Larry Kart Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Tonight Wadada, Douglas Ewart and Mike Reed. How was that? Dream line up Friday night was mostly a damp squib for me. Leo played very well, but I could hear little or no effective group interaction. In fact, I almost fell asleep at times. Some (maybe most) of this response or lack of response may have had to do with me, but that's how it felt. Quote
BillF Posted March 2, 2014 Report Posted March 2, 2014 Not exactly "live music", but today I went to a saxophone masterclass by Dave O'Higgins on the subject of using the pentatonic scale. Referring to the clip below, his subtitle was "From J Lo to Giant Steps". Fascinating! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH9l8KlcuBA Quote
Justin V Posted March 3, 2014 Report Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) Last night it was Terence Blanchard's quintet with special guests Ravi Coltrane and Lionel Loueke. Tonight it was Donny McCaslin's group, with Jason Lindner, Tim Lefebvre and Nate Wood. i almost didn't go due to being exhausted, but I am ecstatic that I did. It was simply one of the best concerts I have ever attended. Wildly inventive, groove-based music from a tight, muscular band. I live for shows like this. Edited March 3, 2014 by Justin V Quote

BFrank Posted March 6, 2014 Report Posted March 6, 2014 Not exactly tonight, but I managed to get tix for Herbie Hancock at SFJazz in May. They added a 3pm show to the Sunday 5/18 booking - it sold out in about 15 minutes. Going to be a great chance to see him in a relatively small venue. Will also be a nice complement to seeing Wayne there later this month. Quote

Kevin Bresnahan Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Tonight at the Regattabar in Cambridge, MA - Four Generations of Miles Davis with Mike Stern, Sonny Fortune, Buster Williams and Jimmy Cobb. Nice ! It was awesome. Mike Stern & Sonny Fortune played some incredible solos. Buster's bass had an electric pick-up that ruined his sound. All twangy and whirring (from his fingers sliding on the strings, but other than that, well worth the trip. Quote

relyles Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Tonight's outing: Thursday, March 13, 2014 – 8pm - $12 general public / $7 students JOE LOVANO/MARK HELIAS/TOM GIAMPIETRO TRIO: A TRIBUTE TO ED BLACKWELL Bowker Auditorium – University of Massachusetts – Amherst, MA Very strong performance last night. During the approximately ninety minute set the trio focused on tunes by Lovano and Helias that both recorded with Blackwell on several recordings in the early nineties. The trio clicked well together and solos by Lovano and Helias were consistently engaging. I was not familiar with Giampietro - I believe he teaches at UMASS. His playing throughout was somewhat understated, but appropriate. When he had a chance to solo he displayed a somewhat Blackwellesque emphasis on form rather than simply bashing away. That was appreciated. I traveled to the show with Kunle Mwanga, who some may remember as David Murray's former manager who also produced a lot of concerts. Mwanga roomed with Blackwell during the last couple of years of his life and the too were close. I had not interacted with him much before, but it was very nice getting to know him a bit. He made the drive enjoyable. Overall, a good night out even though I am paying for it today at work after getting very little sleep last night. Well I know which live music I won't be seeing tonight (terribly sad I can't make it) Eric Revis' Quartet @ the Bimhuis (Amsterdam) with Bill McHenry, Chad Taylor and Darius Jones I read something somewhere recently about this ensemble. This is a group I would love to see and/or hear very soon. Quote
BeBop Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 Santa Cruz Jazz Festival Yes, high school bands. I was "there" once myself. Includes the famous Berekeley High School jazz band. Quote
7/4 Posted March 15, 2014 Report Posted March 15, 2014 I was fortunate to hear Ravi Coltrane and Luis Perdomo play duets at Hamilton Stage in Rahway, NJ last night. On stage interview with Gary Walker (WBGO) and an hour set recorded for NPR. We're so lucky to have world class jazz in our tiny town. I heard Charles Tolliver there in December and Steve Turre last month. Quote
