keystone Korner for Dexter & Jefferson/Cole, too. Freddie was at UC Santa Barbara in the early 70s - my first jazz concert.
  2. I've seen him a number of times with the Cookers, too. Appears to be doing well. Also saw him in the 70s with Dexter, Freddie Hubbard and Eddie Jefferson/Ritchie Cole,
  3. Another one I listened to this morning.
  4. Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman: The Complete Series - $95.49, Amazon
  5. Saw the Drive-By Truckers at the Fillmore last night. Was a little disappointed - they were too loud (or maybe the mix was bad), and a lot of the songs tended to sound alike. Maybe I don't know their music well enough, but I had high expectations, I guess. Sturgill Simpson opened, who's had a LOT of buzz going for him this year. He's got a real Waylon Jennings-type voice, but his lyrics are a little more abstract, and he has a couple of tunes that are down-right psychedelic. His guitar player is a MONSTER.
  6. I liked him when he was paired up with Lee Morgan, too - like Tom Cat, Charisma, Sixth Sense.
  7. Don't forget the Grachan Moncur Mosaic Select. Four of the six albums are Jackie's.
  8. Will do! The Mosaic box is a good place to start.
  9. I think with relatively short sets and multiple small venues, seating would make the logistics of navigating the festival more difficult.
  10. I need to go one of these years. Looks like a mini, jazz version of South by Southwest.
  11. Randall Kline of SFJAZZ Named First Recipient of the Bruce Lundvall Visionary Award
  12. Amazon has a pre-sale price on the CD set of $50.98, so not a huge discount from PopMarket on this one.
  13. Thursday at the Fillmore: Drive-By Truckers, Sturgill Simpson
  14. Good deal on those Ella sets! I have the original 4CD set and it was a lot more than $11.40!
  15. Amazing how many of those names from 2003 are now gone. I would guess at least half of them.

    The Cookers

I see them every time they come through the Bay Area (Yoshi's, SFJAZZ ... whatever) and have never been disappointed. BTW, a couple of interesting shots (among others) of Billy Harper with Lee Morgan on that site.
  17. Here's the latest on this HOAX. No, Robert Plant did not rip up an $800 million offer to reunite Led Zeppelin

    The Cookers

The Cookers launched a new website that includes a Gallery with some VERY cool archival shots of some of the members - HERE.
  19. Seeing the Andrian Belew Power Trio tomorrow night. I hope it's good and not just a 'shred-fest'.
  20. IIRC, the Beatles turned down huge chunks of change when they were all still alive, too. Sometimes it just doesn't make artistic sense to revisit your past - for any amount of money. Especially if you don't "need" the money.

    Thad Jones

Just to second these two recommendations. The Mosaic set is OOP, but can usually be found for a reasonable price on ebay, and "Mean What You Say" is still in print.
  22. Bobby is scheduled to play at The Addition (formerly Yoshi's SF) on Jan 23, 24. I hope he's feeling better and able to make it.
