"Self Portrait" is a collection of tunes that Artie himself assembled a few years ago (before he passed away ... obviously). Not necessarily hits, but interesting and unusual stuff that he thought was his best work over the years.

"Self Portrait" arrived yesterday from SonyMusicStore.com. I think they still have it in stock for $39.98. Great price - especially if it's OOP or nearly OOP. I listened to the first disk and was very impressed.

Thanks for that link. They do apparently record every show and take the best performance of each tune to release in a multiple-disk, limited edition set.

Ths album (w/Joe Farrell, Eddie Gomez and Steve Gadd) is nowhere NEAR as bad as it's cover.

On a side note ... Anyone have any information on this one? I downloaded it from eMusic today and AMG has incomplete lineup info and no review. Who's the guitar player? Where/when was it recorded?

I rented a Honda Civic Hybrid a couple of months ago for an out-of-town trip. I did well over 700 miles and it was a very comfortable ride and got around 40mpg. I would still buy a Prius over this, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Not me. I thought it was refreshingly unique. ... and I'm sure Billy is VERY use to his "singing" as this group has played together (off and on) for many years.

Big fan of the Shakill's albums. The first is a little stronger than "II", but both are certainly worth tracking down.

Yeah. "Self Portrait". That's the one. I just checked Amazon and they DO have it listed ... for $49.98. Good price. I'm sure I checked them before and it wasn't there, but maybe my mind is on vacation.

Just realized that "Portrait" is OOP. I remember hearing so many good things about it when it came out a few years back. I thought I found a copy (on sale, too!) on SonyMusic.com, but since the order has been "in progress" for a couple of weeks, I'm thinking they won't be able to ship.

MBB rocks! I've seen them a couple of times - Fez & Yoshi's. Two very different venues, but smokin' both times. I like the "Live in Time" album a lot. It's not Mingus, but ... he's not around anymore.

I got it "Saved for Later" on eMu, SS1.

SS1, you can catch them next year (with a slightly different lineup, though). Saw Randy Weston w/Billy Harper on Saturday. TOTALLY entertaining show. I can't believe it's the first time I've seen Weston. I also can't believe that he's 80+ years old! Doesn't look it at all (except that he moves kinda slow). The whole band was cooking and Billy was on fire (of course - what ELSE is new). Have to catch him again the next time he comes around.

Whoa. Totally cool, Ag. What a great experience. I would agree with your review of the performance and the players. I didn't find Douglas' performance or composition particularly inspiring, but he was definitely inspired himself, as you said. BTW, I didn't get to hang with any of them after the show ...
