GARussell Posted September 17, 2007 Report Posted September 17, 2007 Before: A 1989 PJ CD entitled Trio which features 12 Russ Freeman sides from 1953 and 8 Richard Twardzik sides from 1954. I believe that all tracks are included in the PJ Piano Trios Select. Now: Herbie Nichols, disc 2. Quote
paul secor Posted September 17, 2007 Report Posted September 17, 2007 Stan Getz with Jimmy Raney: 8/15/51 - w. Horace Silver, Leonard Gaskin, & Roy Haynes 12/12/52 - w. Duke Jordan, Bill Crow, & Frank Isola Quote
king ubu Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 yesterday: disc 2-4 of the Elvin Jones Mosaic (all three albums with Wilbur Little on bass plus the first with the new band w/Gene Perla and Dave Liebman) - fantastic! now: Harry James Capitol recordings (discs 5-7 of the Krupa/James box) - rather nice, didn't expect to like it that much... to be followed by disc 3 of the Woody Herman, I think... will see. king ubu Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Went with Roy Eldridge, not Woody Herman... into disc 2 by now Quote
Tom 1960 Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Disc 1 A really outstanding collection. As much as I admire Dizzy's fine work, Tubby Hayes is just outstanding on this first disc. An artist I need to explore in greater detail. Quote

Matthew Posted September 25, 2007 Report Posted September 25, 2007 The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Freddie Redd. Disk one. I'm still in shock over today. I go into Silver Platters in North Seattle, and I'm about ready to leave, I look down under the used jazz cd bin, and there's the Freddie Redd Mosaic for $29.99, so I jump on it. The set is in mint conditions too. Pure luck. Quote

I once found the Bechet and Herbie Nichols CD boxes in a store for £10-15 each with bent boxes but the books and CDs were fine. Currently spinning 'Curtis Amy Select' CD3. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 Got the Onzy Matthews Select yesterday. Really pleased to do so. Very nice stuff, a bit along the lines of Gerald Wislon, but more raw and brash - Clifford Scott makes a difference there, I think. MG Quote

king ubu Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Stan Kenton - Capitol 1943-47 - disc 2 by now - some fine June Christy here! (never managed to find the Holman/Russo box, but I guess i have most of that on individual Blue Note/Capitol CD reissues by now) Quote
jazzbo Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Mosaic Commodore volume 1. The Teddy Wilson record is a real gem. I like this collection more and more. No kidding. Fantastic music, almost everything on that label is fascinating to hear. Right now, Columbia Piano Jazz Moods. Quote

What a pity Mosaic didn't issue this fabulous collection on CD... Yeah, and the least they could have done is keep one of each of the LP sets for me, for the time I found out about Mosaic... or even better, a couple of more years, until I'd have had the knowledge and some money. king ubu Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Stan Kenton - Capitol 1943-47 - disc 2 by now - some fine June Christy here! (never managed to find the Holman/Russo box, but I guess i have most of that on individual Blue Note/Capitol CD reissues by now) into disc 4 by now - very enjoyable! I could do with a bit less Vido Musso and less of the boy singer, too - Christy on the other hand Quote
sidewinder Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 The Holman/Russo set absolutely smokes. Recommended without reservation. Just spinning Johnny Richards - Mosaic Select CD2'. Superb ! Quote

king ubu Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 The Holman/Russo set absolutely smokes. Recommended without reservation. Would you have the discography to post here? I never found out what exactly is on that set and would appreciate being able to compare with the single CDs I have (Potraits & Sketches on Standards, New Concepts of Artistry, Kenton Showcase are the ones falling into that period, I think, as well as one lone Russo arrangement on "Easy Go"). sidewinder Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 Sorry, king ubu - I don't have the discography in digital form. Maybe someone else on the board has it? Quote
