  1. Warrants repeated listens ... for SURE!
  2. In 2 weeks I'll be in Pomeroy, OH at Jorma's Fur Peace guitar camp taking a workshop with the king of the Tele, Bill Kirchen. Never done anything like this before, but it should be a great experience. I just hope I don't embarrass myself too much.
  3. The Tamarindo trio was excellent. It was very free-flowing and all three members were on the money. They appeared to be totally keyed into one another, as if they'd been playing together for years. I've only seen Malaby once before, with Ralph Alessi. That was a fine group -- and I really dig Alessi -- but in this trio Malaby played with much more freedom and power. I was particularly impressed with his soprano work. (IMO most sax players who double on soprano sound much better on their primary ax.) How long did they play? That might determine whether I'm going to be able to get to the show or not. Sounds great, though - I'm a little more incentivized now.
  4. I have tix for Tamarindo here in SF on Saturday. I hope to go, but will be late if I do because of the Series - bad timing! Go Giants!
  5. You think Tony was a Giants fan?
  6. Only slightly off topic.
  7. OK...........it gets better, later. Especially "Out of the Ghetto".
  8. About the recording quality, here's what the eMusic review says: and
  9. Spotify-ing it now. So far it sounds like generic SD. What am I missing?
  10. What everyone else said. That Tolliver set is a MUST MUST MUST have!
  11. OK - I'm in. Just pledged for a signed CD.
  12. SFJazz Season 1 in the new SFJazz Center has been announced and tickets are on now sale for members. Anticipation is running HIGH.
  13. Sunday: Danilo Pérez piano Ben Street bass Adam Cruz drums
  14. Nice shots Agggggggggggggggg. I like the one you posted on FB, too.
  15. Saw Patti Smith at the Fillmore tonight. I've seen her a lot and this show was more understated than any I've seen before. Don't get me wrong, she rocked out on a number of tunes, but they were mostly few and far between. Lenny played his usual mid-show "Nuggets" set, including "We Ain't Got Nothing Yet" and "Pushin' Too Hard".
  16. Well, they're not coming my way, but you convinced me anyway - I'm gonna check 'em out at the Blue Note in NYC on 6 Oct! It should be fun, Erik! Tonight, SFJazz: The Music of Thelonious Monk Listening Party with Larry Goldings Tomorrow: Wilco in Palm Desert Bring ear plugs for Wilco - seriously!! Had the ear plugs but didn't need them. They were loud, but not uncomfortably so. The venue was a very nice smallish theater with excellent sound. Great show and great experience. Very enthusiastic crowd, too.

    Butch Morris

I received this follow up email from the same source yesterday, so maybe they're trying to limit visitors: Butch’s Mailing Address It's been amazing to see and hear about the number of people who have gone to visit Butch during these past few days. The man created a lot of love in the world. That may be a greater testament to him than even his brilliant music. However, I've gotten word that the flood of visitors is actually hampering attempts to help him heal from this terrible illness, and Butch's family has restricted visits to his room. For those of who want to express your love and support, please send cards and gifts to the following address. Save your best thoughts and prayers for him. Lawrence D. Butch Morris

Received this sad news in an email today: Some terrible news: Butch Morris has cancer and is in hospital in Brooklyn. People like Butch are rare in the world. He's a great, innovative artist and a truly loving, kind man. We'll all be poorer in spirit without him in the world. He's in the fight of his life, so please direct your prayers and love his way.
  20. Giants clinching NL West.
  21. I don't know your age, but I remember a distinct lack of emotional and spiritual gravitas to moon landings after the first 2-3. I think the biggest news was when Alan Shepard launched a golf ball in one of the later missions [yawn]. Hard to get too sentimental over the Shuttles, actually. 'Cargo ships' typically don't leave a lot of romantic memories. Having said all that, I did enjoy today's flyover.
  22. I don't know how sad it is. There have been a number of spectacular robotic missions over the last decade or two. Not the least of which have been trips to Saturn, various Mars rovers, and the Hubble. Nice! Right over Congress St!
  23. Steve Wilson (alto sax) Steven Wilson (P-Tree)
  24. Saw it today near the Bay Bridge with several thousand of my closest friends.
  25. I was looking at these for affordable cases - Gator. Might be worth checking out. Sweeeeeeet! Surf's up, eh? I've had a bunch of Strats over the years (and still have one), but no other Fender models- not even a Tele. So many guitars, so little time. Anyway, love the look of those gold anodized guards. Enjoy, my man. Will do, Jim! Great guitar for the price, that's for sure!
