Tuesday night I caught the first set of Tom Harrell's "Trip" at the Vanguard with Mark Turner, Ugonna Okegwo and Adam Cruz. Nice set.

Tonight if all goes well I will be at the Jazz Gallery for trumpeter Jonathan Finalyson's Sicilian Defense.

Lee Konitz Quartet at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass. with Dan Tepfer (p), Jeremy Stratton (b), George Schuller (d).

Memorable evening. As best as I can tell, here's what was played:

What Is This Thing Called Love?

Stella By Starlight

My Heart Belongs to Daddy

Body and Soul

All the Things You Are

Just Friends

Alone Together (partial)

317 East 32nd Street

Skylark (duo with Tepfer)

Fighting a stubborn cold, and nasty wet -cold weather, took a run up to Philadelphia on Friday evening 4/4 to catch JOOKLO DUO, from Italy, for some finely frenzied free blowing and drumming, at Pageant Soloveev Gallery. Also caught on same bill Jack Wright group with Michael Evans on percussion (and I do mean percussion), and Joe Moffett on trumpet. Both sets very rewarding, enough to justify the I-95 runs.

Julie Fowlis in a funny crescent shaped room at the back of Sheffield City Hall. She looks like a contestant for the X-Factor but, four albums into her career (plus contributions to other band LPs and Transatlantic Sessions appearances), is sill performing straight Scots Gaelic folk music. One of the loveliest voices around today and a small but very powerful band (bouzouki, guitar, fiddle (Duncan Chisholm who is fast becoming a star in his own name) with very accomplished whistle (and the odd bit of harmonium) from the singer).

Good range from yearning ballads to jigs and reels, though the star turns come with the fast paced mouth music. Lovely evening.

There's a little bit of them on In Tune last Wednesday. Haven't listened yet so I'm not sure if they chat:

Not much chat (some inanity from Suzie Klein) but they do play rather wonderfully. It's where I discovered they were playing today

Just had a listen. Marvellous music. And the chat did clear up a few things about them - I could never work out what came first, the jazz or the baroque. Seems it was the jazz. And Homburger did explain how she was drawn into more contemporary music after getting to know Guy.

Saw our own Jeff Crompton and the 4th Ward Klezmer Orchestra recently at the Pensacola Jazz Fest. Outstanding band. Great energy. More than a couple of people around me said "I love this band," including the guy shooting photos for the event.

And I'll go ahead and plug the new CD as well, "Abdul the Rabbi," which I snagged at one of the tents selling merchandise. Had a beer and some grub with Jeff and a couple of the fellas in the band afterward. Unfortunately, they had to run and the weather turned sour, so I bugged out. But it was great hearing Jeff play. And he can play.

Here's a pic from their gig. That's Jeff in the lab coat cranking it on the old liquorice stick:

On the 4th, I saw McCoy Tyner with Gerald Cannon, Francisco Mela and special guest Terence Blanchard. McCoy still plays with incredible power and sensitivity, and Blanchard sounded inspired.

On the 1tth, I saw a short set by Christian McBride, Christian Sands and Carl Allen. I'd never heard Sands before, but he is a very impressive young pianist with a firm grasp of history and technique to spare. I'm looking forward to hearing the trio play a full-length set in the future.

On the 12th, I saw Horizon, with Bobby Watson, Terell Stafford, Edward Simon, Peter Washington and Victor Lewis. I've seen Watson and Washington before, but it was my first time seeing the other members of the band. This is a top-notch working band. I had front-row tickets for both sets and thankfully overcame car problems to attend. Lewis is criminally underrated. I think that it was the first time that I'd seen a drummer using two snares.

That's very welcome news that the Horizon band are back together. Just hope that they tour Europe (even better - the UK) ! I think the last time I saw that band it had Essiet Essiet on bass, in place of Washington. Totally agree that Victor Lewis is very under-rated. Any time that he appears on a bill is usually good enough for me, no matter who it is with.

Victor Lewis? Fabulous drummer! Heard him on a lot of discs and saw him once - with the Carla Bley Orchestra in the late 90s.

MARS WILLIAMS

Mars Williams - solo saxophone

A rare solo set by one of Chicago's best known reed masters.

MAZZARELLA/WILDEMAN/NIEKRASZ

Nick Mazzarella - alto saxophone, Albert Wildeman - bass, John Niekrasz - drums

This one-off grouping features a new generation of rising stars within the Chicago improvised music scene.

Mars was in good form; Mazzarella was outstanding. Hadn't heard him in about six months, said to him afterwards: "You go away for a while and find that someone's burned the house down." His level of intensity now reminds me of Akira Sakata's, and that is intense! New recordings from Nick may be coming soon.

Tony Malaby Paloma Xtra with:

Malaby on tenor saxophone

Ben Monder on guitar

Ben Gerstein on trombone

Eivind Opsvik on bass

Dan Weiss and Billy Mintz on drums

That should be cool. I'm back in DC, so no chance of going. Where's the venue? I just saw Gerstein and I like his way of playing.
